McLaughlin bumped for Sudanese foreign minister

| 10/02/2014

CNS): Cayman will now have to wait at least one more day to see the recording of the premier on the BBC’s flagship news interview show HARDtalk. Alden McLaughlin’s head to head appearance with Stephen Sackur, which was recorded on 4 February, has been bumped from Tuesday to Wednesday, which means the first broadcast of the show on BBC World News will be 4:30am in London on 12 February, or 11:30pm local time Tuesday, and then again locally on Wednesday morning at 4:30am, 11:30am and then in the afternoon at 4:30pm. The slot is now being used to show an interview with Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Foreign Minister of South Sudan, where rebels have boycotted the latest planned peace talks.

Local officials in Cayman said that depending on news events, the programme could be moved again but once it has aired an audio version of the show will also be available on the BBC iPlayer or as a podcast. Video clips are also available on line but the full video is not available to viewers outside the UK on the show’s website.

Premiere McLaughlin gave Hardtalk nothing to talk about…his anti-corruption speech threw a monkey wrench in the plans to embarrass Cayamn on the show…a non-controversial interview does not sell TV space, especially in Britain.

The British public want angry faces and arguments, not smiling, affable interviews…and Mr. McLaughlin seemed to have taken the sting out of this interview in good 'ole Caymanian fashion…be friendly mon !

They wanted bad press that they never got so now the airing of the show will make McLaughlin and Cayman look too good for their liking.

This is the REAL reason why the show is being postponed…and probably will again…and by the the time it is aired, will be edited out of all recognition to what the interview actually was.

    Well done, Mr. McLaughlin !

You clearly were not watching the programme that I watched because I sat through the whole thing completely mortified.  He was clearly out of his depth, has had no media training and gave a staggeringly bad performance that was an embarassment to watch.  Cayman needs their spokesmen to be articulate, knowledgeable and media-savvy.  To the detriment of the case-for-Cayman, Alden was none of those.

Only someone personally opposed to Alden could say such a thing. There was nothing at all embarrassing about his performance. There were some points that he could have made but didn't and some points that he could have made better but overall his performance was a credit to him.

        Oh! Come now!

Shouldn't the headline be "McLaughlin bumped for South Sudanese foreign minister"?

Six months ago nothing about Sudan, North or South would have bumped anyone off their spot…seems if you have a civil war thenyou get top spot! You have to question whether giving these people (warring factions) airtime is really the right thing to do?..
