Scrap metal heads to US CIG pockets $250k

| 31/01/2014

(CNS): Despite problems in the past for the government with the removal of scrap metal from the Geoerge Town dump, things seem to be going much more smoothly now. Another scrap metal tender has gone to Cardinal D Ltd, who has already paid the government $250,000 for 5,000 tons of metals at the landfill, which it is now in the process of removing. The US firm has worked with the government before, having shipped metal to China, and again won the contract in August of last year following a public tendering process. “The company has a barge on island to load the scrap metals. This is the first shipment under the current contract, and the barge is projected to be loaded with around 2,500 to 3,500 tons on this trip,” Roydell Carter told CNS Thursday. “A second shipment will be required to remove the balance of contracted metals. Scrap metals are also required to be removed from the Sister Islands. The scrap metals are being shipped to a company in Tampa for further processing.”

The waste metal loaded on to the barge was mostly cars and construction debris. As well as earning some cash for the public purse, the removal will clear space at the dump.

Keep on going with more recycling efforts and clean the road towards the dump off all the junk cars sitting around. Get an industrial size mulcher and convert the yard "trash" into mulch for the public   to purchase. Ban the use of plastic cups etc in restaurants.

Who to heck even owns that junk yard canyon near the dump? It's got to be illegal in 10 ways not even counting no biz license. Jeez, can't Cayman enforce anything?

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Have you heard that before, maybe from

Great Grand Dad?  That is because it is time tested and true.  There is great value stored in

Mt. Trashmore, aside from it's elevation. This shipment of scrap metal off these  isles is the best news we have heard in years.  Recent technological developments and a need to renew and reuse dwindling resources has made RECYCLING  the accepted norm in developed countries around the world.

Believe it or not, companies around the world will pay for your refuse.  A well managed recycling

program can be a source of income for any  government, especially with an affluent, consuming constituency.  Hey, if the program only breaks even, it is a win win situation.  More people employed and refuse moved OFF THE ISLANDS!  There are even several well funded, established companies that would love to BUY and run Caymans sewage treatment facilities.

This is what they do, and the do it right. Of course they will be looking to profit from this business investment, they know the value of sewage, and the CIG would be plugging up a money loosing hole in it's operations.  This would allow the CIG to focus on what they do best. Just clean it up now, this move forward has been a long time coming.  It may bea result of actually having a government in place that thinks more about the future of their country rather then lining their own pockets.

Actually, sewage is seperate from the dump and run by the water authority, and I have yet to see a news story reporting that it (sewage) is losing money.

It would be quite interesting to know the time frame that it took to accumulate this amount of scrap metal. Two barge loads. This would give us an idea of how long the country will need to store srap to make it worth while for a company to purchase it. While recycling is a greatconcept, in a small community we have to consider the other costs required to do such a process.

Thats a drop in the bucket. go around the ALThompson round-about, take the bypass to west Bay. 300 yards to your right, you will notice a new dump of vehicles stacked 30 feet high.

These are also ready for  recycling….and owned by a privat individual. This same concept could be done at the new facility. Bodden towners got shafted when Ozzie stopped such a great opportunity to "work, scrap and sell" the product from that facility.

Funny how it's running more smoothly under the new government. I wonder what the previous government might have been doing differently in relation to public tenders like this….? I think a lot of peopleknow the answer to that.

Good headline "heads to CIG pockets", novel concept  that the country should benefit, which would not have been grasped by the UDP government.

At 50 dollars U.S. a ton someone is getting a deal.  Scrap metal is normally running at 250.00 per ton here in the states…

    • Anonymous says:

"here in the states". Exactly. Now add the cost of shipping, trucking, etc. Don't forget to account for the round trip by the barge & tug.Plus the fact that the country WANTS to get rid of it.

This scrap is not in the states. It was sitting next to Mt Trashmore. Maybe YOU could have picked it up, trucked it to the port, loaded it on the barge, towed the barge to Tampa, and unloaded the barge for $200 a ton, but I doubt it.

The Government should have paid Cardinal D $250,000.00 to ship all that garbage off the island. I saw the barge loaded at the dock and thought that someone had bought the whole landfill and was taking it home. Enough of this nonsense about someone getting a deal, it went out for bids and if you wanted it you could have submitted a bid of $100.00 a ton since it is so valuable. It's a miracle they found someone to actually buy that shit.

I bet you look at prices here and say " I could have got that at Walmart for….." It costs just as much to ship to the US as bring from it. We are glad to get rid of it, the 1/4 Million is a bonus!

T New e govt just as well get something from it rather than be a sore eye to the public & visitors etc!

True, but CIG could still have it's own episode of "Hoarders". Wading around in it's own filth, and exposing families to toxic smoke from the tyres they've been hoarding forever "because they might be worth something someday"…

Are your head in the sand?? didnt you read that the Frank sound development project want those old tires??

I trust they are going to take all the scrapped and wrecked cars and other metal from the dump on the Brac??.
