Cubans on run as centre struggles with security
(CNS): Authorities are on the hunt once again as another group of Cuban refugees being detained by immigration left the insecure detention centre in the Fairbanks area of George Town. Officials said some 13 migrants escaped Wednesday afternoon and while ten were rounded up three are still on the run along with at least one other man who escaped last month when 33 refugees escaped by crawling under a perimeter fence. Last week another three men left the centre. Immigration officers said it is an offence to help the refugees who have escaped.

This recurring problem needs a creative solution. These people escape because they are housed in primitive conditions and suffer extreme boredom. I suggest Government employ them to patrol the perimeter fencea round Northward. This will solve the problem of drugs and cell phones inside the prison, and keep the Cubans happy as they will beearning Cayman dollars and can support themselves until they are repatriated.
Who's charge is the issue of Security. Is this being done by Immigration Officers standing post or is it contracted to a private firm? Who is in charge of whoever is suppose to be at watch. This is more funds wasted in any case.
Which Security firm is providing security at the detention centre? Are they so incompetent?
Security there is useless and not sure how come they are getting away with it, who is protecting this company? These cubans are escaping all the time with the same company watching them…..this is embarrassing and a waste of money.
The fact that we are paying to have a private company that has been in question for providing other services to the CI Governement at a heavy price tag and atbest not providing good value for money and cannotsecure their own belongings beg an answer. No one is saying that just because an inmate escapes it is poor service but this is the norm and costing the country funds that we do not have. It is time for a change and stop awarding contracts based on who is who but on what they can provide.
Why don’t we house and secure them in the Brac. Maybe at the hotel that is struggling to achieve full occupancy.
Change the stupid law and make these people go on their way..They are not criminals. Their boat broke down, help them fix their boat, give them some food and water and let them go on their way..
The British forced this on us to keep them here at our expense until Cuba says it is okay for them to come back..They don't want to be here they want to go to Honduras where they are welcomed.
Set them all free, I say!
I'll bet you wouldn't be taking that stance had Honduras been sending them on to Cayman! They are economic migrants, just like Haitians. They all help make Cuba what it is and thus should proudly stay and enjoy it, or change it for democracy where the free market reigns and they can freely choose how they wish their lives to turn out.
"..to Honduras where they are welcomed". Seems you are missing the point.
Simple solution – when RCIPS catch them, put the escapees straight on the next plane back to Havana.
We waste too much time and money pandering to these economic migrants.
I certainly hope you are Caymanian and not an economic migrant as well.
