Child shot in shop robbery

| 29/09/2013

(CNS) Updated: The police have now confirmed that, contrary to earlier reports, the victim injured during a grocery store robbery in West Bay on Saturday night was a 6-year-old boy.  The robbery at Videtts's Grocery store on Reverend Blackman Road, just a few feet away from the West Bay police station, happened at around 9:20 in the evening (28 September), when two masked men entered the store armed with a machete and a handgun. They demanded cash from the proprietor but the robber armed with the gun discharged a shot. Police said fragments from that shot caused non-life threatening injuries to the child, who was in the store with his parents and who was taken to the George Town Hospital by private car.

The child has since been released from the hospital having been treated for bruises.

"The six-year-old boy who was injured during the incident was released from hospital on Saturday night following treatment to superficial bruising," An RCIPS spokesperson stated, Monday. "It is believed that his injuries were caused when the fragments, or other material, ricocheted after a shot was discharged into the wall."

Police said the two robbers were believed to have fled the scene on foot in possession of a quantity of cash and were last seen running to the rear of the premises. The first suspect was described by the RCIPS as being 6'1" with a dark complexion, slim built, wearing a black jacket with a hood. The second was 5'6" also with a dark complexion, medium built and wearing a black jacket with a hood.

Detectives investigating the robbery are appealing for anyone who may have seen two men loitering outside the premises approximately two hours before the robbery to come forward. This or any other Information can be passed to the West Bay Police Station on 949-3999, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).

Only armed police are allowed to patrol the  Daisy Lane area of West Bay!! It's very sad that we have no go areas for our regular police officers, these thugs are making a mockery of our great police service. Please break up the gangs that hang around Batanaboo Plaza all day and night looking for trouble!

CNS seems to have  penchant of sensationalsing the news to make it seem even worse than it is, and it is bad. Take this headline. The child was not "shot" in the robbery. He was injured by stray shrapnel. That gives quite a different picture, don't you think?

Well McKeeva this is all caused by YOUR status Grants. We warned you about it, but you just won't listen. This is a product of those status grants and you have not seen anything yet. There is a new breed coming up, as right now they are rampaging throughout the district unsupervised by their parents and they are already stealing. The Police is quite aware of who they are and its going to get worse.  They want what you have and they are going to take it. They are not interested in education, they are interested in gangs, stealing, drugs and more.  McKeeva while you and Bernie Bush is pointing fingers at Alden McLaughlin and the PPM, you all better start doing something especially in your own district of West Bay. BTW Where are those other Political figures, Roldton Anglin. Cline Glidden, Richard Parchment and more, where are you now and what are you doing? Your district needs you, the young rebels of West Bay needs you, show your faces get active and nip this in the bud. For once do something positive in your district.  McKeeva you are the grandfather figure, this is your time to do something for your people instead of handing out Government money for free to them. This is your time now to take a stance and do something positive.  You need to stop hiding out with those rich people and start hanging out with the poor people of West Bay.

Unfortunately the way in which the CoP has decided to deal with crime and policing in general will never equate to a sustainable reduction in crime.  The fact that only ~5% of the police are on patrol is a glairing fact that the way in which we are policed is massively misfocused.  Reactive policing simply doesn't work.

Please West Bay is ran by the drug dealers, criminals, and anything else that falls into that category.  Everyone can say oh no not happening here, but the very big drug dealers are having young children now selling for them while the big drug dealers stand on the street corner so he has an alibi.  The police??? HA HA HA What a joke, if the common citizen sees this, how hard would it be for the police??? The police hide up in their officers, no patrols, no pressences, the commissioner is the biggest joker of all.  The crime in the Cayman Islands is at its all time HIGH!!!!

  5. Anonymous says:

WAKE UP AND PLEASE report to the police as someone KNOW who it is, some family, friends, brother, sister. If people help police more then less robberies.

  6. Anonymous says:

Why does everyone act shocked and start blaming someone else?  the communities need to start doing something about crime.    the police can do thier part and patrol but everybody in the districts need to start doing something also.

Banks first, then the opportunists crime, then burglaries, then purse and jewelley snatches, then bullying in schools, then molestations of children, then rape, then robbery of tourists,  then missing people, then gang shootings, then home invasions, then robbery of business people, then robbery and shots fired at a woman returning home, then shooting of a 6 year old boy.

who's next before this gets under some control?

    • Anonymous says:

Probably a little out of order. I'm guessing child molestingand bullying came long before the others in your list.

Any Caymanian under  age of thirty that commits a serious crime and is convicted should have their name and the names of both of there parents published in the newspaper,

  9. GA on your mind says:

I cannot believe the state of this Country that it is in now that I once used to call my home. I used to be so proud of my Country and I was always obliged to tell anyone how beautiful and lovely it is down there, a place of peace and transquility, I used to tell them that it is an exhilerating, experience of a lifetime now I am more ashamed.  I have been away for almost twenty years now and just when I was planning to come back home, I change my mind completely. Thank God the old people are all gone because, if they had ever lived to see the way that this once little peaceful sland has become this would had surely given them all a heart attack.

Something serious has to be done so that we can take back our country starting with our young people, stricter laws has to be reinforced and adequate changes has to be made now.  The goverment need to start arming the police with guns (not the young ones) and get them out there walking and patrolling these streets by doing something consecutive with their time. They need to have these cops out there by looking out for people of interest and anykinds of suspicious activities going on. Have a curfew time for anyone that is under eighteen strictly enforced these laws and the time for a change is now. Immigration needs to get more stricter with expatraitsand they need to start off by finger-printing them all by running a thorough background check on each and every single one of them, for I also feel it is not only our Caymanian young men doing these criminal acts it is also the ones that we are granting permit to and letting into our Country. The goverment needs to get more stricter on alcohol licenses and sanction or revoked anyone that sells underage minors alcohol  without a proper idenification.

They say a man can't eat if he don't work,, how that saying is so true, and as I have heard through the grapevine that a lot of ouryoung Caymanian men are out of work and that's reasons why they are robbing and polluting the sytem. As I come to understand, it is not because they don't want to work, it is mainly because they cannot get no jobs at all, particulary for the fact that the Goverment is giving all the expatraits these jobs instead. Seriously, then what do we as a people expect any better from our young people?  A man has got to eat and take care of his own, it is all about survival in this world and if our goverment is not doing anything about it, I dont know what else to say here. To the Cayman Islands Goverment I must say please start putting your people back to work, help these young people, they are our future and the time to act is now.

Northward hotel needs to stop feeding these criminals good proper meals three times a day and start giving them lighter snacks. The prison officer need to stop being their friend and start treating them like the criminal that they are so that they wont want to go back to jail ever again. I was shock to find out that prisoners were allowed to used cell phones in jail down there, are you kidding me?  If that is the case when I come down there to visit, I might as well "Book my Reservations at Northward Hotel" after all, it is free and you get all kinds of free accomodations what a great deal. My point that I am making here is that this is one of the reasons why these criminals keep doing what they do even when they been in jail before because, they get special treatment at this hotel that they  just love to keep on going back to visit this extended stay hotel.

My people now that you all have a new goverment that you have recently voted for to represent your Country, and since you the people have spoken and your voices were heard, now put them to work for you by getting them to enforced these laws that is rightfully needed indefinetley. Change is not just saying it, change is also doing it.  Caymanians take back your Country and march for a cause to be heard.  It is true that the government cannot controll everything that is happening in the country, they are not God, but at least they can take a stand in making adequate changes within the system that needs to be further look into with these criminals.  They need to make sure that once these criminals get out of jail  and they go back into society that they do a normal rountine check on them all now and again.

"Vidette's Pink Shop" in West Bay is about 450 – 500 feet from the West Bay Police Station. I personally know and I think many persons are also aware that the West Bay Vehicle Licencing Department (Across from the same pink shop and next to the West Bay Poilce Station) was also broken into about 3 – 4 years ago and a "Heavy Security Safe" was stolen from inside. The police tried to keep this incident under wraps because it was very, very embarrasing. This was definitely not a one man job and required a vehicle to be used to transport the heavy safe from around the back of the premises, which can clearly be seen from the reception area of the West Bay Police Station.

It's a sad state of affairs when these two incidents can happen under the nose of the police and they don't see, hear or know what the hell's going on.

How can citizens of this country be re-assured in the RCIPS motto, "Working with you and working for you"  RCIP —– Respect, Courtesy, Integrity and Professionalism ??? I certainly don't think !!!

Commissioner Baines, you have really lost the confidence of the Caymanian public and it's time for you and your blokes to catch a one way flight on British Airways back to the UK. It's no more sea, sand, sun and fun for you all and using up the tax payers money pussy-footing around and giving lip-service. Bring in Mr. Renato Adams retired Senior Supt Police JCF to run the RCIPS for 24 months – to rid this country of the menacing problems that has taken hold of the Cayman Islands.

A beautiful and productive member of our society is gone today because we dare to import worst criminals and give them permits to prey on our people. Guess what there are Caymanian criminals that I would give a job to over your kind any day because I know what to expect from them. It is people with attitudes like you that create gated communities and homes and businesses with steel bars. Caymanians have always been a forgiving and compassionate society that is why we have not burned, rioted, picketed and created civil disobedience as in other jurisdictions that is not our MO.  Please don't encourage it either, we will not stoop to that level but I would caution you and your kind that think alike don't push us against the wall and believe we will stay there or take our kindness for weakness.

    • The Ex-Expat says:

What job do you think the gunman would do if given the chance?  He's not even qualified to act as a firearms instructor at the shooting range.  Riding the garbage truck would interfere with his drug habit and drinking preferences, and I expect he's not got the right papers to work in accounting or law (the experinces of prior arrests and releases aside).  Child care or domestic help maybe?  Seriously though, the problem is really that he's immoral, lazy and stupid, and wants to live by the gun rather than work an honest day, and expats on work permits have nothing to do with any of that.

      • Anonymously says:

Please don't get me started as to what job can the gun man do, just ask anyone of those in Northward, Caymanian or Expat what they can do and let them demonstrate what they are able to do.  Government  could cut their expenditure in half if they would utilize prison labour.  Don't believe Cayman prisons are full of illerate and disposable Caymanians.  Enough said, give the potential gunman a job and he might not have to resort to gun crimes.

As heard on the radio last week by Bishop Nicholas Sykes, "hoods" are not needed in our tropical weather and are only used for committing crimes, period.

If  YOU know of someone that OWNS a hoodie, it is a 99%  chance that is not for covering up during a snowstorm, but to be used in a crime.

If YOU know of a hoodie gangster, turn them in NOW and let's clean up our streets.

Hear me you baby mammas and wannabe gangsters, move away- we do not want you in our community.

Wives, girlfriends, and the corner store owners….turn these thugs in please.

    • Concern Young Caymanian says:

I'm sorry but Mr. Sykes and yourself need to retract that statemenet. I have jackets with hoods, a nice thin white one, a gray with writing and even a purple one with flowers. To say someone with a hoodie is 99% chance of being a criminal is very Bias. Whilst I understand where his comment comes from, as its a criminal choice of clothing – do not generalize it due to the ill intentof a thief. A hoodie is used by many, during excerise/jogging, during the cold season with our nice Christmas breeze and when it rains. I'm sorry but I will not look at myself, my husband nor my babaies all of who have one or two jackets with hoods as criminals.

      • Okay explain THIS?? says:

Okay, so the black hoods are not worn by criminals?  I'm just saying, you look like a ganster and you will be treated like one. Why risk it?  9Im sure your white with flowers hood is nice, but what is the reason for dark hoods in HOT August?  Um, none, but trouble my dear.)

If you have children (like I do) then teach them that they will be judged on how they dress and act.

Dont allow your children to drive in souped up Hondas at speeds over 50MPH, go with friends that have dark tinted windows in their cars, wear ganster colours and bling, and for the love of life, please teach them that they can be a success if they get an education.

We have a lot of excellent role models here…. use them!

This is the new change 12:27 accept it or not but it is here as old cayman dies welcome to new cayman that many created but do not want now.  Sorry but too late change has come for one and all, young and old. So go right ahead and give the jobs to the "new" Caymanians because the new breed of Caymanians don't care one way or another it seems they are prepared to get their entitlements with or without a job.  Those that are in positions to help the new breed of Caymanians with a job should because at the end of the day you just might prevent a crime and better yet save a life and perserve the integrity of Cayman as a safe destination.

You read arrest made, held for questioning, released on bail.  What a joke.  It goes to show that the RCIPS are so useless, that an incedent happens a feet away from their door and they didn't have the balls to make an effort to pursue the criminals.  Useless qumbies.

If they heard of drugs somewhere they would've been there before the call was made.

Shameful. Where are the west bay representatives on this issue? It’s their community that is most affected by this problem? I bet when THEY get robbed, which is soon to come, then we’ll see them speak out! One thing I can say about ole Mac, back in is first terms he still made time to be seen! He might not have been the best, but he certainly didn’t treat his people like nobody’s. Can’t wait for another election we need them out now. Protest and recall.

So how about the young lady he said 'sit down little girl' to in a public meeting, not so long ago.  I think that may have made her feel like a 'nobody'.

Comments like these just prove how incredibly NAIVE some people are! Do you really think this is a West Bay issue?! Well, think again my friend and whilst you're at it get some real statisitics to back it up. I dont live in West Bay but according to many news headlines it seems gang related incidents are mainly in the Wild West however when it comes to burglaries/robberies this is an island wide issue – so sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news amigo! In addition, West Bay spans all along "Seven Mile" (which its only referred as when promoting area) therefore making it the biggest district resulting in higher crime rates. I do agree with many posts regarding the lack of good leadership and bad choices in the past but its time to get a Reality check andrealize that there is NO where on OUR little island that is off limits to CRIME..So wake up smell the coffee and start posting something constructive as you obviously are living in a bubble to have thought otherwise. Lets hope we can all pull together and get this under control otherwise not only the criminals but more of our youth will get caught up and follow this same trend sad yes, but true. Last but not least we need stricter consequences (not Hotel Northward) and less acquittals/lack of evidence – clearly the current system and police force is a joke to many of these criminals.

Something must be done now about all these robberies in such high traffic areas. This is not good for the country's image.  I am appealing to Caymanians young and old, please stop this nonsense if this kind of violence continues just imagined where we will be without tourism and investors.   Our politicians need to address the social issues that are affecting out people as this kind of anti social behaviour is a recipe for disaster; just remember when you destroy our country  we will have nowhere to go, I want you all to keep that in mind.

Was a man injured in the grocery store incident or a 6 yr. old boy which has been reported on other sites?

Then again, does it matter? Gun crimes are happening too often on this beautiful island!

I was on island when that handsome toddler was "caught in the gunfire" and killed at the gas station/4 way stop a couple years ago.  The island was horrified (as one could imagine- a gentle soul taken too soon from violence).

Another headline such as that will  sadly soon come, and almost was the other night…a young child "caught in the gunfire".

You've heard the saying" guns don't die, children do"

There is no forgiveness after the trigger is pulled. None.

      Put down the guns!
