Deputy governor leads by example over travel costs

| 15/10/2013

(CNS): With the new travel policy in place to keep costs down for government officials, both elected and administrative, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson led by example this week by releasing the details of his recent trip to London for a meeting of the UK’s deputy governors. The trip, from the 4 to 9 October, cost the public purse just $450 total for his three day per diem costs, as the flight costs and accommodation were all covered by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  Manderson released the travel policy form just days after his return in line with the policy that he has worked to put in place.

The new travel policy applies to senior civil servants as well as politicians and it is hoped that it will reduce unnecessary travel and keep costs down when politicians or senior public servants are obligated to travel on business. The new policy mandates that even the premier will fly premium economy or business rather than first class, unless it is unavoidable.

If getting someone else to pay for it all is "leading by example" then OK. Otherwise I fail to see what steps Franz hinmself  took to keep the costs down on this trip. Not that he won't next time when there is a choice of ticket and accomodation, I'm sure. A per diem of $150 is not unreasonable for such a trip, as travel is often inconvenient, although many private sector firms do not offer anything.

What class of airline travel did the FCO pay for? Bet it was Business Class – and quite rightly so! Why should our Deputy Governor or even the Premier travel in Economy or stay in flea bag hotels? I think we are straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel. Get real!

    Led by example?

he arrives to the airport, gets picked up and taken to a hotel, fed at the meeting, and taken back to the airport. Meeting is one day plus traveling where he gets fed in the plain.

lead by example would be to decline or donate the 450CI that went to his pocket, please find one private company that would have let a senior staff keep this money in similar circumstances

The answer is ALL – private sector companies would have done this. Shame on you for being so negative on this achivement in cutting the cost of travel. Being negative for the sake of being negative is stupid.

Err…don't know what planet you live on, but in most countries (including this one) you either get a daily allowance or are allowed to feed yourself on expenses.
