Pistol and ski mask recovered, two arrested

| 08/09/2011

(CNS): Police officers have recovered a loaded semi-automatic pistol, a ski mask, gloves and camouflage clothing and arrested a man and a woman following a police operation in the Prospect area. The RCIPS have reported that at around 11:30am today (Thursday 8 September) the RCIPS Air Operations and K-9 Units, together with the Uniform Support Group and Drugs and Serious Crime Task Force, mounted a targeted operation on a house in the Marina Drive area of Prospect. During that operation a loaded .45 semi-automatic pistol was recovered along with a ski mask, gloves and camouflage clothing. The man and the woman were arrested at the location on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm. They remain in police custody while enquiries areongoing.

"This was a well-planned and executed operation involving specialist resources of the RCIPS,” said Superintendent Kurt Walton.” It is one of many operations we have and will continue to carry out as a direct response to the gun related crime which is currently blighting Grand Cayman. The public can expect to see many more of these high profile operations take place during the coming weeks.

“We also warned earlier this week that the amnesty window is now closed. Anyone who is in possession of unlicensed or illegal weapons can expect that they will be in our sights and our aim is to take them and the deadly weapons they hold off the streets.”

Anyone with information about gun crime in the Cayman Islands should contact their local police station, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or the confidential Crime stoppers number 800-8477 (TIPS).

  2. Anon says:

Not just marina drive but orange drive, birch drive and mahogany way are also areas where the rcip can gain quick success in the war against crime….because that is what it is right now.

  3. Anonymous says:

Good work RCIPS. Now let's see a conviction!

  4. Anonymous says:

it's pretty obvious that some of the trouble makers come on here and thumbs down everything…..go out a play children….enjoy this life instead of being negative…..

  5. Anonymous says:

Please RCIPS run ballistics tests on this gun to determine what crimes – and possibly murders – it has been used in. Guns are being loaned and re-used by the local criminal element. Please – run the tests.

  6. Anonymous says:

If you raid all the houses on Marina Drive, you will problem get a lot more firearms and drugs…

    🙂

  7. Local Commonsense says:

Soon the police will be able to raid a lot more homes and recover guns, 'cause at the rate crime continues to escalate, with car jackings, shootings, robberies, attempted murders etc. more homeowners are going to take drastic measures to ensure the safety of their families and properties. Just wait! Besides… watch if they don't "snock" this one up before during or after the investigation XXX!! Ahhh boy…

OK LET SEE WHAT HAPPENS AS A CITIZEN I WILL DO MY PART DEAR CNS OR WHOEVER THAT CARES
SEVERAL days ago I in the prospect area and I saw something that caught my eye because it was a fairly new looking "WHITE GLOVE" on the side of the road I found it interesting because i had recently (at the time /day ) read about a robbery involving Casanova where the robbers used WHITE GLOVES.

I thought to myself UH WHAT ARE THE CHANCES and brushed it off BUT i have come to the decision to share it on CNS and see what the response will be.

The WHITE GLOVE was in the same spot on Wednesday 7th September and is located shortly after the corner of BIRCH AVE and ALMOND AVE in prospect.

SO it could be nothing… BUT LIKE I SAID i just wanted to share…

    • Anonymous says:

why aren't you sharing this with the police?  Their number is 949 4222.  Call them, please

  9. Frank says:

Well done! Good work i must say! But i must say how come they're only being arrested on suspicion of an unlicensed firearm and not also on suspicion of armed robbery? I mean come on. Its hardly like they are playing Army in the bush with the camo and ski masks. Also are any bullistics being done to see whether this gun has been used in any previous robberies? Name and shame these ppl.

    • Anonymous says:

You only need one offence to arrest them for!  Then take it form there

    • Anonymous says:

And which robbery in particular do u expect them to be arrested for smarty pants? The police need evidence to link them to that crime before they can do that, for now it's just possession.

  10. Anonymous says:

Well done now lets see if thecharges will stick or dorp off like the many others.

  11. Anonymous says:

Fanatastic news!  great job.  Now let's match these items to a crime  and please please don't contaminate this evidence – we sorely need convictions!

By the way were either of them 5'3"?  That would solve 3 or 4 crimes!

  12. Anonymous says:

    Finally, some good news.

  13. Anonymous says:

Hmmmm  only a few comments here… amazing.  If it was some bad new about the police you won't hear the end of it. Well done, RCIP

    • Anonymous says:

Because people on this blog generally like to moan and not give praise!

    • South Sounder says:

Well don RCIP, I'm proud of you, but please do not "fluf" the forensics and supporting evidence…this appears to be the major stumbling block with most prosecutions these days.

      "No news is good news"

This is the way things should be going

    • Anonymous says:

There would be more comments if the police could/would be able to annouce the capture of the bolted criminal, who ran out of the Police Station sometime ago and left the island.  All you can here from them is that they know where he is.  How many officers if any was fired for that?

CNS:  I hope you will post this, because I was at the Police meeting when the questions was asked about the absconder and listened to the reply.

  14. Right on Target says:

Thank you Sup. Kurt, and the team ajob well done.  This is the kind of action we want to hear.  Get Radical with these crime spree nusiance wanting to terrorize people.  keep them pn the run, be tough and agressive in your operations.  And for the sake of the people, please make this one stick.  Because we are tired ofhearing cases getting thrown out of court.  Kurt one thing I can say about you, when you take a case to court, there is no getting away.  It is high time the Police become Radical with these punks.

  15. Anonymous says:

yeah yeah………..great work more of the same how great we are at crime fighting. Let us see a conviction and multiply this by 50 and then we can throw a parade. No high fives and pats on the back just yet. This looks like a knee jerk reaction to the egg that is in thier face of late. Also it would be prudent to know how much this show cost the Island to take down two people.

    • Get a grip says:

19:45  Get a grip on yourself, these guys have done a great job, why cant you givee them a thumbs up.  The police have been working had.  But rember they cannot perform miracles.  Give due where it is needed.  Thanks RCIP a job well done, and like the writer says, Its time to get agressive and radical, even if you have to form a Radication Squad amongst you.

    • Hear Hear!!! says:

I'm not sure if the cost is a concern.  I LIKE that the helicopter was used (in case there was a foot chase) and using the dogs….well done!

The "show" to bust two teens smoking ganga at Rum Point bugged me, but this is WEAPONS and I say bring on the $$$ task force if it is needed.

Keep the pressure on.  Thanks RCIP.

  16. Anonymous says:

THANK YOU RCIPS, Excellent Job, Congrats, Well Done.  Keep the pressure on, don't stop now go all the way, if it means searching each and every one of the homes, vehicles and person of these two suspects then please do it.  I will refrain from saying much more because we the people of the Cayman Islands need to let you do your job and let you do your investigations without compromise.  We are behind you 100% , excellent job, keep it up.

  17. Anonymous says:

In the interests of efficiency, can’t we just skip to the part where the charges are dismissed for lack of evidence, they are release unconditionally, and the CIG writes them a big check to settle their damages claim? Why pretend to go through the suspense when we’re read the end of the story already?

  18. Dred says:

'Clapping of Hands" – Congrats…..Job Well done…..NOW PLEASE FOR GOD'S SAKE MAKE THE CHARGES STICK!!!!! PLEASE!!!!

WE NEED A MESSAGE SENT TO WOULD BE CRMINALS. SEND THEM AWAY FOR A DAY LONGER THAN FOREVER

    • Anonymous says:

… And if their home was used to conceal the weapon, sell it as property used to commit an offense and start victim’s fund with the money.

      • Dred says:

And if it was determined that other had knowledge of the crime put them in prison for harbouring a crminal and/or witholding evidence to a crime or for assisting in the criminal act. Hell anything you can think of. Just make sure it is known that not only are criminals not safe but the ones that harbour them and that are party by knowledge.

  19. Anonymous says:

Well done RCIPS.  Keep  the pressure on!

  20. Anonymous says:

Excellent stuff, hope now the evidence gathering and presentation will hold up in court.

  21. Anony Mous says:

Good recovery, but I am just waiting to see if these people will be walking freeing a short while for some reason or another or with an out side chance of this case going to court and a conviction gained if they will only get let's say eight (8) months jail time. This has being the trend because we are such a humane, loving and caring set of islanders, that we would never put harm in our young people's future by sending them to prison for any long time or any prison time at all, that would be criminalizing our young ones.

  22. Anonymous says:

Yayyyyyyy!!!!!  I am so happy to hear this!!!!!!  Well done RCIP!!!!  Now lets wait and see which judge they get and what their punishment will be …….Hopefully punished to the full extent of the law.  The RCIP, Judiciary, Governor, Government (macdictator) and all the people of Cayman need to take a ZERO TOLERANCE stance on all these criminals to try to stamp out crime here NOW.  Keep up the good work RCIP….If you run out of prison space give me some chain and I will babysit them for you somewhere.

Why cant Walton or Bodden be commissioner?

    • Anonymous says:

      17;20

I said this just a few days ago. Ennis Walton, Bodden or Seales are good officers who are capable of doing the job. The problem is the have UK Officers who wont do what they should unless you call for their Jobs. Notice when you call for the Chief of firearms to be removed and they suddenly get a firearm! This is indicative of his performance so here goes; I think the firearms chief should still be removed from office. (Hopefully he will have another arrest now)

There are dozens of officers who have left and would come back immediately if Beans is removed and a Local officer appointed ComPol.

Despite all of that, Good Job to all involved; USG keep your heads up change is coming soon.

      SOL

    • Bodden Town Supporter says:

Nothing happens before time, but to tell you the truth I would love to see either  of them make that position.  They are good guys, and fair guys too.  They treat people with respect, can do their job well, and when it comes time to do what they have to do they do it with a smile and don,t bat an eyelash.  Good guys.

    • Anonymous says:

Bodden? Bodden? Are you completely insane? As for this operation, what massive overkill. A complete over allocation of resources/assets. Air Ops? Seriously? That just implies a lack of confidence in all the other units. What a joke. One weapon? Maybe an intelligence based operation with the house and subjects taken seperately would have been more appropriate. The RCIP continues to lurch towards the rocks with Dave 'rudderless' baines at the helm. Shocking.

  24. Anonymous says:

Excellent…. Now get a conviction.  Don't mess this one up too.

  25. Anonymous says:

Gee, I wonder what the 3 items have in common? Let's see…they are skiers, gloves for the garden and everyone has a right to protect themselves so I guess you better let them go.

  26. Anonymous says:

    Good work!

  27. Anonymous says:

Very Well Done RCIPS. A big THANK YOU goes out to you. Please keep up the good work, and many congratulations!
