Arrests made in face of GT house demolition
(CNS) Updated: Demolition began at a property on Shedden Road Wednesday, where several tenants had continued to occupy the homes despite an eviction notice and their power and water supply being cut. Among the tenants that dispute the owner’s right to take repossession of the property are the five children of Anna Evans, a landfill worker who disappeared without trace in January 2011. Police closed the road temporarily as the heavy equipment operators moved in and confirmed four people were arrested at the site for damage to property and criminal damage but they were all bailed. However, it is not clear what has happened to all of the tenants though the Evans' children were said to have been moved to Bodden Town.
The property belongs to landowner Kent Rankin but there has been a long stand-off over a legal dispute.
The Evans family, including her five children, continued to live at the property after the eviction notice and it was still occupied on Tuesday as efforts to assist the family to relocate appear to have failed. Court bailiffs padlocked the apartments on the property on 15 October but several tenants had refused to leave, despite the lack of utilities and the imminent arrival of the bulldozers.

These children are getting alot of exposure because of what happened to their mother – BUT, believe me there are ALOT of children in Cayman in WORST circumstances!!! From constant exposure to sexualisation, to drugs, guns, alcohol, yep, all in the Christian isles of Cayman. There is so much dirt under this country's carpet that it couldn't be wiped clean if every janitorial company on the island collaborated!!!
Going forward let this be a lesson to all those who want to control people's property at the end of the day the laws of the land will prevail, thank God this country is still ruled by the UK and not some Hon for life dictator.
No more illegal late night sessions in the rear of this property.
This is a plot for them to seek financial assistanc ffrom government by using “Anna’s 5“
children as an excuse. They were living on the property for7years after being paid. That was being more than generous. Anna only has 3 young children now as the first two are of age and are on their own. It is sad for the younger ones but the guardians of the younger ones should have asked mr Rankine to build them a big enough home that would equate to what he paid them in checks so that they can have a place to stay. Rather they took the money; bought a fleet of brand new cars and suv’s back then and remained on Mr. Rankine’s property for 7 years. Now we the public will be tax for the sham of taking care of anna’s children. Has anyone seen the appearance of the children’s care taker let alone the condition of the children. Government should find a mature stable care taker for those three younger children; place them in a home with this responsible person that will care forthem nurture them an teach them how to be responsible and not going to government every time they are in a jam and need hand outs. Use anna pension and life insurance to take care of her kids ONLY and dont let their current care taker have any control over it at all.
The guardians of all the children should all be arrested for endangerment of these children. This situation is ridiculous and the adults are reckless and irresponsible and have been so for many years. How many years have they lived in those houses and when we as working people drive by they are all hanging out drinking gambling and having a wonderful time. These people are crying now but they have wasted many years of there life and taught their children to do the same thing. They have lead careless lives and now it is societies burden to care for these able bodied people and this includes Anna's adult age children. If you are not in school you should be working and many people do both. Anna worked and took care of her children why isnt this lesson being passed on and if the government is liable take them to court and dont stay there complaining and begging. This is what is wrong with the Caymanian people today we have lost our pride and sense of worth all we do is wait and cry for handouts. FYI I am Caymanian before we start an expat war. In addition, as per a you tube video posted this land was sold and these people received payment hence the courts judgement. Come on people stop the ignorant behaviour and teach the children to work hard and be smart about their lives and choices.
For your information, maybe you should get your facts together before you could make an assumption or judgment…
I don't give a XXX who you is or what you do and you don't know my family, you only see what was happening on the surface, which is the drinking and the gambling but you don't know what the XXXX was going on underneath when those children found it hard to wake up in the morning and go to school or find a damn job..
You're only making a judgment from what you have seen the adults do or how they behave but you don't know what the kids or should I say, young adults have been doing.
So next time you want to pass an assumption or judgment you should XXXXXXX find out the correct information.
You took the words from my mouth.
Well said…Thank you.
Incredible that in all of this time and with all of the reporting, NO mention of these children's father or fathers.
Are our Local men too busy chasing enjoyment to show any responsibility for the children they fathered..? It taks more than just the baby mama to raise a child.
Lesson 1 – How Caymanians treat their fellow Caymanians, smh.
Is that why RCIPS decided to close Shedden Rd at 5:15pm last night and divert all the traffic leaving George Town down Dr Roy's Dr back into the centre of town? If so perhaps they could have done it an hour earlier instead of when everyone was trying to get home!
They were really showing their kids a good example by sitting out there al not doing anything, it was a real eye sore to the area with them sitting down outside acting if they had nothing to d with their yard looking a mess and giving harsh looks to passing by as if they owed them something
I wish the adults weren't so ignorant and stubborn. They should be thinking about what's best for all the children who lived there. The land was sold, simple, doesn't if you didnt cash the cheque or not every person that lived there or was apart of the family there ALL got money from the profits of selling the land. I repeat the land was SOLD. Had they felt there was any deceit in the signing and selling of the property they should have made this much of a stink YEARS ago. I can only imagine how it felt to see your home demolished and the memories with it but what did you really expect to happen?
HOw ignorant can you be…this court order was issued a while back, if they had any claims to the land, then back to court they should have gone. Where it is sad what happen to Ms Evans, some of her children are grown and can get jobs….typical huh???blame everyone else for your mistakes…what kind of example are the parents setting for the younger children? Police are there, demolition crews…
This is the best for the children that live there. For years, it was a horrible environment for the children, to have to live directly on Shedden Road with the seedy bars across the street and constant disorganized parties and hoards of drunken male thugs.
They will hopefully move to a better environment that will give the kids a fighting chance for their future. .
Long time coming. Only the ignorance of the parents to blame for the hardships placed on the children.
Are you refering to the mother who disappeared, how long ago, whilst on the job at Government Dump? Is that the Parents you are referring to?
I'm just curious but can't help wondering if the multi-millionaire owner and developer of this property has offered any assistance to this family in light of their tragic and unfortunate circumstances – such as a financial donation or assistance with alternate housing at one of his many housing developments. Perhaps he has or maybe not. Would be interesting if he or his representatives have any comment on that matter.
Why should he offer them anything? He bought the land it wasnt stolen. These people wasted the proceeds of the sale and are plain greedy.
They just using those children to hide all of their dirt like a lot of the families that expect government to support their children after they spend their money on booze, drugs and numbers. Not saying that is what this family spent the money on but instead of buying cars and buckets of KFC, these people should have bought land or a house with the money that they were paid for the land that they are occuping.
All like one had a liquor business going on, it was his income …
The house was gross, a breeding ground for crime and failure.
Many years I have passed this home and allways thought it was a daycare for neglected children. The children exposed to life around the property will grow up to be failures upon society because there idea of normal would be that of a drug slum.
Hopefully all of them have been relocated tonormal property in nice developments. Perhaps then all of those children will have a chance at a good clean life.
It is a shame that it had to come to this your leaders with their shiney new cars should of been ashamed that this mess was not addressed years ago. But perhaps they dont know better because they themselves are dirty creatures.
As the children's mother went missing on governments clock, and as the surveillance cameras were not working at the time… had they been working there may not have been any mystery…perhaps government should give the children’s custodian one of the low income houses being built. If our government could house the many able body persons in the original low income housing schemes such as Apple Blossom Estate in West Bay (I think that it the correct name) many of whom have not paid a single dollar since 2004 they should be able to do something for this family. Having said this I do not support the mentality of living for free on the governments expense but to me this is an exceptional case.
wth…uhhh. The children endured this, due to negligent parental figures.
You know, using "children" to move agenda's or drum up sympathy.
When it comes down to that, or you resort to those tactices, that is when you must realise and know you have lost the fight.
pfft. "the dhildren, the children"
all this has taught these children is, 1. fight for any cause, even if it's illegal or not right. 2. You have taught them to disrepsect the law. 3. You have taught them, that making your responsibiltiy, someone else's responsibility, and using an excuse.for your actions, justfies everything. 4. shield your problems with children and at least you will get some siympathy for doing wrong.
Seriously. They didnt' own the land. They were squattters. It's as simple as that. Take out the "children defense" and it is, what it is. Illegal.
This is really sad the owner of the property had to endure so much
Laws exist for a reason, or are Caymanians now above the law, in ignoring it?
And as usual the police demonstrated their incompetence with traffic control, by closing the road at a senseless point causing unnecessary traffic snarl, by looping traffic back to town instead of closing Shedden road from Elizabethan square.
This is really sad those poor children having to endure so much.
This is really sad. Has anyone tryed to help this family understand the lost of their mother life ? Where is the C I govererment in all this mess ? Do they have any semiphty and responibilty to the children of the lost mother on her C I Govererment Job . I understand that there is a legal dispute over the property they were in . Did the family have any legal aide in this property dispute hearing ? Or was this a 2 sided hearing and verdict over the property .
I'm guessing the Government has no semiphty for these children.
I thought the children were moved to Bodden Town?
Yep, a result of uncontrolled capitalism.
The american way.
You're an idiott
What is sad is that innocent children are being used as a scape-goat for their own family members' ignorant behaviour and selfish ways.
Question 1: How much money did they receive for the purchase of land?
Question 2: Why did they refuse to find alternative living arrangements when they had been given 2 years to re-locate? (nice of the owner to have given them 48 months to move instead of 24 HOURS!)
Conclusion: Ignorance breeds ignorance. What have they tought the children by displaying this type of on-going behaviour for the last 2 years and after having lost their mother.?
Children need stability and structure, this should have been the family members priority, not to blame Government and others for their own laziness and ignorance!
