Truck troubles reduce rubbish collection
(CNS): The twice weekly garbage collection from residential premises on Grand Cayman is being reduced to one a week as a result of mechanical problems with the department of environmental health’s trucks. Officials said both residential and commercial garbage collection services have been affected due to the on-going problems and stated that commercial customers who normally see collection on a more frequent basis will also experience delays in the services. The Department of Vehicle and Equipment Services (DVES) is reportedly working to have the trucks back in operation but it is not clear what the difficulties are or if the problems are down to government cuts.
The DEoH apologized to customers and emphasised that efforts were being made to get back to normal and improve the collection services. Officials confirmed that the Sister Islands collection services are unaffected and operating as normal.

Given a choice between funding garbage collection and funding Mac's travel budget, I would vote for funding garbage collection.
Something needs to give! We want to charge top dollar for someone to come on a vacation to Cayman, yet the garbage piles up and the streets and beaches are littered.
I seriously hope that whoever is going to be the next minister in charge of DEH will see to it that the dept is well funded AND will be run effectively and effeciently!

Maybe we should have used the 200k that the honorable delegation probably wasted on their latest trip to uk to fix the truck issue?
Imagine how many brand new trucks mckeiva could have bought from the Chinese with the 1m he blew to fly the friendly skies.
Fine by me, we have a good storage area for our trash and to be honest I'd rather that than me and my kids being woken by loud dump trucks and reversing beeps (directly outside our house) at 4 in the morning more than once a week – once is enough!
I still have my Christmas clean up pile sitting on a now big patch of dead grass. Man-up and tell us the real reason!!!! Sheesh!
This back log of trash happens very often. Have they not learned anything yet?
so why doesn't government spend $$$ where it's actually NEEDED! This is just ridicuous we can spend $350K on travel, but can't spend it for new trucks!! something is definitely wrong here.
The D.E.H has been saying they have truck trouble since December. During the bulk waste pick up that was scheduled back in December, truck troubles were the reason some roadside waste deposits were not picked up.That waste still sits by the side of streets. Repeated phone calls to the department reveal that truck trouble is to blame, but after repeated promises of a pick-up, nothing has been done.
Now let's just imagine that those trucks had to travel more than double the distance with the majority of the garbage – then how frequently would the trash be picked up?
