Misick has dirt on CI politics

| 31/07/2013

(CNS): The former premier of Turks and Caicos is said to have information on crimes involving senior politicians in the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Bermuda and TCI, as well as United States citizens and corporations. Michael Misick has been facing extradition from Brazil to face corruption charges at home since his arrest in that country last December. However, an editorial in the TCI Journal suggests that he may be facing charges and jail time in the US instead, claiming that Misick is in plea bargain negotiations with “the Americans” as well as the TCI’s Special Investigation and Prosecution Team (SIPT), which could "reduce his time in a United States prison to 20 years instead of life".

Michael Misick fled the TCI in 2009 after a commission of inquiry exposed widespread corruption in the islands, which led to the UK imposing direct rule over the territory. Misick is suspected of corruption, misusing public money and profiting from the sale of government land to developers and is alleged to have amassed a personal fortune of $180m. An international warrant was issued for his arrest and after three years on the run, he was apprehended on 7 December 2012 by Brazil's federal police in Rio de Janeiro as he was about to board a plane for Sao Paulo.

In January this year in a message from his maximum security jail cell in the South American country, Misick linked his situation to that of McKeeva Bush, the Cayman Islands’ former premier, claiming that his unlawful detention in Rio de Janeiro and the arrest of Bush in December 2012  were both illustrative of the UK’s determination to control its territories. He said the British were using allegations of corruption as a way of getting rid of leaders who strive for independence or who want to govern autonomously.

Since then, however, Misick lost his appeal for political asylum in Brazil and was returned to jail to await extradition.

An editorial in the TCI journal, headlined “Michael Misick in plea bargaining negotiations with the Americans and SIPT”, says, “If he has any hopes to not spend the rest of his life in prison, now is the moment he has the most leverage. Along with crimes that deal with United States citizens and corporations, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, Michael is said to have information on crimes dealing with United States citizens and senior politicians in Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.”

The editorial concludes: “If Michael Misick can reduce his time in a United States prison to 20 years instead of life, it will be a worthwhile agreement for him and may actually help the Turks and Caicos Islands recover some of the stolen millions.”

They, meaning the U.S. and U.K., don't mind supporting corrupt leaders throughout the world as long as they remain pliable and cooperative for their ventures. All the while ripping off their own countries. When they become too uncontrolable, or get full of themselves and their own powers….they move in to "save" the various countries denouncing them as tyrants. It has happened so often it's become part of their foreign policy. South Vietnam, Indonesia, Cuba, The Shah, Pinochet, Saddam Hussein, Noriega and his CIA cocaine connections. And now Missick, another who became out of control and who is threatening to "blow the whistle". My advice to him would be to not fly anywhere. Because planes do fall out of the sky.

10.14…last paper you read must have been around 20 years ago…they (the west) learned their lessons. And then when they do something (Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Tunisia etc) what happens? Those people become even more of a mess than they were during the dictatorships…not surprising in some cases, no experience of democracy is hard to get over…but what is the best way to go? I have no idea..And here in Cayman…Mac was not popular was he? He did nothing wrong did he? How did the UK support him?The previous PPM admin took flak for bad spending too  and FCO getting tougher…did you not notice? Good ganja crop this year?

    • Anonymous says:

Because the UK was foolish enough to think that her territories were mature enough to govern themselves without resorting to banana republic corruption. Obviously that was a huge mistake as both the TCI and Cayman have proven to the world.

As Cayman doesn't have any global interests and isn't reliant on a fragile export market, it would do well not to judge those who must make difficult decisions to safeguard national security and international trade.

I wonder how isolationist idiots like you would treat an invasion by a foriegn force, who would you scream for. After all, why should British or US troops defend an island that actually produces nothing and whose entire financial sector could electronically relocate within hours?

PS. Vietnam was actually a French colony, (French Indochina) and a French war after it was returned to French control by the British in 1945. This was prior to the eventual involvement of further UK, US, Anzac, Chinese and Soviet forces in what we now know as the Vietnam war. It was a war of independence that evolved into a capitalist v communist conflict, not an anti corruption battle as wrongly inferred.

So the citizens of these countries are stuck between the UK/US and theier agenda and the corrupt polictical leaders.

Sounds like the UK told him he was not allowed to take a piece of their cake.

      Sounds familiar.

You guys will be surprised to know that it is not who you think it is but rather a very nice quiet person. Always quick to jump to conclusions. If you really followed the news like you should, you would realize that there is only one politician that was a Director of a Cayman company that had a contract  to do business with the TCI government. Nothing wrong with anyone making a "healthy" living.

    • Anonymous says:

I think you will find that the politician you have in mind was not in fact a director of the company that had a contract to do business with the TCI govt., but a small minority shareholder in the parent company to that company. The people who are indeed directly involved are very close to the politician who you say is not the politician involved.

True Talk. Truth! And another ting.

I think you'll find the nice quiet person you refer to was an unsuspecting investor in a company he (perhaps mistakenly) believed to be a legitimate one doing legitimate business with the TCI government. Did he not declare his interests in that company? With 20/20 hindsight we now know that there SEEMS to have been something dodgy about the Caymanian who put the whole thing together although he has not been successfully prosecuted anywhere and in fact won a civil case recently in Jamaica.

The USA should be happy about the deal if he sings like a canary. He might even get political asylum there and end up not spending a day in prison because the USA is not interested in his or any other country political corruption they just want their tax dollars and if he has information in this respect that is what they want and this Is why I believe he is in a plea agreement with the USA.  These are interesting times indeed.  Interesting enough I watched an episode of American Justice last night (30/7/13) on the Christopher "Dudas" Coke and I just had to wonder what if …. Now today Misick is about to spill the beans and many believe that this will have so serious recuperations here in Cayman I hope not.

    My dearest Mikey,

Did you not learn anything from the mother country?

Ma boy … as Premier you should have blatantly lied to the masses, made up bogus claims of WMD's, evicted internationally commissioned weapons inspectors, illegally invaded a sovereign country (on the basis of said lies), KILLED a few hundred thousand innocent men, women and children (after all – who cares … they were not White or Christian). Most importantly, done all in the name of political corruption fueled not only by the greed of money but by power and (Western) diplomatic "respect" as well.

Had you done so you would have now been sitting pretty on the board of an oil company (with operations based in the country you illegally invaded, no less!) or going on world tours, selling books, staying at the Ritz Carlton Cayman and knocking about tennis balls with the legends. You know, like a certain former Prime Minister of the country that so many are on here regard as the "north star" of anti-corruption and transparency.

But noooo … you wanna be corrupt and opaque! How dare you, Mike?!

Now Mikey, we will be trolled and thumbs-downed till thy kingdom come for this post – but don't worry about that. You see, certain simple truths and facts will be washed away by accusations of being "anti-UK" or "two wrongs don't make a right". Humph – they'll put me firmly in my rightful place – watch.

Anyway, I cannot be certain if it is due to the difference in color of skin or country of birth of the perpetrators that results in the vastly different judgements in the court of public opinion as it regards these issues – but all I know it is all very, very puzzling.

Whodumbis, you are without doubt the vilest of contributors to this blog site. If you think you have the monopoly on Blair bashing, think again. Most British people are furious at what he and George W did in our name, after all it wasn't Cayman's sons and daughters they sent to war and who returned home in body bags, horribly mutilated or mentally scarred.

For your information those UK and US heroes weren't picked to carry out their leaders orders because of the colour of their skin or their religion. A modern military isn't the projection of white power or a christian crusade, it is made up of all religions, colours and creeds and to accuse them of conducting a racist or religious war on a politicians behalf is a criminal insult that I doubt you would say in person. Because like the coward you are you use anonymous blogs to vent your sick fury at a country that actually tries to do good in the world instead of being world renowned and reviled for facilitating tax evasion/avoidence and money laundering.

How much money and how many resourses do the Cayman Islands Government send to developing countries and who do you send when famine and disaster strike the poor and disadvantaged. Where are your United Nations peace keepers and your christian principles when others, (who are invariably non white) need urgent assistance to rid themselves of brutal and corrupt regimes?

I'll tell you where you are, hiding behind this privileged little rock pontifcating to those who actually do something and using the blunt stick of religion and race to make a poisonous, political point. We can all throw stones and we all make mistakes, but it is how we confront our sins that we grow as a nation.

The T&C debacle isn't about colour or religion, it was about a corrupt government and its equally corrupt leader taking money from the people of his country without their consent, (ring any bells?). Only a blinkered fool with a racist agenda would try and make this about colour, a fool who's inadequacies he deflects onto others so that he can hide behind a curtain ofdelusion and self rightious persecution. Your lack of confidence in the colour of your skin is sad and you do a great disservice to those of all races when you cannot find a more reasoned argument to justify your own fragility. Remember, racism and religious hatred isn't the preserve of white people. Or do you stand side by side with Mugabe, Saddam, Assad, Ahmadinajad, Amin or Bin Laden (the list goes on…), men of colour who have murdered more of their own people than any white, christian colonial power in history. And how do you equate Obama utilising more drone strikes than Bush against non white aggressors?

So Whodumbis, if you want to align yourself with narcissistic, egotistical, murdering thieves who wear sharp suits to cover up their failings, then I think that say's more about you and your nausiating views than you had probably intended.

A smart mouth isn't the same as a smart mind, you'd do well to remember that when you next launch a racial slur against brave men and women who fight in our name.

Re: "If you think you have the monopoly on Blair bashing, think again. Most British people are furious at what he and George W did in our name … "

Ummm, obviously either not the majority or not sincerely.

Where is Tony Blair today? Is Britain not a democracy? According to you the UK is right next door to heaven as it relates to goodwill, morality and such – so why is your boy (Blair) chilling, racking up oil millions and buying luxury homes all over the UK at this very moment?

Unfortunately the fallacy of your opening paragraph basically renders the rest of your post worthless.

Talk is cheap buddy – and you have done a LOT of it on the behalf of your country.

Put up, or shut up. The hypocrisy must stop. End of.

        * Lastly, the hate you hold for me is very concerning … seriously – you might want to bring that up at your next session.

        😉

        • Anonymous says:

Well that reply really wasn't worth the effort was it Whodatis, I'd say you got your self rightious ass kicked good and proper?

Tony Blair became the most unpopular Prime Minister since Thatcher and it was noticable that his unpopularity came from all political corners. Brown took the premiership because they knew they couldn't win another election with Blair in charge. So get it right, he was made to pay for his political decisions, not enough by most peoples accounts but that's politics, justice never seems to be done.

And obviously the majority did think that way because his government was thrown out of office by the coalition when the truth was finally revealed.

Nobody really cares about Tony Blair except those who can't think of anybody else to think about. He is a non entity in the UK and most people hope he stays that way, but he also entitled to earn his living how he pleases in a free and democratic society. The UK is far from being close to heaven, but at least it actually does something to better the world and help those in need. I'd rather try to help and fail than never to have tried at all.

So to conclude. Whodatis you really need to learn more about the world and what happens beyond your computer screen, your self taught vision of world history and current affairs is staggeringly ignorant. I have put up, you've just replied like a petulant teeager who's been caught out behind the cycle shed. For once, why don't you try and offer an argument based on fact instead of your delusions of colonial persecution, try for once offering solutions instead of criticism.

And for heavens sake grow up!!

Ok, I wonder what the parents and families of the thousands of innocent children murdered by Blair's ILLEGAL INVASION of a foreign country would make of your logic.

Honestly, having debates with individuals like yourself is like arguing with a brick wall. You are so tied to your own perspective and that of your country that you fail to see the absurdity of your argument. I cannot even get angry or truly engaged with you because I realize what I am up against.

Let me guess, I bet you believe that Blair actually gives two craps about the way his political career ended, don't you?

He does not, poster. He has been financially rewarded handsomely for his dirty work on the behalf of the true profiteers of his illegal wars.

THAT is the way the world really works today and your beloved UK is dead smack in the middle of the most vile category of global corruption that this world has ever seen.

My goodness, the UK has done a fine job on institutionalizing and droning its citizens. Honestly, you would serve your country better by staying off this forum – the exposure is all very telling.

      Hello again err'body.

You know, I have just realized an interesting trend within the various replies to my initial post.

Suddenly, because of highlighting the simple reality of the situation, I am (simultaneously) being aligned with Al-Qaida, Osama Bin Laden, Al-Waadi'i, and other extremists. Yes, I am being tarnished as "anti-Western" by the CNS troll-posse.

Normally I would laugh away such deeds (actually, I still am) however, there is a very concerning undertone to all of this.

I trust we are all recognizing the way in which many of us have been desensitized to the reality of the world today. Clearly we are willing to discard an individual to enemy / traitor status simply because we disagree with not his opinions – but for stating actual facts.

Wow … your "western" governments and media really has done a number on you all, haven't they? Very sad.

Mob-mentality can be a very dangerous thing folks – just ask the Germans and Rwandans.

Conclusion: Call out Tony Blair for his deeds and be prepared to be labelled a terrorist.

The reality of your perspective Whodatis is that I see little difference in you and your very detractors you mention.

I happened upon your posts on the Cayman Islands Sex Offender Registry Facebook page (before all comments were deleted), and saw how you were willing to share tidbits of your life story yet were willing to "look the other way" to what the people had done- despite they had broken the law. I liken that stance to exactly how you claim others on this forum to turning a "blind eye" to their fearless leaders of their western nations.

Further, to do this day, you have never come out to explain how Cayman is going to right the wrongs of its past which occured to its residents and citizens over the years. I look forward to an invitation to the truth and reconciliation commission that will be hosted to repair the harm and damage done to the slaves of previous generations.

And how about the old pirate ways of helping ships that have been "shipwrecked" in false channels and then "helping" the captains by rescuing the cargo. Any reconciliation plannedfor those actions of the past?

Or more recently, the act of having "expats" thrown off the island when a relationship goes sour, or a business partnership fails.

Every country (or BOT) has their history with it is its dark side or out of esteem traits. I look forward to hearing your plans for reconciliation on the above as you lead the charge towards independence in Cayman.

Hahaha poor guy probably thinks this is newsworthy. Lift up any rock in Cayman and there's evidence of dodgy dealings by MLAs and senior government officials. The difficulty is getting anyone to do anything about it.

Duty waivers, nation building fund, overseas trips of highly quesitonable merit, the paving of Cayman Brac, the goings on with the board of CAL, Joey Ebanks' behaviour at the turtle farm and the way he paid back what he took there, his subsequent appointment to the ERA, CINICO abuses as highlighted by the AG, the flagrant abuse of gas boy cards, the steadfast refusal by government ministries (including finance) to submitdetailed financial records, the many times the AG has reported publicly on the total lack of accountability and transparency in various government departments, the recent goings on at the NRA and the housing trust, the refusal by the MLAs to properly implement a public register of their interests, the appointment of "park rangers" at Barkers beach, the cohen and cohen deal, the cruise port deal, the dump deal, the dynamite incident, the stan thomas affair, Rolston Anglin's car crash and the mystery passenger, McKeeva's "honrary" PHD and the suspicious donation that apparently went with it, the duty that was never collected from the Ritz during the previous administration and the perks some officials may have received in exchage.  That's just what I can think of off the cuff.

oh please Misick…same as Bush, accuse the UK of everything rather than have to defend yourself and prove (if possible) that you are not guilty. All in BOT's should understand, UK no longer wishes to have those territories as reminders of its bad old colonial past, it wants to get away from that as far as possible. However, if the populations decide they wish to remain in the UK, the UK will agree in support of democracy…however there is a price…Transparency and Good Governance. Why should the UK be besmirched with your politicians corruptions (TCI, here etc) when it has enough of its own problems. Don't want it? Then take a vote and get out..

    • Caymanian laughing says:

If Mesick and McKeeva are the way forward with Independence, then NO THANK YOU!

The UK may want to be rid of their last 625,000 BOT citizens, bur I will happily remain under British rule, know there is a British Army to defend me (remember Falkland Islands?) and send my children to British University with their unique and much sought-after BOTC passports!  I am a BOTC and the rights that come with that are many!

The ONLY people who want independence are the Politicians!  Only so they can line their pockets and enjoty personal power and corruption. No thank you and you cannot fool me.

Thank God for the Internet, Facebook, Social Media, and 2013 technology.  Sorry Mr. Politiician: I do NOT need YOU to protect me from human rights violations like 50 years ago and seek my freedom, I have it  all out in the public eye if needed these days, thank you.  I do NOT need any more politicians lying to us and saying Independence is the only way to go.  Gee, how well did that work out for the rest of the Caribbean?

Hey "Caymanian laughing", you "Hit the nail on the head"! Well done, my friend. My sentiments, exactly.

      • Whodatis says:

Wow. You have a very high opinion of the UK.

Tell me, have you spoken with a mainland Brit recently?

Furthermore, you demonstrate such a disgraceful lack of confidence in your own people that you are beyond pathetic. Worst of all, you fail to realize how your words play right into the hands of those that wish to keep you brainwashed.

I trust you realize that many of the same people that "support" your perspective would not spit on your burning country (and people) if not guaranteed some kind of benefit for themselves.

They say ignorance is bliss, but in addition to that you are stuck in the past and an embarassment.

        • Anonymous says:

Can you please expand on exactly what you mean when you say 'if not guaranteed some kind of benefit for themselves'.

As far as I'm aware Cayman doesn't have anything to offer the UK. Tax evasion and cartel money laundering are high on every G8 governments agenda at the moment and Cayman, along with the the BVI are high on the list of country's that have facilitated this process for far too long. I dare say that money from the TCI is hidden away on this rock, along with Mexican drug money and the proceeds of theft from around the world.

The UK has no interest in the Cayman Islands as a tangible asset and if the Caymanian people want independence then we won't stand in your way, no more than we are with the Scots or did with Jamaica, (a country of hard working people and plentiful exports). The point is can you afford it, where will you get diplomatic, security and financial protection from when you don't have an experienced diplomatic corp, a military service or sufficient credit rating to borrow much needed finance. Exactly who will pay for all of the above, as a non productive country you already find it difficult to meet your bills?

You could of course raise more revenue through charging more immigration and business fees, but then you would lose the only real engine of your fragile economy, the foriegn business community and the expat workforce.

So please enlighten us instead of abusing us, in the meantime the UK taxpayer will keep footing thebill.

sounds good, I would not want someone spitting on me even if I was on fire, a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher are far more effective on fire than spittal in my experience.

But hey if you want indepenence and then swap out the hoses of the Cayman fire fighters forg their saliva, go for it.

You are a strange boy and not a particularly very nice one

    • Dreadlock Holmes says:

"Transparency and Good Governance".  Really?  I'm not condoning Missick or his behavior but to imply the U.K. has set some sort of standard for either requires a certain amount of disbelief however we fall for it. and the spin. Up on the high horse they get while ignoring altogether the many instances of corruption and duplicity evident in the workings of the U.K. political system and it's foreign policy however the best defence is an offence. And then there follow the comments saying "move to a communist country if you don't like it."  Propaganda is propaganda my friends whether it be from east or west we're all being duped.

    • Anonymous says:

Yes please spill the Beans Michael Misick.  You will all soon be suprised at who it really is. Mac's Government was not in Powery 2005 – 2009 during Misick's rule.  Misick fled the TCI in 2009 after a commission of enquiry exposed widespread corruption in the Islands.  Mac's Government came back in Power May 2009.  Wait for it………………..before condemning Mac……you are in for a rude awakening!!!!

      • Anonymous says:

Is not so much a question of who was in power in Cayman during Misick's tenure as premier but rather who was friends with whom.  You are the one in for the shock.

Ask yourself which Caymanian politician most reminds you of Misick, and who his friends and close associates are.

  20. Young_Caymanian87 says:

  22. Anonymous says:

Interesting what happens when people are facing their just deserts!

Lets hope he spills it all, then, if as one might suspect, politicians from one jurisdiction hide their ill gotten gains in another, then this could be the beginning of some interesting revelations. As we learn more about, for example, the failure to observe proper process in the making of large contracts, reasonable people wonder why politicians consistently behave like that when to do the right thing would avoid suspicions developing in the first place. Then we wait patiently while investigations are made, assuming that skulduggery will emerge. It rarely does though, and maybe thats because there was none, we were just over suspicious.

There is another possibility and that is that the ill gotten gains are hidden in some other secretive haven, maybe a bit like our own! Evidence is then hard to find, but if someone like Misick knows something and is threatened, hey presto, the whole rotten barrel might burst! Well, lets hope that we were all over suspicious because if not, there might be some uncomfortable sleepless nights ahead for some!
