Clock ticking on daylight saving discussion
(CNS): The Department of Commerce and Investment is making a final appeal to the public to complete the government’s survey on the introduction of daylight saving time in the Cayman Islands. The on-line questionnaire will close at the end of this month and people are being urged to express their opinion on whether Cayman should adopt the practice of adjusting clocks one hour forward during the summer and back again in the fall in order to keep Cayman in time step with Miami and New York year-round. It is believed that by keeping in time with the US east coast there will be benefits for the cruise and overnight tourist industry, as well as the offshore financial services sector. The survey takes about three minutes to complete.

All the arguments about why DST was introduced miss the point. There are huge benefits to being in sync with the East Coast of the US and relatively consistent in time difference with Europe.
Whatever causes less congestion when a cruise ship is in works for me.
Native Caymanians are quite happy with the time that we've had since 1503 and it does not include day light savings time.
the first permenant settler was around 1661, the islands were uninhabited when Columbus arrived. And our current system of time recording with time zones was in 1884, please learn your own history

Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands in 1503 and named the 3 islands then, "Las Tortugas" because of all the turtles he saw swimming around our waters.
Please do not attempt to re-write our unique history, the islands certainly were NOT uninhabited.
Just because Wikipedia says so doesn't mean it is so. I was taught from a young age that the first settlors of these islands were the Arawak and Carib indians. I was taught this in Elementary School.

Why dont we just introduce an additional hour into the day? Let's make all our days 25 hours long…..to heck with everyone else, we are Cayman…we rule! Plop in an extra hour from November 1st, in between 6 and 7 at night….that way, it stays lighter in the evenings, it's still a bit light in the mornings, and we get longer in bed…this is a win-win-win.
At the same time can we add a day to September to bring it in lie with other months? I have always felt robbed that my monh only has 30 days when others get 31.
Ummm…so seem to be missing the fact that February only has 28 and April, June and November also have 30.
DST was actually started to save fuel during the World Wars is my understanding. More daylight for bombing I guess. It is interesting that some countries are now questioning the practise for various reasons.

No, it will start at 7:00. If we go to DST 7am will be 7am for everyone – even you. If you have to be somewhere at say, 9 don't turn up at 10 don't worry this won't happen until summer next year.
I haven't seen one good reason not to go for day light saving.

my thermostat comes on at 6am to 7 am every morning.
sun is only just up not very hot outside. The change wont make any difference.
in the evening it runs from 5pm till 10pm.
It is starting to cool down by 5 so ac doesn't have to work too hard to cool the place. Moving the clock back means it will start at what would be 4pm. Yes it will still run 5 hours but it will have to work harder.

There on't be anymre sunlight during the day, it is just that we will operate at different times.
Why don't we campaign for our own Cayman time zone. It can be in between the central and eastern time zones at about 47.5 years behind Greenwich Meantime.
We could also charge furriners to use it too.

I believe that Daylight saving is worthwhile – but not during the Summer months, the same as Europe and US. Part of the reason they started Daylight savings was because (in parts) they have long cold winters and short mild summers – whereas Cayman has hit Summers and mild (or at least less hot) winters. When do most of the tourists come to Cayman? Between December – April, and that is when Cayman should adopt Daylight Savings time
The summer monthsis when we need it – an extra hour of daylight during the summer would be super. We would return "fall back" to standard time in the winter months.
It's actually has to do with the amount of daylight, hence, it's name. Now if you want to tow Cayman into the Southern Hemisphere that could work….
Daylight saving is only for the smart. You won't find that here for at least ten more years.

I have a few business calls lost every year when Cayman does not change its time. That costs money. Telling everyone the clocks aren't changing is also a huge waste of time and communication capital.

It is a no brainer to switch to Eastern time. But any change is always opposed by the hard-core Caymunian posse. So nothing will be done – even no brainers are too much for those with no brains.

Disregarding the commercial aspect, we would have an extra hour of sunlight in the summer months, the reason the practice was created. Think of having an extra hour to "play outside" after finishing work. More sport, more time on the beach, more time in the garden with the kids. I'm for it.

the main reason for the implementation of DST originally was to make good use of daylight and save energy by decreasing the electricity consumption. Studies have shown that energy reduction was negligible even for those countries that have long winters.
While the concept of DST might be practical for other parts of the world is it really needed in the tropics? Cayman in particlar? where day and night are about the same length of time year round? Let Cayman leave well enough alone an remain as we are as far as this topic is concerned anyway.
You are missing the point. You are discussing DST in general. Cayman needs to be onone time zone without the confusuion of swittchimg every 6 months which is what happens now. Many businesses have to arrange meetings by phone or video comnference and it is very confusing when half of the year we are 5 hours behind the UK and half of the year it is 6. For the U.S. half of the year we are on Eastern and half of the year we are an hour behind (on Central). I get bored of trying to expalin the fact that becuase our clocks don't change we are not the same time difference all year around. It is so frustrating, I just can't believe this didn't hapen 50 years ago!

It is quite simple really.Cayman uses Eastern Standard Time which is always 5 hrs behind GMT or UTC.However if you still cannot figure this out (some businessman you are) simply turn your clock ahead or back whenever New York does and adjust your business hours accordingly.Of courseyou will still have a little problem keeping up with London and a few other places that adjust their clocks at a different time than New York.

I am all for an extra hour of day light in the evening – just think the sun won't go down until 8pm in the evenings! Save on your CUC light bill and be able to spend time outside doing exercise in the daylight.
What difference does this make? Some companies now already cater to the time. If they choose to open earlier to cater to the tourists or to the time of the business hours in the countries which they conduct business, then a company can do so. That would be a policy of the business. What difference does it make? Government does not have to dictate everything. Or do we want that?

There is one major flaw with the survey;it is not limited to Cayman voters or even Cayman residents.Therefore it appears that anyone with access to a computer can take part in this survey.That means that we could find that the decision on DST or no DST could be made by persons with absolutely no connection to the islands.Wrong ,plain wrong.
I'm a Caymanian living in England and those living overseas are perfect people to comment because they know what actually happens when you observe DST. I completed the survey and did my NO vote with reasons to support. There is no reason for a country in the tropics to be observing DST as all it will succeed to do is throw off your sleep cycle.

Really!!!??? Do we not have other matters of weighted importance to deal with in Cayman? How much business/money is being lost because of a 1hr difference with New York. We are at time differences with other major cities, Hong Kong, London, Dubai, etc. and so is other places in the world. Do what they do in other places; have shifts for those timeframes. Besides with $1 billion unaccounted for in Government Daylight Savings Time should not even be nowhere in eyesight of matters to be dealt with.

I guess you must be a product of the Cayman public education system. There is no extra daylight to cause cancer just because you change a clock. There is the same amount of daylight as before, just at a different time. Besides, this is a non-issue if you're smart as use sunblock (along with DEET mosquito repellant to avoid dengue and chikungunya).

Nothing wrong with the Cayman pubic education system. As I went through it I can speak from experience, but I don't believe that a sense of humour escapes any education system. Sadly, if you are a product of private education system then your parents wasted a whole lot of money on tuition.
This should have been done years ago, The numerous benefits far outweigh any perveived negatives. let's just do it so that we can be on EST all year around – the sooner the better.
Ummmm…I think the point is that we are already on EST all year round. What they are proposing is that we should go on EDT along with the east coast of the U.S.

How about catering to our tourists who complain the sun goes down at 6PM? Where's the sunny vacation when it ends before 7:00PM every night? THIS is WHAT we SELL – "Sunshine!"
How about our Financial Industry? Our #1 competitor (Bermuda) is 2 hours ahead of us and gets an extra 2 hours of busines a day while we try to compete….Bahamas, Barbados, and Bermuda are all laughing at us with our disatvantage.

If tourists are complaining that the sun is setting before 7pm ,then I suggest that they turn their watches ahead to the time they want the sun to set.In other words if they want sunset to be at 8pm and it is happening at 6pm turn their watches ahead by 2 hrs ,or if they want it to set at 10pm ,turn their watches ahead by 4hrs.Guarenteed to work,like clockwork. You also lament the fact that Bermuda is 2 hrs ahead of Cayman.Then why don't you push for Cayman to adopt Britsh Time,incoluding the use of British Summer Time ,that way Cayman will be 3 or 4 hours ahead of Bermuda .
The tourists are on ships time. Tourists time for aerial depends on when the ship is scheduled to arrive. Late or early a change in time on our part won't give them extra sun if they arrival at the same time according to the ships normal schedule. If they want more sun and more time, then the ship needs to arrive earlier.
If the businesses feel that they need longer hours to compete then they should require the employees to either work overtime or tell them to start at a later hour in the morning or have two (or more) sets of employees in shifts.

Fight obesity- same comment above. I think this gives an extra hour to eat and go drinking rather than an extra hour to go exercise. If people are really serious about exercise they would make the time for it. Not have to wait on a 'magical' creation of 'time'.
Airline schedulers – plan your flights in advance and adjust your flights as necessary. Quite simple really. I've been to the airport and I've seen the nonsense. The mess is due to an imminent need for a new airport not just an influx of flights due to the time difference. Saturdays at the airport is always packed.

The entire Finance industry is not on NY time. There are many other companies in Cayman that conduct business in Brazil, Dubai, London, all parts of Canada, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Ireland, Argentina, Switzerland, Luxembourg etc. So should we adjust our time for them too? A bit silly to adjust for that reason. If your workers need to communicate with your colleagues in a completely different time zone, then shift work or working on graveshift or different hours than 9-5 maybe best for your company.
Obviously the correct, thoughful, and educated thing to do would be adopt DST.
However, it will never happen because someone would actually have to make a decision.

The clock is ticking on this government if they want to push people's favourite television shows back by an hour 8 months of the year and not give us an extra day to get our shopping done. This is about the least "progressive" anything I've ever seen.
