OCC gets new 12 month contract
(CNS): The complaints commissioner who has been in the post since August 2010 has been reappointed for one year. Nicola Williams told CNS that she had recently been given the contract which will see her stay in the job until August next year. This watch-dog post which is an independent public sector role is usually given to the holder for five years and it is not clear why Williams was given a one year contract. However, CNS understands that no open competitive recruitment process was undertaken prior to Williams’ first five year contract coming to an end.
The office recently celebrated its ten year anniversary and Williams is just the second person to hold that post. During that time complaints departments have been established in all government authorities but the OCC still sees a significant number of people coming to them as their complaints have not been handled properly by the relevant government entity.
Williams has also conducted a small number of own motion reports since taking office including one which revealed the extent of pension delinquency, the failure of the public sector management to protect whistle blowers as well as problems with occupational health and safety.

I have to question the real purpose of this Complaints Commissioners office. They do not handle any complaints against the RCIP, the Judiciary, the DPP nor do they handle any complaints in respect to an government entity that does not respond to you regarding a position you applied for. So why do we need it. It makes no value for money sense. Dismantle this office and give more scholarships with the money used to operate this office to Caymanians.
My question is : Why hasn't the Information Commissioner's job been advertised ? Jennifer Dilbert's official retirement took effect on the 30th June 2014 so why hasn't this post been advertised ???

To 8:58 it is not all about saving money. It is about accountability and exposing the wrongs and corruption in government. That in itself should save us money especially in light of the credit card debacle now coming to light.
We all know why she was only given one year. Duh! She is doing her job properly without fear or favour and that does not go down well with any politician in the Cayman Islands. They don't like to be exposed. She cannot and will not be manipulated. The truth hurts.
Somebody don't like her. Anytime ppl do there jobs it's a problem in these islands. Look out for the FOI office to shur down soon.

I would not be surprised if te EY report suggested combining the Complaints Commissioner and Information Commissioner's posts and staff and appointing a Caymanian. It would save plenty money.
