Gunshots pepper West Bay
(CNS): Although no one appears to have been injured, the police have revealed that the gunshots reportedly fired near Super C’s restaurant in West Bay in the early hours of Saturday morning were not an isolated incident. An RCIPS spokesperson confirmed Monday that officers have now recovered more spent shells and casings and discovered bullet holes at several more locations. Alongside the spent shells found not far from Super C’s following a report about gunshots being heard there at around 4:50am on 23 August, police have now also found a bullet hole in the plywood sign to the rear of the restaurant. Aln undisclosed number of spent shells have also been found in front of a residence on Jefferson Road and at another in Topaz Lane, all in West Bay.
Police said the home on Topaz Lane was struck by what appeared to be a bullet. Officers are continuing their enquiries into the discharging of weapons but have not yet stated if more than one weapon was involved or if reports that the people involved were firing from a motorcycle are accurate.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the West Bay Police Station CID at 949 -3999 or CRIME STOPPERS at 800-8477 (TIPS).

Bet if the jail here was more like the one in Panama there would be less of this! If the parents on the outside had to pay for their punk kids inside the jail bet they would put more care into raising them. If the 'gangsters' knew they wouldn't even have toilet paper to wipe their …. things would be differant around here. And I woudn't be against them havig to buy water either – I have to buy it after all- why shouldn't they? Oh you want some a/c and light in your cell – that cost money too!
To 18:25 Bravo! I moved to WB 25 years ago from another district. To date I have never had a bad experience or regret living here. In fact, I can't see myself living anywhere else on this island right now. WB offers all the commercial conveniences of George Town and has the beach as a bonus! As far as crime, sadly it has the same occurrences as any other Cayman district. There are burglaries, gunshots and have been murders but being a victim depends on what part of town one lives, who one associates with and/or what activities one involves themselves with. I wouldn't doubt that perhaps crime in WB is reported more to sensationalize and politicize the situation.
Cayman and the entire world has changed from the "good old days" and society has become generally more dangerous. I can't say that WB is any more dangerous than any other part of Cayman. But thank God for the memories of the "good old days".
09:26, great story.
But the facts speak for themselves, in the last 10 years, 80% of the murders occurred in the heart of WB. And when they occurr it is not isolated, there are 3-5 murders at time.
Well the other day my husband sent some tourists there for food. They loved the island experience……………….
Gated communities. They are desperately needed. And a permanent check point on all roads out of West Bay.
There are gated communities – just drive through and look for a house for sale.
Wish people would be quiet about west bay like anywhere else is any better, maybe we should bulldoze the rest of the island and make it a parking lot for us west bayers B)
If you believe that then you wouldn't mind separating and floating away!
You still wouldn't be able to park between the lines
Surely there can't be THAT many criminals in West Bay?
There were also a lot of shots fired somewhere around Topsail by Cobalt Coast that night because I was sitting outside when they unloaded. West Bay is not a bad place though. It is the first place that I have ever lived that gunshots would make the news. If someone even calls the cops for gunshots, then you live in a safe place. Most cities that I lived in in the US you could hear shots several times a day every day. No one would ever call the police unless someone was hit.
15:50, We would rather not let Cayman get anywhere near that of the US or Jam in terms of gun violence, but the sad part is we are very close.
Chickens coming home to rooste, results of the status grants of 2003. Unemployment and high crime. Fellow Caymanians, it is really sad to see what is happening in Cayman. Unfortunately this is happening to Caymanians by caymanians.
The WB violence has nothing to do with status grants you idiot, it's two gangs fighting over drugs and pussy.
Gangs whose members in part recently got Cayman papers.
10:21 these are little Caymanian fobish boys Who have jobs but a bunch of nuisance to society Who needs to be off the streets. Dont blame the status grants, the parents should be held responsible as they allow these punks to live with them knowing what they are doing.
Thats a low bar..would like to think Cayman sets its bar a little higher..
Good point
Property valves always going down in west bay! That corner is nothing but trouble! I say government use some of that money they been spending on them selves, pay super c off and bull doze that shit hole down.
That's how they always try to fix trouble spots in WB. Guess what? It ain't the shit, but the flies that hang around it. Plow them all down and you'll just hear about Georgetown or red bay being peppered
Can't police just bring them all together and put them in one room? Let them deal with it themselves.
If they use the Quarry at Pedro, we all ascitizens can watch and throw rocks at them from above.
All we need to do is round them up, put them in the quarry with guns and the lastman standing gets a trip off-island never to return again.
Ooh I like this idea! The government can make some money by having a entrance fee, selling snacks like hotdogs and popcorn and drinks! Entrance tickets can even have VIP areas, all inclusive alcohol, bottle service. Maybe even pictures at the entrance and sell t-shirts.
Nevermind the rocks. Arm them all. They can pick one weapon each. Broadcast it on local television or Cns maybe you can sell subscriptions to watch it if we are unable to view in person. Brilliant idea 16:24, if I was hiring I would take you on for thinking out of the box. Excellent comment.
Not a bad idea.
If interested google "Operation Ceasefire" and read how Boston, MA (USA) dealt/is dealing with their gang and gun problem since the 90's. It is a huge project involving police, probation, church groups, schools, and the community.
Yeah, cause that is really working out in the US. You obviously missed the initial commentator's point – he wasn't saying get the gangbangers together to solve their disputes; he said to get them together and let them kill each other.
If you took the time to google the site listed you would have seen that Operation Ceasefire has helped the gang situation in Boston.
I did understand the initial commentator's point, but I chose to suggest a better option (instead of more violence) which I thought people on this site were trying to stop. I still personally believe that the more people who get involved (RCIP, schools, churches, community) the better the chances of stopping/controlling the violence.
You realize you just asked the police to do something, right?
West Bay has been ruled by the same prominent politician for 30 years. Is there any wonder we have the social problems that we do have in West Bay given his policy of handouts/welfare payments while they sit under the trees and smoke weed and cocaine.
Well the chickens have come hometo roost because the money is DONE !!!
Just imagine if he was allowed a second chance as Premier to entrench his failed policies nationally.
It is time for a serious change in West Bay !
CaymanKInd !
This is a local hang out for all the crack heads jobless bayers. As long as they can get a 345 beer then they good to go. No jobs but they all drinking, bumming money from tourist that stop there thinking this is a mouth watering place like ad on the radio states. Well i can tell you it is not. Pull up there anytime of day and they smoking weed and anything else they can get they hands on.
Local hangout? It is not only Bayers that are there hanging out. THere are visits from people all the way from the East, BT and GT….. I do however, agree with your other comments.
West Bay is so salt!
I will link all these robbery items to tripadvisor.
Politicians won't do a thing about it, since they need the public to be distracted so they can continue to fill their pockets with YOUR MONEY !
Wild Wild West………………Bay
Should break off, and float away…
Use the National Building Fund to dig a trench across WB Rd at the Kimpton and leave the Republic in the capable hands of Mac, their illustrious Poker God.
As a West Bayer I say so true……
I take WestBay over EastEnd any day! TALK THAT!
Few bad areas in West Bay, just stay out of them, the whole EE need to be chopped off!
This is just too much. I am NOT going to Grand Cayman again until these gangs are broken up. What are your police doing about this?
19:23, they are probably reading your comment on CNS, scratching their heads wondering what to do.
You think they can read? A severe over estimation in my view..
11:05, I would hope so! Lets wait and see, I think they are still typing their repsonse to my previous comment.
Watching it all on CCTV from the comfort and saftey of their comfy chairs.
Oh noooo, not the comfy chair!
So, lemme guess there are NO gangs, and there is NO crime, where you are, right? What a STUPID comment! Next…..
You got that right BOBO there are no gangs where I come from and if that is the best response you can come up with then you are also part of the problem.
This is a serious problem.
Not a stupid comment. Why pay to go to a crime riddled country.. So you hae a nice beach …That dont impress me much..
From what I have been reading lately in the news- they (people in power) are starting to develop programs to target these issues. The police have started a program working with "at-risk" youth to mentor them and work with them with academics and job training. A few articles below this one is a program for mentoring in the schools. I am sure this will also target "at-risk" youth. The bigger question is…..what are YOU doing about this problem in YOUR community? Are you just sitting around *itching about it or are you becoming involved?
11:03, my invovlement would be to put these guys out their misery, but thats not legal, and they will do it to each other anyway.
They do not want a job or a career, being a gunman or drug deaer is it for them, they know this and don't care. You know why?
Because if they wanted to change, they would. That is what needs to happen and until they change themselves, it will be the same old shit, different day.
It involves hard work, its not an overnight thing and like so many other things in Cayman, they expect it to happen over night, but thats not how it works, you need to put in the effort, and alot of it.
It's easier to them because that is what "they" know, but if "you" took the time to show them a different way (a different skill), then you just might peak their interest. Alot of these "drug dealers" and "gang bangers" are pretty smart young men who if given a chance can have a different career with the right mentor. It takes a lot of time and energy in the beginning to convince them that the "legal way" will get them somewhere, but it can and will pay off in the end.
I applaud what the police are doing. Their program WILL work if they do not give up. They will not change all of those "at-risk", but that program that they started will grow and be successful. It will take time, but the police have it right- attaching academics, jobs, daily or weekly checks. Kudos to them.
I totally agree with your – the community need to come together and help stomp out this gun violence and the parents of these little boys need to do their part as well and turn them in!!
My best suggestion is have your children get involved in sports or clubs. Too much idle time is not good for children/teens these days.
11:03. The only thing to control the increase of at risk children is to tie off the producers, who are nusiances themselves. If they can produce them let them work and take care of them, and that includes the useless fathers. Government needs to stop supporting slimes.
23:26 I am sure that is part of the problem. A good health program in the schools that discuss birth control, std's, aids, etc. and not just abstinence would be a start. A clinic that hands out condoms and birth control to teens no questions asked would also help. I know, condoms etc. can be purchased at the local gas station, but when they can get them free and they know where they are available, it does help to cut the teen pregnancy rate (even though that does not make people happy).
