Drunken US honeymooner fined $500
(CNS): A 33-year-old American national was fined $500 today in the Cayman Islands Summary Court this morning after a drunken fight with his new wife aboard a Delta aircraft on Sunday night (9 March). The flight, which was on its way from Atlanta, Georgia, to Costa Rica, where the couple were planning a second honeymoon, was diverted here to Grand Cayman as a result of the unruly behaviour of Michael Scott Foret, who was arrested by the RCIPS when the plane landed at Owen Roberts International Airport. The drunken errant husband left his wife on board and was forced to sober up alone and spouseless in the George Town lock-up, where he spent both Sunday and Monday nights before being charged.
The US citizen was formally charged with two offences under the Air Navigation order of 2001 and taken before Magistrate Valdis Foldats on Tuesday morning. Foret, who was represented by local attorney Ben Tonner, pleaded guilty to being drunk in an aircraft and acting in a disruptive manner before he was released to catch the first flight back to the United States where he was planning to try to get to Costa Rica to be reunited with his wife.

Does not bode well for the Golden Anniversary.
WHY THE HELL was this plane diverted to Cayman??
US airline
US citizen drunk
Departed from Atlanta, USA
On route to Costa Rica
WTH??
So is the airline going to pay Cayman Government for the time incurred from the airport personnel, the RCIPS, cost of keeing this man in jail for 2 days, time for the magistrate and court personnel as well as the prosecuter?
I really just do not see why they could not restrain the man until they made it to Costa Rica or back to Atlanta. Why did Cayman have to pick up all of the above mentioned costs?
I remember seeing an article on CNN perhaps recently about na unruly passenger I believe coming from Iceland? and they restrained him with plastic handcuff and even DUCT tape until they reached their destination, when he was taken into custody by the authorities.
What a damn joke!!!!!!!!!
plane diverted here because we are lawless where the worst crimes are concerned.
the worst policing the most insecure crime scenes and the softest judiciary on hineous crimes so why not divert to the Cayman Islands?
its the best placein the world to hide money and to escape serious penalty for crimes worthy of the firing squad, electric chair, lifetime sentence or just simply a haven for the worst criminals as we have idiots handling our legal business most of the time.
Has anyone ever told you that you're slightly over the top? Have you ever found yourself doing things that don't make any sense? Have you ever used capital letters when ranting over something that's not all that important? Have you ever used multiple exclamation marks to make a point? Have you ever acted like a complete donkey's derriere but somehow still think you're totally cool? If you answered yes to any of these questions, take a chill pill and call the "mental" doctor (psychiatrist) tomorrow – seriously…
Calm down, friend. It was just a bit of a silly post, okay? Nothing to get excited/indignant over, really.
If the pilot was concerned enough to deviate from his scheduled route the punishment should be greater. $500 and two nights in the drunk tank does not seem like a strong deterrent.
CJ Smellie, push for an increase in these fines and you will be able to afford a new court house!
My question is – Did he 'consumate' the marriage alone in the Police Lockup?
Firstly if he boarded the flight with an obvious intoxication he should not have been allowed to do so. Second, if he became intoxicated while in flight then the airline should also be fined. Different people react differently to drunkeness, some mello and some violently. To provoke what could result in violent behavior should be against airline policy. A limit of the number of alcoholic beverages in a given period of time needs to be instated. An enroute aircraft is not the place to have any kinds of brawling. It's not like the bouncer can just kick you out.
She still got to celebrate the 2nd honeymoon in Costa Rica, hopefully meet a nicer bloke down there…….
Thats it? Only $500 for being the cause of a major flight from a major airline to be diverted? Not to mention the cost in terms of fuel, time, and resources that were wasted on this man? Just absolutely ridiculous.
I'm all for having a few drinks and feeling happy, especially when you're heading out with your spouse… but come on, this is ridiculous. There are traffic tickets more than $500. People go to jail for less than this kind of commotion. These sanctions need to be more strict, or what is the point in even having them?
He should have been returned to the US under guard and turned over to Federal Authorities there. I believe the US would have been much harder on him. If I was one of the passengers on the delayed flight I would be very upset and would have expected a more severe sentence. He certainly deserves a harsher punishment. P.S. I am an American citizen.
and the moral of the story…..dont get married!!
Or "Don't drink and fly."
Fine $500. Extra flight $500. Divorce Lawyer $50,000. Settlement with soon to be ex wife $500,000. All for too many $6 drinks…
All in all: Priceless!!
I suppose there is some sort of agreement between countries about this sort of thing that we are required to adhere to. I really don't know. But… Landing crew, airport security, police presence, 2 days room and board, a judge a clerk a lawyer and the rest. Delta spilling out the garbage cost us a heck of a lot more to tidy up than $500.
I give the marriage six months max.
The arrest, detention of the perpetrator, legal work and court proceedings surely cost Caymanian tax payers more than $500. It appears that it's time to review these fines and increase them so that we are not left "out of pocket" after these types of incidents.
USA! USA! USA!
