Cayman ladies miss last chance to score

| 15/01/2014

(CNS): Despite a valiant effort by the national U20 women’s squad, they failed to scrape any points from their final appearance in the CONCACAF world cup qualifying tournament. In their last match of the competition with Honduras, neither team had any chance of qualifying but the teams were playing to settle the group rankings. Sadly, Cayman came out bottom when the Honduran team managed to put three goals in the back of Cayman’s net, while the hosts were unable to find the target. Meanwhile, Mexico’s win over Trinidad 3-0 will see the Soca Princesses face the mighty USA in the semi-finals, while Mexico take on Costa Rica.

Cayman finished bottom of group B with no points and no goals on the score board, while Honduras gained the three points and added to their score line to reach four goals across the tournament.

The tournament has a day’s rest Thursday and resumes Friday with the semifinal double. Mexico and Costa Rica will play the opener, followed by the encounter between the United States and Trinidad.

The eventual finalists, along with the winner of the match for third place, will earn tickets to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Despite the fact that we were much younger and inexperience etc…I believe our team could have been better prepared even if fitness wise. Too late now to change that so won't labor.

There is the saying "if you learn from defeat you haven't really lost". I am certain our team learnt something valuable from participating in these Championships.

Also Cayman hosting was beneficial to our country, sports tourism should always be encouraged. It was also wonderful to see the support thus far, I do hope Cayman on a whole continue to support all sporting events as they did this girls CONCACAF U20.

Get back to the drawing board girls…with dedication, hard work,  a good attitude and dicipline… you all can only improveAND you will get better.

Hopefully more of you will get the chance of a scholarship now which will give you more exposure. More importantly a chance to further your education and get a degree.

At the end of the day we cannot ask for more than that, so give it your best.  Keep at it and good things will come as a result!

More power to the ladies, but this is a very unfortunate headline.

This has been excellent experience for our young team.  It has not only exposed them to first class international competition but it has exposed our young players to scouts from many collages.

I am, and we all should be, proud of them and their efforts.   Also the organizers are to be congratulated also.
    Thank you all!

It's a shame the Cayman girls were overmatched, but this is hardly surprising with such a young team. Their opponents were simply bigger, heavier and faster and probably on average 2 or 3 years older.

It's not hard to qualify for the women's world cup from this Federation is it?  Surely CONCACAF should only have two qualifiers at most, and one in a year there is a CONCACAF host.

Actually, CONCACAF boasts 2 or maybe even 3 of the strongest teams in Women's football. USA as multiple defending World Champs, hosts Canada and Mexico will be among the favorites to lift the Cup later this year, so that's the reason they are allowed so many entrants.

Mexico are only ranked 25th.  There are 15 European teams ranked ahead of Mexico and Europe only gets 8 places.  So your logic fails.  2 slots, and 1 if Canada is host.
