Al la Kebab truck stick-up
(CNS): Police are on the hunt for a lone, local gunman who held up a food truck parked in Red Bay last night (Tuesday 22 July). Although no one was injured during the armed late night stick-up at the Al La Kebab mobile restaurant, the robber made off with an undisclosed sum of cash. The incident occurred just before midnight. Police said that 911 received the report at around 11.55pm. The truck was parked on the Red Bay Road close to the entrance of Selkirk Drive, George Town. The lone armed man had a slim build, was wearing black clothes a mask and a hoodie and spoke with a Caymanian accent. He was said to be carrying what looked like a silver hand gun when he approached the truck and demanded cash.
Witnesses said he eventually made off on foot with an undisclosed sum of money but the direction in which he went is unknown. No shots were fired and no staff or customers were hurt.
An RCIPS spokesperson said the officers on the case are seeking any information that may assist them with apprehension of the armed suspect. Members of the public who may be able to help are asked to contact 800TIPS (8477) or call the RCIPS hotline at 9497777 or any of the police stations in the Cayman Islands.

CCTV… quality vs. quantity? There are CCTV units that can read license plates, but the cost factor and profit margin. The guard if he was on duty should have taken a page from the Commissioner’s book, got in his vehicle and run over the fleeing culprit. Bicycle will not work. Poor guard all defenseless. Need to issue all guards SUV's.

Yes but it isnt a regular camera it only reads number plates. The other regular camera is by Hurleys in the middle of the roundabout.
I cant read the licence plate on most of the cars in front of me. Why would anyone think that a camera can read them.
AMPR automated plate recognition is why the cameras can see the numbers it's technology that's far better than our eyes. Police need to be proactive not reactive. They should know the hotspots. Not saying they can be very where at the seem time. From the instant the robbery was reported the officer i charge at GTPS should have been monitoring the cameras in the area and direct the officers accordingly and put them in strategic positions. Wow more energy is put into planning a roadblock than apprehending suspects. Allow the civilians to do a David Baines on them suckers mow em down stop ontop of em and leave em pinned between the car n the ground. No excessive force. And u gots way more civilians than we got Police and we always all over the place all hours of the day and night!!!!!
Can anyone honestly say has any of these CCTV cameras all over the island help identify anyone committing a crime and was able to prosecute them from it? I don't recall, so one would wonder why did we have to spend millions of dollars on something that isn't working???????
You are wrong. One of his neighbour’s told me someone stole David Baines boat trailer. CCTV footage was used to trace the vehicle to its destination, the culprit identified and the trailer returned. So they can be used if someone can be bothered.

Yes. The criminals that robbed the cnb on west bay road were tracked down after changing cars and splitting up by piecing together several cameras from all over the island. The video was instrumental on catching and convicting them. I don't of other times, but the cameras worked amazingly for that case.
20:09, i don't think it was the cameras that was instrumental in convicting them….the car they were using for the bank robbery was their own and the armoured car blocked it it, so hence the plates they were able to trace, then they ran to the round about and again, their own car burgancy i believe suv picked them up, again plates…so not sure where you are getting your information from….
So you believe that the CCTV is able to see through masks & hoodies? If that was the case very robber going into a professional business would be caught. Have you not seen the images of the bank robberies. CCTV is just one tool in possibily solving these crimes.

You are correct, but let me remind you that the last generaton that was taught by Caymanians was 40 years ago every other generation were raised by helpers many who were very good with the children and a few who were no good. The children of today are the results of the training that they got from some of their helpers who plyed them with stories of what happened in their home country and many of our young people tried to imitate and often emulate the bad man/woman stories that they were told by some of those helpers when they were young and impressionable. I will not only lay blame at the helpers who did not do a good job with some children, but will also blame many of the parent of those children who did not take intrest in their children and thought that the children were the total responsibility of the help 7 day per week and even during vacation. There is an old adage which says you get what you paid for and reap what you sow. Maybe this is just what is happening in Cayman with our young people.
So now it is the helper' s fault?

People receiving assistance need to be held accountable for ensuring that they use the assistance to better themselves by acquiring new skills and integrate into society within a short period of time.
We need to force the unemployed and the welfare people to be accountable for acquiring new skills. Mandatory attendance for training, sessions with councilors, jobinterviews, intervention programs etc. Paying them to stay home and incentivizing them to have kids in order to increase their social benefits doesn't work! We are failing our own by teaching them that they deserve everything without any accountability simply because they are Caymanian. Sad.

First look at the hoodie, colour style etc.
Now roll the cameras back and look for a man in a similar hoodie headed in that direction.
In order to minimize suspision I would bet money that he put the mask on about a minute before he did the deed.
Where I grew up (much bigger population in USA) we had suburb cops that were much smaller police forces, but much more effective! I would never dare roll through a stop sign or speed on a neighborhood street, because I would be caught. Let's face it, our local police presence is pitiful and the crooks know it.
I have said this AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MEETINGS!! That Both Red Bay and Prospect need assigned patrols, period. Come on? with 400 policemen and 100+ cop cars, we can't have a 24/7 "beat cop" driving around the Red Bay/ Prospect area? Please.
Each district should have a 24/7 patrol and PUBLISH the contact cell number so can effectively HELP to police.

I understand your point but we need to fix the root of the problem. What can we do to ensure less of our people resort to crime? We need to reduce the demand of policing rather than increase the supply of policing to meet the demand.
It starts at at childhood stage. We need to monitor and support kids from low income families and intervene if parenting is not adequate.
Here is a true story. My family owns an aftershool learning centre. A six year old boy showed up everyday from 3-6pm, picked up toys and books and played with them. When asked why he was not going straight home aftershool he mentioned that mom and dad were at work. At closing time 730pm my wife drove the little boy home. When reaching the low income residence the grandma came out of the house and hit the little boy. He never showed up again since. There is a boy looking for help at the age of six, choosing to spend his time in a learning environment but poor parenting is pulling him in the wrong direction.
Thats sad – can you report them to anyone to see that he gets the help he needs. Some people just shouldnt have kids.

You must be referring to the ones that came in during MacEvils Status Grants..Before that there was really no crime certainly no robberies. People could leave thier windows and doors open at night. You conveniently ignore the 7,000 or so also unvetted dependents who came and were almost certainly illegally admitted and made Caymanian in direct consequence, and the statistics exist, but Government refuses to keep or share them.
I think you would find, if you cared to investigate (something the police have not even cared to do, it seems) that a large number of recipients had been here for much less than 10 years, and in some cases, perhaps not at all. In addition, thousands more became Caymanian as a result without having lived here at all previously.
