Corrupt cop gets 3 years
(CNS): A police officer accused of soliciting a bribe from a Filipino national in exchange for not prosecuting him regarding a suspected stolen cell phone has been handed a three year jail term. Justice Charles Quin handed down the custodial sentence Thursday to former police officer Elvis Kelsey Ebanks in connection with four charges of corruption and the first conviction of a public officer under the anti-corruption law. The judge said that it was difficult to find any mitigating factors in the case, in which Ebanks has shown no remorse and continues to claim the solicitation of the bribe was merely a loan offered by the complainant, a claim the judge said was "implausible'".
In the wake of the sentence, a police spokesperson said the RCIPS will not tolerate corruption among its ranks and will pursue any allegation of corruption.
Although Ebanks was remanded in custody to George Town police station, his attorney has appealed the conviction and is seeking bail on behalf of his client until that case can be heard. A hearing was scheduled for 9:15am in Chambers Friday.
Check back to CNS later for the full story and the judge's reasoning behind the sentence.

Wow it seems you are better off gang raping a teenager at batabano or video taping the violation of a 13 year old girl you are coaching than taking a bribe ……I am happy he got what was coming to him but I am tired of the judicial system sending a message loud and clear that women and children are worth less than 500 ……XXXX
He did not know right from wrong.
its not really his fault
to be safe he should do his time in another prison
and they should not let the other inmates know he was a cop
It is so sad that he is just a product of society at large
I hope some other people on this rock learn from his mistakes
It seems to me that grater than 5% of locals are facing the same mental defects.
Just a thought, whats the population of northward? Shouldnt northward have its own MLA?
CNS, you have a thumbs up, thumbs down, troll, and smiling face. I recommend you add a question mark (?) buttom too. Because alot of time I read comments and I don't know whether to laugh, agree or disagree, and I certainly don't want to be impolite and say its a troll. 🙂
?
That would be the "WTF" button.
Putting him in the same place as those he arrested won't be a problem as he never arrested anyone!
Just want to know how ethical it is to make an ex-officer serve his sentence with the same criminals that he arrested? Does this goes against human rights? Can someone explain?
He is a criminal. Criminals go to jail. Simple. Human rights implications nil.
Corrupt po-po should have thought about that before he started asking for bribes. Tough.
Perhaps the police officer should have thought about where he would end up if he was caught breaking the law?
What is stop others from doing so if they know they won't go to Northward?
Put him in pison where he belongs with the rest of Cayman's thieves.
Poor old Elvis those who know better do better and his upbringing is unfortunately now a reflection of his current criminal situation. He had no role models so what does one expect can't say i am surprise some are so wicked and use to taking other people things they feel they have some right to do so. His clear lack of respect for the law and office which he swore to uphold as a police officer is a disgrace and great dishonor to the Cayman Islands His subsequent behavior and lack of remorse and arrogance during the trial is proof of all of the above and stands as a prime example for alot of young Caymanian males who lack good parental guidance. Yet some claim they can counsel others to do right thing.
Why the hell some of you useless stupid dumb ass people don't go get a life instead of reading news articles and then jumping on here to be the first too cast the first stone. Since clearly all of you posting stupid comments without firstly even personally knowing the defendant and whom he really is or what he is about, since ya'all up on here running down the defendant it's obvious that you idiots know the defendant and all about his supposed criminality then why in gods name you didn't report him from the instant you were aware rather than allowing the Defendant to remain a servicing memeber of the RCIPS for 12 years!!! Clearly the comments made are just done so out of mere and utter stupidity cause ya all don't have a god damn thing to do " the crab in the bucket mentality" nothing ever reported about the defendant but the minute his world is turned upside down suddenly the freaks come out of the woodworks to have there 2 mins of fame. Get a god damn life and stop with the negativity. I certainly hope that ya all are as strong as he is to deal with it for 2 years. XXXXX
Come on! Who threw that stone? Come on.
If you start to early you have to go to the back.
Are there any women here?
I have some beards for sale.
Nobody shall reply to anyone and I want to make this perfectly clear, until I blow the whistle.
Even if they say Jehovah?
You eat with that mouth?
The poster does not talk out of his mouth. He obviously uses the other end.
Oooh he's having a go at the freaks now and it was the crabs in a bucket fault a minute ago.
He's making it up as he goes along.
Its called freedom of speech Einstein.
17:49, What I want to know is how many others fell foul of this police officer by paying him bribes? Because God knows this was not his first time doing it, but rather his first time being caught doing it.
They must remember once a police twice a civilian. Handle people with respect when your in uniform, we are all humans regardless, of the circumstances, one will fine them self in no one is perfect. You and those same people will meet in northward.
Civil servants and HSA Doctors/Staff and HSA basically face no liability because of something in the law called "BAD FAith" that has to be proven in order for them to face liability personally for their actions….I am glad to see the tides changing and persons are being held accountable for their actions individually instead of the MAss having to pay? Thank you Honourable QUIN..
It time for civil servants along with police officers to pay from their own pockets–then they think twice about their actions instead of the norm of having protection under the law?
E.G. when the judge was falsely arrested the other day—the mass had to pay! Yet it was negligence on a few individuals?
Can wait to see my boy in da big house wid he big talk i wonder wha goin happen when he get to Northward will he make dat call ??????? What a scandal
As a country we needed this ruling. Hopefull this will be a wake up call to the others and start a clean up of the corruption that is rampant on this island.
It takes a criminal to catch a criminal…………….
Good job now I hope the judiciary will go after those members of the RCIPS who hang out with known criminals from their home country and put a stop to the many police officers who smoke ganja with their friends at get togethers and those who beat up on their spouses.
Amen to that! You are 100% accurate.
I am sad for the family of this disgraced RCIP officer, especially the children who played no part but will suffer for this man's behavior.
Please do not make the children of this man responsible for the criminal acts of this man.
The blame is his alone.
I am sure there are others that will follow him.
Given how he behaved, and his pathetic attempts to stay out of jail, I wish him the most miserable time possible on the inside. Fully deserved.
Good decision for great reasons – his attitude at trial and sentencing was awful.
I was an observer in the court for his sentencing as I do with other court matters everyday or just about, from what I observed with this defendant at his sentencing hearing was his demeanour and attitude was that he sat in the dock motionless as the judge read out his written decision and the time that the defendant would receive. His attitude an behavior was pretty much the seem throughout all of the trials that he had from my observations! So I am unsure what he did that was so despicable and awful. I was wondering if the person that posted the comment could shed some light on what the saw, as I am wondering what they deem despicable and awful. That way I can know exactly what an what not too look for in other defendants in other cases.
While I applause this action and hope it sends a clear message.
I do however find it a bit disheartening that there are other serious issues that have been and continue to occur within the RCIPS and that have been reported, but have been swept under the rug.
What I am referring to is the complete mismanagement and often criminal actions that have been perpetrated by a certain set of persons of "superior" heritage. These are the same people that have covered up very serious actions and have persude the local officers relentlessly.
Until there is a complete change in the style of policing here then this situation will only mean that local officers will be targeted and this other set will continue to go on unhindered.
In the coming months the general public will become more aware of what is going on as there are a couple of issues that will be brought to light that will shake and possible break the current monopoly down. And for those who do not know there are two sets of specialists on Island for the last few months from two different modern countries making discrete enquiries into some of these matters.
In time we will all know.
So true! Glad to see some people are seeing the bigger picture here. There is alot more work to be done if we are to TRULY clean-up the RCIPS.
Hopefully, the "specialists" from "modern countries" are not from the Grammar police otherwise you will be the first into the van.
So are YOU the grammar police? You're one of the most annoying persons that has nothing better to do but come on and this site and insult people about spelling and grammar. We all understood what the previous poster wrote so what is your problem? If you are getting your panties all in a bunch because of this minor issue, don't read it!!
Try to avoid contractions other than when reporting direct speech.
Try go away!
Presumably you are meaning "Try "Go away"!".
No, I am not from the Grammar police but I am willing to lend a hand and give up my own time to get the previous poster into the van.
Oh, sorry "MATE", I didn't realize I was winning an award for grammar. Guess you one of those "Superior Heritage" people around here.
Anyways I don't really care, I think there are more important things going on around here than someone else's use of grammar. Sorry if you can't get the point, must be your perceived "Superior Heritage" (or lack there of).
Like a famoussong says Here In The Real World……………………Ivan Suvivor…….All others can suck on eggs……..
Judging by the amount of time and effort you have put into your posts and replies, I find it very hard to believe that there are more important things going on.
I seriously doubt it.
If that was the case, why have they involved you and how much will they think of you now that you have outed your imaginary specialists?
Hey, like the Dodge Commercial says "If you know then you know, if you don't know then you don't know".
Also if you you drive onAirport Rd. Then you will come to a big building, there will be a bunch of aircraft on the other side behind the fence. You know the same type you came here on. May I make a suggestion and use one, any one will do.
May these people are here for you?
No worries Kool coatings gots the money$$$$ to pay da bills a money tree grows right next door eh!!
What nationality is he?
He son of the soil bobo.
nip it in the bud ! good example for the others to think about.
"my boy" i hope they dont find him "crying in the chapel" no doubt he is "all shook up" now
I'm pretty sure sure he won't be lonesome tonight.
Hounddog!
Don't be cruel
Thank you Justice Quinn.
About time people start getting whats comig to them.
September can't come fast enough.
Very good Judge Quin. He should not get any bail. It is dispicable for a police officer to tarnish the good reputation of the RCIP and his peers and should pay the price for doing so.
Wa you say the good wa of who, sleep on the next side ya get up from U, no sarcasm intended.
