Convicts on run for 5 days

| 19/08/2013

(CNS): Five days after they escaped from HMP Northward, there is stil no sign of Steve and Marcus Manderson and Chadwick Dale. Police confirmed Sunday night that, despite the joint efforts of prison officers and RCIPS personnel, the three Northward inmates who broke out of the country’s jail on Wednesday, 14 August, remain on the run. Law enforcement officials said they had conducted a number of searches in all three major districts over the weekend with negative results. Searches were based on intelligence gathered and reported sightings, officials said. With all three men at large and likely being helped by someone, officials reminded the public that it is an offence to house, assist or by any other means aidpeople who have escaped lawful custody.

Police are continuing to ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or attempted break-ins, disturbances on their property or petty theft, as this may be a sign that one or more of the inmates has been through the area.

Police also confirmed that the inmates were not involved in the arrest on Friday night following a car smash in the Savannah area.

The three men broke free from the country’s jail on Wednesday evening sometime before 9:30pm via the kitchen block, having cut through the two parameter fences. Prison officials confirmed shortly afterwards that another inmate was seen on the CCTV footage at HMP Northward helping the three men escape from custody.

Speaking about the escape last week, the new prison director, Neil Lavis, said that during 30 years in the prison system in the UK he had never had a prisoner escape, and he was disappointed that after just six weeks here three men were on the run. He told Cayman27 News that he and the prison staff had failed the public.

“It is absolutely devastating, and our first priority is to protect the public and we have failed in that. I need to take that on the chin and move forward,” Lavis said, as he committed to the inmates' recapture and a review of the prison security

Lavis also revealed that although Steven Manderson was in prison for life as a convicted killer, because he had not escaped for nine years and had worked through the system he had been listed as a category C prisoner. He said the prison had no intelligence that he was planning to make his sixth bid for freedom.

Chief Superintendent Kurt Walton said that there were two components to the RCIPS and the prison’s joint investigation: one team dedicated to the enquiry and another team doing the search.

“We understand that there is a great deal of public anxiety at the moment in relation to this escape. What we want to do is reassure the people that we are doing everything possible to capture and bring these people back into custody. We are working closely with prison officials and other law enforcement agencies,” Walton stated.

The investigating team is appealing to the public to continue to provide any information that may assist in the capture of the inmates by contacting 949-4222.

12:45, it does add up, read aboutSteve's previous 5 escapes.

He ususally "hides out" with help of his family and then turns himself in when he has had enough spoils from the free world, which is why no one ever gets busted for helping him, because he never gets busted!

Hey the Prison Director shouldn't kick him self so hard, look at Fairbanks, the Cubans just kept on escaping with the security there…I even believe they hadn't even caught some of them…..hope it wasn't the same security lol lol

Furthermore what about the CCTV cameras "supposively" all over the Island???? Wouldn't at least one of them pick something up.  Why do we keep wasting monies on private firms that can't provide the proper services.  Millions of dollars again put to waste, useless….why do we even have them if they don't operate?

You can't run for 5 days in Cayman.  The island is too small.  After about 2 hours at most in any direction you would end up in the sea.  That is why the marathon is a big loop.

They are not running, they're sitting it out!  Perhaps in the bush, a home, or a boat.

They need to check the Cayman Motor Museum, the two dolphin places, the unopened new road, the former butterfly farm etc, downtown GT after 7pm.   You know, places that nobody goes to.

Five days we have had a murderer and a known violent offender out there in the dark and we are not allowed a can of pepperspray let alone a tazer or a gun.

If the prison and the police contiue to fail us we may have to rethink how we are to protect ourselfs and our familys

10:18 If he was a real murderer dont you think that after escaping for 6 times that he would not have killed more people and took to the sea? We all should help the poor guy by raising funds for a re trial. We hope that our new Governor will look into this matter. The reason being Mr Manderson is always so hard to catch is because the Cayman Public turn their eyes on him as they are sorry for him as the Community do not believe that he did the murder. They haveeven put a name to the murderer. Please get me straight I am no relative of Mr Manderson, in fact have never even spoken to him in my life but I cover alot of the Public and they are in great sympathy for him. Life can be a long time to pay for something that you might not be guilty of.

true police only searched 3 districts?

What happened to their "so called" K9 Unit that they HAD TO BRING IN BANNED DOGS….not much use are they??? Just like the last K9 Unit, another waste of monies….if the dogs were properly trained in tracking there could have been a chance.   Remember when they had to bring in Metro Dade to assist many many years ago when "certain" prisoners escaped with their K9 Unit, at least they caught them "Philip Ebanks".  Thats a K9 Unit what we have is a joke!!!

  10. Anonymous says:

Given that it is illegal to assist fugitives, just wondering, how many persons are in prison for assisting Manderson last time? None? ok, yeah, whatever…

Just as the women who were caught a year or so back smuggling stuff into their boyfriends in their privates and elsewhere were never prosecuted. One was the grand daughter of a major deceased Caymanian-she has gone nuts for gangstas (two babies for two of them) and the police don't want to embarrass her and her family. It's Cayman, remember.
