Fire crews still dousing smouldering dump

| 19/08/2014

CNS): Officials from the fire station confirmed Monday evening that five fire fighters were still at the George Town dump attending to the smouldering debris after a fully-fledged landfill fire on Sunday morning. The fire service also offered “a multitude of thanks” to some local business owners who provided breakfast and dinner to the twelve members of the fire service on duty through Sunday and Monday who were tackling the blaze. Garry Rutty owner of Burger King, Judy Wight from Pizza Hut and Dave and Martha Crawford from Crawford Electrics generously helped to keep up the fire fighters’ collective strength by ensuring they were fed during their battle with the dump blaze.

Given the volatile nature of the landfill fire officials said that the dump would continue to be saturated and while there was no longer any sign of smoke the crews would continue to focus on the original area of ignition throughout Monday night to be sure.

Lets be frank about the dump, everyone who does not live in George Town could care less about the dump as long as it stays where it currently is located and can continue to be mismanaged and burn. The Boddentown voters showed politicians that they do not care and Alden & Ozzie have listened.

So the tribal district mentality remains firmly in place and in the Boddentown heart of hearts I am sure they do not care and are proud of the fear they put into the PPM.

i think this was a good guesture of the business people to give the fire fighters food.  That is how we should always live .  The all night gas stations should offer free coffee and tea to police and firemen  officers on night duty too

The firefighters are literally sacrificing health and shortening their lives here.  Thank you guys.  I just wish you remembered that you are no invincible.  More than 1,100 people who worked or lived near the World Trade Center on 9/11 have been diagnosed with cancer(AS OF 2013).  In September 2012, federal health authorities added 58 types of cancer to the list of covered illnesses for people who were exposed to toxins at the site of the World Trade Center.

I recently moved in to a very expensive (for me) condo towards the south end of 7 Mile Beach.  Before the weather got to proper summer heat it was lovely, but over the last few weekends  the stench from the dump has made it nearly unbearable.  It is impossible to sit out and enjoy the amenities in the stink of putrefaction which wafts over the Island's premier real estate.  This weekend I had to stuff the gap in the front door with dishcloths to stop the awful smoke from the fire coming into my apartment.   Tonight, as the firefighters continue to pour precious water over the smouldering pile of garbage, the stink is disgusting.

This needs to be sorted and sorted soon before this Island loses business due to the stink.   The government is clearly incapable and the business owners don't seem to care.  In the meantime we're all being trapped in our homes by noxious fumes.  It's not good enough.
