Troubled youth treatment centre eyes Cayman

| 25/02/2014

(CNS): A Canadian couple whose unlicensed youth treatment centre was shut down by the authorities in British Columbia may be seeking to set up a new rehabilitation centre for troubled youngsters in the Cayman Islands. However, it is unlikely to solve any of Cayman’s young offender problems. David (left) and Susan Kenney are facing at least four law suits from different families who say their children were bullied, abused and mistreated while in the care of the couple at the NeurVana Recovery and Wellness centre, which charged thousands of dollars a week to treat the young people placed there.

The centre advertised the use of advanced neuro-technology to "harmonize the brains" of the youths it treats for a range of problems from self harming to drugmisuse.

Reports from Canada suggest the Kenneys, who have relatives in Cayman according to local sources, are now attempting to create a new centre here by the spring despite having had their Canadian centre closed down the legal difficulties over the law suits. The legal action taken by the families involved allege various incidences of abuse, breach of contract, fraud and negligence at the former residential treatment facility which was located in Kelowna. From forcing vegetarians to eat meat to withholding medication from teen patients the law suits accuse the couple of numerous types of abuse and bullying none of which has yet been proven.

Concerns were raised by the families through their lawyers that the couple had not only left Canada in the face of the allegations and the sudden closure of the facility but were attempting to start the same kind of centre somewhere else.

The Kenneys, who say they have worked with children in various places for 20 years have via their attorney denied all of the allegations.

Isn't it amazing how people such as this man whose business was closed by the Government of Canada  and "according to this article was charged with abuse of some of these children, now wants to come to this island to open up a similar operation. Apparently he has family members who live here and so my question is! Have they spoken to someone here who have given them a nod of approval for this person to come here and open a similar facility? If so, it proves to me that people believe "and obviously so" that anyone can come here and get a license to open and operate a business as long as they can pay the fee. I hope not!

We have let convicted felons come here and work in law firms and rip them off for hundreds of thousands of dollars, yet this person "according to court records" had spent seven years in a South African Prison, yet no one seems in Government seems to have done a thorough check  on the person before he was allowed to come here to work.

We definitely need to beef up our national security, otherwise we will continue to have people of this caliber coming here and being allowed to work. God Help Us!

unless Cayman recognizes the problems of their youth and sincerely looks for a solution, this is the best you are going to get….look at the situation with the teachers.

Thank you CNS for bringing this matter to our attention.  I have heard of the allegations from Kelowna and am appalled that such a facility run by these people could even be considered here.  Service clubs, please be aware of the Kenneys trying to join your organization in an attempt to legitimize their residency here.

I hope that we the people of Cayman stand by and say NO to this at least until the four law suits against them have gone through the courts and a fair ruling is made! Then and only then should we maybe decide if this a "good" for the future of Cayman. Obviousy the authorities in Britih Columbia shut themdown as a pre-caution unti the matter at hand are resolved.

How do people with this sort of negative background get work permits and get into this country?

  9. Anonymous says:

So why in the world are they allowed to come here????Does Immigration really allow people with law suits pending to come here and start up any kind of business or service????

About time for someone tostart exposing and checking out these kind of people.  Thanks CNS.  Cayman governemnt doesn't vet people so Caymanians need to do it themselves.  We need to open up the owners of corporations to the public so we the people can check them out because government isn't doing it.

I seriously hope that our Government is not even thinking of entertaining this idea!!  Too many red flags!

So we are going to allow them to set up all the same……..

David Kenney's brother Jason Kenney is Canada's Cabinet Minister for Employment. Jason, of course, denies any federal involvement with NeurVana. The Kenneys have, nevertheless, strong political connections in Canada. Here's hoping their influence doesn't extend too deeply into Cayman. Otherwise they'll set up shop.

Let's see if our government grants the license and provide cayman status.
