Fire smoulders at the George Town dump Saturday
(CNS): The Cayman Islands Fire Service has said there was another fire at the George Town dump, Saturday. Fire officers identified a small area to the rear of the landfill that was smoking and appeared to be a surface fire. Immediately the crew jumped into action to start extinguishing the fire, officials said, while waiting for the excavator to overturn the garbage. Fire Chief Roy Grant requested that the fire trailer pump be brought to the scene straight away as it was beleived that the fire may be deep seated, and the immediate demand for water supply could be met the fire service added.

One problem with the dump is that the local officials are not fully into the recycle/scrap metal business yet
The problems will start being solved once they are ready/ but will only become worse
.I know one MLA is aquireing the property outside the dump where the car recyclers were and are now being pushed out of business so he can take over
I also know that another MLA with his operation Junk is setting up so that business must pay him for recycling their trash
I also know that another MLA is encouraging his friend that does hauling to keep bringing in new equipment to take over trash collection soon from Government
The problem I see with this is that your leaders have a full time job running the government and have no business setting up or running other businesses. The shady ideas and way of going about it will not work and will fail.
In the meantime the officials are using there friends that are in the CS to bust the chops of those not connected with their master plan and that goes way beyond the garbage business
Lets play the devil's advocate eh? Lets pretend the dump is in Bodden Town . OK Then it caught on fire like IT HAS BEEN DOING. Will we still not have a problem? Did the problem not just got bigger?/ Will we not have to smell the toxic fumes FROM Bodden Town to George Town STILL?? We can't stop the fires in town , what makes you think that we will stop the fires anywhere else??
Wake up !! Garbage needs to leave from Cayman recycled. Recycle it from town. If we moveit to any other district the problem is not solved.
If we were to begin another waste management facility elsewhere, we would still have GT dump.It would still catch fire and it would still stink.
If the GeorgeTown Dump is closed and properly capped and maintained there would be no risk of fires and if garbage at a new facility or even an old one is properly managed, while there is a risk it would be a lot lower that at a place where any and all types a garbage has just been dumped in a big pile for decades. Frankly I am amazed that they are still just dumping stuff on top of MT Trashmore. It should be called Mt ST Helens becuase it's just waiting to explode
We are just back from spending a week on your beautiful island. However I must say that the stench ruined our dinners and outing on more than one occasion. Not to mention the worry that what we were breathing in could be harmful to us or our children. We would say we would be back again one day but after reading some of these reports and comments we will think twice about it. We have travelled all over the world and besides China and some areas in Africa we have never felt our breathing so uncomfortable. Sorry 🙁
I must agree, somedays the smell in GT is so bad that you can't even eat outside at resturants that have outdoor seating.
Why would anyone in its sound mind buy a property here without knowing the level of accumulation of toxic substances in the environment caused by the dump? Open air dump as it is is probably violating human rights for clean air and water.
If you want clean air, just go half a mile north to Camana Bay.
We need to pass a law that all MLA's must turn off their car air-conditioners and drive with windows down when they drive between GT and West Bay. And perhaps the Minister of Tourism should also be required to daily walk up and down to the various restaurants along the west bay road in the early evening while trying to keep his food down after emerging from dinner in the hot, smelly air.
thank god Mr Grant is Back we have chief that knows paper don't out fire stay with us Mr Grant and he let is staff feel they dont need bay sitters
look at that mountain of trash, y'all should be ashamed of yourselves. that's nasty!
Ozzie "We must do something. Nothing is off the table"
The People "Move the dump to Bodden Town"
Ozzie "We can't do that. We must do something. Other than the best idea, nothing is off the table".
this is a tragedy !!
what a horrible situation
Why oh WHY ozzy dont you give the dump to dart ??
he will gladly take it for FREE and take care of it
This has to be done NOW we cant handle the stink no more !!!
PLEASE !
That's the BILLION DOLLAR question isn't it?
The billionaire offers to take your dump and deal with it? What do we do? Decline the proposal.
Cayman = backward thinking & backward doing.
Dump = nasty, stink & a threat to us all; MUCH like the PPM!
It completely obvious why the PPM doesn't give that dump to Dart and accept his offer, it's becuase they were basically elected on two promises. 1: No Dump in BoddenTown and 2: Inact OMOV. The later of which they already about faced on..
I can sense another photo from a certain developer's daily newspaper on the way. That last one must have cost an absolute fortune, surely. But more huffing and puffing in yet another increasingly desperate editorial at the very least. (Do wish they'd at least spell properly, it might at least lend some credibility to their very intellectual-sounding musings.)
Why dont we just get rid of the dump?
What is it going to take for someone to deal with the Country's #1 issue? The dump.
What do our elected officials really want?
Ozzie, if you don't have a plan (seems you don't) then ask someone else to handle it. Please, for God sake don't wait till the year before the next election to start talking shit about what you "PLAN" to do about the dump when you had 4 years to deal with it!!!!!!!
BT VOTER
"talking xxxx"??? Some people need their mouths washing out.
And some people need to take their head out of their a$$. Quite simple.
Asking someone else to handle it?
OUR GOVERNMENTS NO.1 PROBLEM.
Ozzie and his “committee” should be out there dealing with it. They are the ones that know what they are doing, right?
They are waiting for the protective suits to arrive.
Thank God , we have some of our good old Firemen back on the job. Certainly makes us feel safe again.
Thank God for an experienced fire man like Roy Grant , its a pity he wont stay for a longer period. The men respect his as a leader and know that the got their backs.
