Grand Cayman suffers lunchtime power loss

| 26/08/2014

(CNS): Customers across Grand Cayman suffered power blackouts for several hours on Tuesday when CUC had problems with the loss of power generation at its North Sound plant. The technical problems impacted homes and businesses in George Town, Seven Mile Beach, Bodden Town, West Bay and North Side when more than 5500 of CUC's 28,000 customers suffered rotating power outages between 11:38 am and 2:05 pm though most blackouts were less than an hour long, a spoksperson for CUC said. Apologizing for the loss of supply she explained that the power outages were down to a temporary shortage in generating capacity.

This was due to the sudden loss of one of the company’s generating units. This then triggered a cascade in loss of other units. "CUC’s maintenance crews worked as quickly as possible to return the generating units to service in a safe manner and to restore power to all customers," the firm's spokesperson added.

According to the UN (so it MUST be true!), rolling blackouts are one of the indicia of third world status.

Can we please have alternate energy sources and no monopoly? Solar, wind turbine ( yeah that local dollar radar that supposedly cost us wind turbine energy is real useful…not) no doubt CUC will charge us extra for the repairs, sigh if someone asks what the number one problem facing us today can we include CUC prices as they have a huge knock on effect at least force them to remove all the surcharges which are more than the bill!!

Alternate sources of energy produce less reliable supply.

Can we also have some more punctuation?

Maybe they could replace your former teacher since that person obviously did such a bad job.

Wow, if we could capture all the energy people expend on commenting on punctuation, we would have us a whole bunch of energy!! I can see the headlines "Cayman Pioneers PunktyPower"

    So third world.

    What compensation do customers get?

You are not paying a cent for every minute that CUC fail to deliver power:  think of the savings on AC, lights etc that you are therefore not using.

Personally I think CUC should be commended for their innovative thinking in helping all residents save on their utlity bills.

12:27, You are either deluded or work for CUC, probably both.

Cutting the power for 2+hrs takes a shitload more to get my house back to 79 degrees, especially when its 200 and eleventeen degrees outside.

How did they save me money when all the food in my fridge and freezer spolied as it was turned off for 2hrs+? Thats right, it doesn't you spaz.

        It costs us more.

Will CUC take any of this into account? Hell no, they will bill us for it.

You can afford to chill your house to 79? …f..me. I can barely keep a 2/2 condo at 81 for 470 bucks a month. Still im sure CUC will pay a nice dividend come year end….must be good to be on the gravy train.

Some people just love to roll that third world expression off their tongue. If you really want to experience third world you should take a trip to a less fortunate country where there are blackouts every day for those who have the privilege of access to electricity.
