Jamaicans form association for future ganja industry

| 09/01/2014

CNS): Those advocating for the decriminalisation of ganja in Jamaica are preparing to launch a cannabis growers' association, as momentum builds towards the establishment of a formal ganja industry in Cayman’s neighbouring island. As politicians in Cayman remain tight lipped in the face of a campaign here to open the discussion on purely the medical use of cannabis, Jamaica is preparing itself for the financial windfall many believe will come once legislation changes. Encouraged by the legalisation of the drug in Colorado and Washington and in Uruguay, the development of a local, regional and international cannabis industry could generate billions of dollars for the Jamaican economy.

The Cannabis Future Growers and Producers Association will be launched later this month, according to reports in the Jamaican media, at a major stakeholders’ forum for the various entities planning a future in ganja at the University of the West Indies in Mona, St Andrew.

"We have invited representatives of the various organisations to come together at the forum to take their ideas forward," Paul Burke, a spokesman for the forum organisers, confirmed Wednesday. "The launch of the Cannabis Future Growers and Producers Association is expected to be one of the outcomes of the forum."

We will need no less than the Kirk Trader to do the runs between Jamaica and Cayman. NO MORE CANOES!!!!!  Come on Caymanians you have to march on this, dont let poor Mr Billy alone on this as he seems to be the only real man around now a day. We follow all the rubbish that our neighbours do and continue to ruin our once good little Island like you either pay for a bag or bring your groceries out in your arms. We resemble our neighbour Cuba with this style. How much more can we stand?

Yay, let's keep following Jamaica straightto hell.  We already are like them with hating all white people, running the foreigners out of the country, our culture has been completely taken over to the point that I heard a Caymanian telling visitors to try ackee and codfish as if it was our national dish, and last but not least our kids are speaking the Jamaican slang.  The next person that I hear saying "na true", I swear I will slap. I wish taht Caymanians would start thinking for themselves and stop following other cultures.

Let Jamaica Leagalize it and that would surely reduce our population. Jamaica introduced it to us in the beginning and to our detrimental. This has only been the ruination of our youth.Could it be legal for all those that want it legal? and leave us level headed Caymanians out of it please. Poor Ms Althea would come out of her grave if Alden goes along with that one.

"Could it be legal for all those that want it legal?"  That is basically making it legal.  If its legal you know you don't have to follow the crowd and start smoking as well, its all down to personal choice.  Its also down to freedom of choice, which has been taken away from the people for unknown and unclear reasons.

The way the world is currently being run is completely unsustainable.  Isn't it amazing that in this unstainable mode of production that there is a plant which can completely replace the majority of our neccesities.  On an island which has no natural resources other than our natural beauty (which we are content with destroying in order to promote 'growth') hemp can be our way forward.  I am waiting for the older generation who are so resistant to change to die off, it seems to be the only way forward.

    no joke.

Here is proof that Ganja kills.

Show me your proof that it can cure anything?

Getting high does not remove the sickness, Its like any legal drug you can buy to let your mind wander to different zones.

Sorry, but it is a joke.  It's not a real story, moron. Gullible people like you should step away from the keyboard and watch Fox News or something.

        Yes Devil.

I’m still waiting on proof that Ganja cures anything.

If Ganja could cure cancer, then I can tell you one thing, if anyone that would be immortal was the great Ganja smoker himself. The great Bob.

He died of cancer. What a coincidences that he smoked so much ganja and died of Cancer. Now that is something that is written and is known facts. Where were the medicinal effects when he needed it most?

Get off the "ganja is the cure" train. As the other poster said, go and ask permission to smoke it and get high in your own home, Share it with your family, one nice big high zoned out family. But leave us alone that do not want it or do not need it.

When was the last time you heard a raid on sick person smoking ganja. Everybody knows some sick person that is smoking ganja, it’s not for the cure, it’s only to ease up the pain by getting high.

If you don’t have proof then shut up and stay locked up and stay high, close your windows so not to pollute the air, just in case there is something in the smoke that can cause the rest of us Cancer.

Here is another angle, it has been rumored that the Caribbean has a higher than normal rate of cancer, if this is the case, could it simply be that because of the illegal use of Ganja that is the reason they are strange or hidden facts about how the person are getting sick? After all it’s not like they go to the doctor and say “hello Doc, I been smoking ganja”. So of couse the doctors are left baffled to determine the cause while we blame CUC and overhead electrical wires that are all over the world. Maybe a quick research could be done to monitor coincidence of the rates in jurisdiction that predominantly don’t have access to ganja and the areas that have high access. Let’s also monitor the Cancer rate in Colorado, before and after the legalization of ganja.

Decriminalizing ganja is an interesting idea; however, all the ganja heads are only saying they need it for curing everything. That is where I have the issue. Since getting high is not a cure. We do have to look at options of person getting a dirty police record for the use of Ganja yes, but that is a better fight than a lazy person just wanting excuse to get high all day while on social service handouts.

There are two main chemicals in ganja. THC and CBD. the THC gets you high and the CBD cures many things. Bob's ganja was likely high in THC and low in CBD which would account for the anomaly you point out. Also his cancer started in the foot if I remember and would not have received significant CBDs prior to spreading. It HAS been shown to kill cancer.  It also is great for many many other ailments.  No one is suggesting letting everyone smoke a joint. What the discussion is making it legal, in its chemical form, so we can treat many many people.  30,000 persons die each year from prescription drugs….none die from ganja…..open your eyes.

If you had studied your history then you would not look like you are scientifically illiterate. Bob Marley died from cancer but it was not due to him smoking ganja, it was becauser of a bruise that turned into a lump on his foot that he avoided for years after playing football.  Know your history before you speak and don't jump in the water if you can't swim

Any patient going through painful therapeutic program should ask their doctor about Marinol, an FDA-approved synthetic THC pill.  Our pharmacists could probably bring it in, if they don't already have stock.  Smoking is not a healthy or efficient drug delivery mechanism.

Try and keep a pill  or anything down when going through chemo treatment.

Smoking is not the only way to ingest cannabis, you can vaporize, ingest via oil which can be taken under the tongue or mixed in with food.
