Detention centre beefs up security
(CNS): Following the escape this morning of thirty Cuban migrants from the immigration detention centre in Fairbanks, George Town the Ministry of Home Affairs said Friday evening that it has enhanced the security. All of the migrants that escaped have now been rounded up and officials said that calm has now been restored following the incident in which rocks were thrown at security guards and their dogs. There are presently 30 Cuban migrants at centre who were disgruntled over the length of time that it has taken for them to be processed to return to Cuba. The men had reportedly jumped over the fence in the sixth break out so far this year.
“All individuals have been recaptured,” the ministry stated in a release Friday evening once the migrants had all returned. “Meanwhile to ensure public safety, Immigration authorities, in collaboration with the Police and Prison Services, will work to supplement the efforts of the private company which is responsible for security at the IDC.”
Yasmany Gonzalez Rodriguez, who escaped in March and who officials believe is being protected locally is the only remaining migrant not to have been rounded up.

Has a security guard ever prevented a criminal act, social disorder, or breach of the peace while on duty? They seem to be the biggest waste of money insofar as a totally false sense of security.
In other words, "how do we prove a negative". Hmmmmmm. Yes, I've heard that one before… Moving on…
It is not about proving a negative. We have seen many stories about crimes being foiled by various including our heroes Powell and Azan ("not today, bobo") and the Commissioner Baines. The point is whether there have been any such stories about security guards. Actually there was one – involving both the security guard and Comm. Baines re a robbery at Kirk Freeport.
If Cuba is such a shithole that people have to try and escape, then I would suggest that they approach the same people in the United Nations that are ramming all these HR laws down our throats.
If the United Nations is really what it purports to be, a resolution would be passed and they would have boots on the ground in a flash.
Unfortunately, the United Nations is only "united" when it suits them. It won't be long before they tell us that we have to provide housing and jobs for these fugitives.
Sitting in our ivory towers and solutions coming as easy as tapping away on our keyboards, I can assure you that the first time a serious offence by one of these "asylum seekers" is committed the rules will change.
Cayman politicians do not have any authority to pass legislation that goes beyond helping the iguanas, turtles and building monuments.
Every serious law that is passed in Cayman is "crafted" at the highest levels and that is the true position, if you know what I mean? Wink, wink.
Arm them with tasers & stun guns etc!
When these people stop acting as refugees and escape, and in that process commit another crime (assulting the security officer with a rock) then they should be regarded as criminals. We already have to house and feed them, so there should be no problem doing so in Northward.
I am sure we have some low risk inmates at Northward whose space there can be swapped with these Cuban criminals. These low risk inmates will appreciate the country style living at Fairbanks. This could also be used as an incentive for other inmates to become "model prisoners" and thereby move to this facility prior to being released. (Charity begins at home.)
The immigration in Cayman needs to take a course in Cuba and see how it is done. The things that Cubans ndo here, they do not do in Cuba.
Immgration department baby sits them while t Cayman Island goverment waste money and aeroplane fuel taking them back
They are very ungrateful, so insteAd of bringing them ashore to be a menace, let them continue on their journey and we wouldn't have to spend taxpayers money on them, we can spend it on our very own. I am sure it will be more appreciated.
Now that is what I call "piss pot poor" security. I'll be you a Caymanian entering Cuba illegally wouldn't escape so easily.
Now there is an investigation into all the break outs of the detention centre….who is government protecting? Why is the security company still there who is supposively guarding these people and letting them out???? Installing CCTV, now that is a no brainer, which company is gonna supply this, the same one letting the cubans escape??? WIN WIN SITUATION ISN"T IT?????
I am tired of the cubans running across my yard. Security guards, armed police, dogs, cubans, etc… It is a complete joke. I don't know what the CIG government is paying for security per month (or to whom) but it would be interesting to find out. Both get a zero score so far. I think one big officer with a scowl and a six foot stick would be much more effective. Ridiculous.
