Cops open murder enquiry

| 08/09/2014

(CNS) Updated: Police have confirmed that the 24-year-old man shot and killed Sunday night was Solomon David Webster. Although few details of the murder have been released, it is understood that Webster was the victim of gang violence and was gunned down somewhere between his home in Daisy Lane, in the Logwoods area of West Bay, and the district clinic where he was found, a stone’s throw from the school. The incident was reported Sunday evening at around 8:30 and he was taken to hospital by the emergency services, where he died earlier this morning. Police said they are pursuing a specific line of enquiry and an incident room has been opened. Anyone who has information on the first local murder of 2014 is asked to call 649-3057.

The head of the local police station recently confirmed a heightening of gang tensions in the district and an increase in patrols by the USG. On Monday morning police stated that the circumstances of the killing were still being investigated, but said the RCIPS was following a direct line of enquiry and is requesting that anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting, or has any information. to contact West Bay Police Station.

People who think they have information which will help the police can call any police station, the RCIPS tip-line at 949-7777, Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 (TIPS) or 649 3057 to reach the incident room.

Police get this killer off the streets. Its been a long time coming, he should have been convicted a long time ago but he was left on the streets to continue his murderous rampage. Many have been hurt and killed because of and by this sick individual.

At this moment XX is probably trying to find away off of Cayman. Please dig every crease and crack of Cayman to find him and put him where he belongs.

He feels that he can continue to kill because he keeps getting away with it. This is the second person in logwood he has killed.Sadly its the same place he's lived most of his life. He has a lot to pay for. If I could prove these things I would be he first to help put him away.

I hear things like everyone else and I'm sure the majority of Logwoods knows who did this. Come on people are you going to let fear of this man stop you from doing the right thing. If someone isnt brave enough he is going to kill off the entire Logwoods at this rate. Maybe many might be happy to hear that but there is a lot of innocent children/people living there. Solly was one of them.

XX cant stand up to those he's in gang wars with, run like a dog with is tail between his legs  everytime but yet target those that dont have the ability to defend themselves. I just want 5 minutes in a room with this punk without any weapons,I will show you what to do with him.

    RIP Solomon & Irvin

    Justice will come.

Sounds like YOU know exactly who the shooter was. Come on, are YOU going to let him get away with it? If you are brave enough to be in a room with him, be brave enough to pick up the phone and turn him in, for Solomon and Irvin! The only one that can let him get away with it is the one who does nothing about it.

    • Anonymous says:

@08:59 you are exactly right, how the hell he got off the first one I still can’t understand and why the hell he’s doing down LW I don’t know he’s been a “proper fop” from day one and his mother is a poor example for motherhood and his pa can’t see past a beer / rum bottle.

Irvin nor soli was any hurt to anyone this idiot boy needs to be taken off the street.

      • Anonymous says:

Your comments are true I guess but the answer to your question why he doing down LW, the answer would be Irvin's daughter's dear..He might be what he is but dont put all the blame on him.If they except him there then it shouldnt be anyones buisness but theres..JUST SAYING

      • Anonymous says:

I guess I can agree the things your saying. But the answer to your question about how and why he get down LW.It's simple..IRVIN daughters dear…If the killer of Irvin daughter's can forgive him for there own father then it shouldnt matter to any of us, even thou I find it Pathetic to have someone around me who killed my father and knowing it but still choice to be with him…So if he that they dont mind, I dont see why we should..JUST SAYING

The cop in the photo looks like he is equipped for combat somewhere in the Middle East and not in West Bay.  My goodness this is not the kind of thing that we want to see here, it reminds me of that song "In the Foreign Press", they trying their best to stop our progress.  Caymanian youths wake up and stop the foolishness when you destroy your country where are you going to run to? If you cannot behave yourselves what choice do you leave those who will shoot and ask questions later, stop the foolishness.  Most of my friends were from West Bay when I went to school as a result I spent most of my time there and we got along witheach other just fine, we went to Ms. June Pizza Hut, Silver Sands Cafe, played football and acted like normal teenagers. What is happening now, have we stopped being Caymanian?  This behaviour is strange and foreign to us, we need to stop it now!

    • Anonymous says:

08.37, have you been to West Bay lately?

    • Anonymous says:

You are right.  The cop might be adequately equipped for the Middle East but needs more protection for West Bay.

This unfortunate young man did not have to die like that.  He had special needs and people took advantage of him, shame on those that did, but karma will come around.  RIP Sully you are now in a better place.

  4. 4Cayman says:

I think it's high time th RCIPS and politicians get control of this matter. First they were in denial gangs existed in cayman, then they open up a special unit which you never hear of strategies or public updates, etc…..the position where sticking your head in the sand mentality is not going to make this problem go away.

I don't know the intricacies of the case but as I read the comments below of a young man who had challenges in life was a good man. What if it was a random killing by an initiating new gang member? If so no one is safe or who is next?

These young men and ladies need mentors, guidance and support from all in our community and yes the parents need get involved too. Government need to stop assisting the dead beat parents too by way of government assisting.

This problem is affecting our way of life and is going to become an issue for attracting tourist and commerce to our shores.

I have a feeling we're all essentially talking to ourselves here.  We all hate crime and want justice, but the people we need to reach most are the people who would never be reading a news site's comment board like this.  The people we worry about most don't even own a computer, let alone understand the implications of their crime, violence and the lack of an education.  Haves and have-nots.  We're talking in a vacuum here and that's the problem.

Every crime spree has a season but regardless of that fact, when we get back to hiring Caribbean Police Officers – the decent ones who care about the Caribbean as a whole, we might see some results.  All the cops who gave a damn about Cayman, its youth and keeping this country safe and who knew how to talk to the young men and help them are all either retired = forced to or voluntarily to get away from Baines or replaced by old decrepid retired English police men who the mother country figured should come here to retire because they cannot afford the pension back in the motherland.  They are here on vacation and pushing the caribbean officers out of the force.  Look at how many Caymanian officers have lefr or if you talk to those who remain ask them how motivated they are?  I bet they need a new commissioner.  Of course they cannot say so publicly.

Now I am not blaming Baines for violence in Cayman but he got what he wanted.  A long term contract that keeps him here an OBE and a cushy paying job that does not require results from him.

Now about the crime.  Its not bad compared to other countries but its too bad for Cayman;s small population.  Its worse than it has been yet comparatively low compared to others.  So maybe that is the reason the Commissioner feels he is doing something.  WHen you use statistics of a country with a million or over 300,000 population then compare that to Cayman there is no way Cayman will look bad!   Yet, for our numbers if we were compared to similar population, we wold be very high in crime stats.

The community needs to stop hiding and start talking.  Having said that, if you tell the police what you know and they go to the persons and say Jane Doe said that you were seen doing such and such, all the more reason why people dont talk!  Fear is a crippling thing and so we all keep our mouths shut because of fear.

May God Bless these Cayman Islands!

It's time to start changing the way society feels about "snitching".  Start offering rewards and start treating tipsters as heroes. If we can change that, we can get these crooks off the street.

    • Anonyanmous says:

I prefer the old decrepid English officer than many of the aggressive, corrupt, arrogrant and ignorant officers who are now the majority in the RCIPS. In my opinion we should have only English, Caymanian and other officers that came from the traditional recruitment areas back in the 60s and 70s when the police officers in Cayman were excellent in every way and free from corruption and greed, a time where there was little crime.  I have no problem with Inspector Baines and wish that he will be here for a very long time.  The man is a hero in my opinion he did what no Caribbean police here has done so far without using firearms and acting like some Comando or Rambo. Thank you Inspector Baines and I wish you much success and hope that you remain here for a very long time.

He was NOT a gang banger.  Sully was a kind kid trying to find his way with a hard hand that was dealt to him.  He was taken advantage of by the gangs, by people who are cowards and feel superior when they take advantage of someone who has challenges.  Sully was forced to participate, forced to fit into a mold he didn't want.

Sully had grown up with challenges but accomished so much through Special Olympics.  He was trying so hard to become something other than a statistic.  So many have failed him and his family.  Social Services…. How do you feel?  Can you wash your hands now and cross this one off your list?  He is a statistic to you, to the police but to those who knew him, he was a good guy, an athlete, a competitor, a son, a brother, a friend. We love you Sully.

No disrespect taken.  Solomon had challenges, learning challenges and was not a mentally functioning 24 year old.  Almost like a 10 year old trying to fit into the life of an adult with bad influences taking advantage of his challenges.  I just wish he had a chance, was given a chance.

  13. Anonymous says:

The only uniformed person who was trying to help Solomon was a female officer from West Bay Station.  While everyone (males) were standing around looking on she was there with gloves on trying to do what she could. she stuck at it until the Paramedics showed up and even then still kept working.

Thanks for the help Joy.  You did your best.

  15. Anonyanmous says:

So sorry that another person had to die this way.  People far too many guns are on the street. The government need to enact stricter law in relation to guns and crimes.  Secure our borders the boats that carry in the drugs also bring in guns and ammo.  Whenever we find drug dealers in our waters we need to immediately burn the drugs destroy the guns, take off the engine and escort them out of our waters and give them a paddle.  Gun crimes are destroying this once beautiful and crime free island.

I'm curious WHY this annually escalates in the month of September?  I also agree that we need a better 1-800-TIPS program to turn in these thugs with guns and a gang task force.  Comm Baines, you have not been earning your paycheck and if you need help from Mother England to eradicate gangs and guns then please ask, but quickly as we are losing our streets.

Get these boys/girls together  (school, the streets, it does not matter where!) and start showing them pictures- Yes pictures- of the wounds created by the gun. Show them the entry and exit wounds, the blood, the guts, the holes made in the body, the body parts exposed and dripping outside the body. The people who have been paralyzed and what they go through to get dressed in the morning and at night to go to bed, to go the bathroom, to get into a wheelchair, tell them about their "sex life" after they are paralized.

They need to see it. RCIP,EMS, Hospital Staff, coroner…..bring it to them because to them, it is all a game, bring it true to life. Bring in the mother's who have lost children. Bring it all to life and even if they act tough and say nothing, it may just stop one from continuing in this dangerous and deadly game!

It’s the same handful of idiots that trying to impress other idiots in prison. So please come on down and in return you can see how idiots operate.

If you reading the news you will see they either are killing themselves or they killing each other.

Our hope here in Cayman is that the police will leave them alone together long enough so they can eradicate each other, but every so often one of the idiots commit a crime that they can be caught just sothey can get locked up and create enough problems to be sent to prison where they get there instructions and come back out again. Lots of coincidences happen here in the Islands where certain persons can be locked up and nothing happens and all of a sudden they get out and it starts all over again.

So please Mr. Visitor do not cancel. Just because we have a handful of idiots running around killing each other or too lazy to get a job and stealing alcohol to feed their babies that still in there balls (if they have any balls,) does not make the Islands a bad place to visit.

I must apologies also for those politicians that always condoning and saying crime is the result of un-employment. as you can imagine, decrease in business due to crime is the cause of un-employment, and since the handful of idiots have been made to think it is ok to deprive other persons of their live hood that somehow it is ok if they are considered un-employed. Not to forget that you have persons that get jobs and coincendiantly the establishments somehow gets broken into and or robbed. The idiots coincidentally even know exactly at what hour, at what locations the safes and exactly the time that the security will be in the bath rooms.

So Mr. Visitor, please come on down. Never you mind the few idiots, they do not trouble the tourist, these idiots are just dark minded (use any of the dark words to replace dark) and you get the mentality. It’s a dark mind mentality. The old people used to call it as it is. And we almost were able to celebrate, ohh I mean mourn the loss of our famous serial rapist, but again we have to thank the prison officers that responded fast enough, now that idiot might try to say his life is in jeopardy. So he might just disappear like the other one did. But ask any local and they can tell you the visitors are safe. Just avoid the western part of the Islands at nights for now while the eradication takes its course. Its only a handful and we know who they are.
