Three surprises in West Bay

| 25/03/2009

(CNS): UPDATE: 3:15 pm. Previously undeclared candidates for West Bay, Henry Orman Morgan, Dora Ebanks and Woody DaCosta, were nominated today to run for the General Elections set for 20 May 2009. The Election’s Office this morning said it anticipated around 40 people or so would declare themselves for election. However, as of 3:00 pm this afternoon the opportunity for nominations closed. Keep checking CNSfor updates. (Left: Maxine Moore in the Sister Islands)

Sandra Catron, the first candidate to declare in Bodden Town who is embarking on her second attempt, told CNS that this time it feels so right.Ten candidates have now been nominated for the district: the three PPM incumbants – Anthony Eden, Charles Clifford and Osbourne Bodden; two UDP candidtes – Mark Scotland and Dwayne Seymour; and five independents – Sandra Catron, Theresa Pitcairn-Lewis, Gilbert McLean, Justin Woods and Vincent Frederick.

The first candidate on Cayman Brac, incumbant Julianna O’Connor-Conolly, who has represented the Sister Islands since 1996, said she was never confident of winning an election as it is always the will of the people. "You just work as hard as you can to retain the confidence and trust of the people for another four-year term, Gods willing," she said.

Moses Kirkconnell, running for a second term for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, said he was confident of being re-elected. "I have done everything I can do in my first term and we have tangible results," he said. "We are workign extremely hard in the recovery after Hurricane Paloma, something every one of us should be involved in. I’m looking forward to a second term to complete the projects we have started." (Left with supporters)

Lyndon Martin, MLA for the Sister Islands from November 2000 to May 2005, and Maxine Moore, who has run three times before unsuccessfully, were also nominated. Despite his legal difficulties, Martin believes he has a good chance of success in the elections. "I think I have a lot to contribute and I have many supporters who have rallied behind me to contest the election on Cayman Brac," he said.

John McLean Jr was the first candidate to arrive at the nomination venue at East End, while in North Side Oswell Rankine arrived at 9:30 am before another Independent candidate Ezzard Miller, who said, "As the underdog it’s going to be a hard fight but I’m going to do everything I can to win and I’ll be dealing with the issues that are good for North Siders."

According to the Elections Law, a person can run for office only if he or she is officially nominated. It is an important step in the elections process, said Deputy Supervisor of Elections Orrett Connor.“After tomorrow, the public will know exactly who is running for office in all of the districts,” he noted. “It doesn’t matter if a person has said previously that he or she is running for office; Nomination Day is where the rubber hits the road.”

Returning officers will receive completed nomination forms, along with the required $1,000 deposit per candidate and other documentation, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at these venues:

West Bay – John Gray Memorial Church Hall, 27 West Church Street;

George Town – Family Life Centre, 49B Academy Way;

Bodden Town –  Bodden Town Civic Centre, 445C Bodden Town Road;

North Side –  Craddock Ebanks Civic Centre, 923 North Side Road;

East End – William Allen McLaughlin Civic Centre, 80 John McLean Drive; and

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman – District Administration Building, 19 Kirkconnell Street, Cayman Brac.

After 3:00 p.m., the nominations will be collated at the Family Life Centre on Walker’s Road, George Town, by the Elections Office’s returning officers.

Oh that’s right… I keep forgetting that people think the government is only for hand outs.  After all, why should one work hard?  Classic response "I’ll just go to Government."  Why should I pay for my childs education? Classic response "I’ll just go to Government."  This is so typical of all the lazy people we see around. Why don’t you get your back side up, and do something for a change?!

It’s not the governments responsibility to take care of you… IT’S YOURS!!! So please, don’t beg for anything… go out and get yourself employment… and if you say, "No one will hire me" start your own business or company… have we forgotten how to be humble?

One other comment, Obsolutely… is spelled absolutely, wat is spelled way and aren’t they some really nice streets you have to beg on though!!!

  2. anon says:

Yeah, far (reaching ramifications) and above (can bearly keep our heads above water) all right.

    • Anonymous says:

Far reaching ramifications (wake up… there is a lot more to the world than just you so far reaching would allow us to actually be a part of the global community – i.e. G20 summit).  You may want to say "positive ramifications."

Above water (didn’t you learn to swim.  You’re probably one of those same people who get the government to take care of you because… it would be too much work for you to do something!!!  Enjoy the water!!!

…………..The PPM doesn’t have the money left over but I’ll be darned if they don’t have a lot of badly needed infrastructural improvements taken care of…………

This is truly a clasic responce. Obsolutedly amazing wat to think  – it is equivelent to "sorry, I have no food to eat, no car to drive, my kids can’t go to school, my wife is sick and I can’t pay her medical bills, I cannot afford collage for the kids, I can’t pay my electrical bills, I cannot pay my water bills, the bank is about to take it all away, but hey look at the mansion I have just built.

Wow – truly amazing way to think. Spare me some change please – we are all out on the streets begging with this one.

For the record, can I just say that only a "simple" person would think that a $90 miliion surplus in budget is a good thing… but maybe that is who the UDP is trying to reach.  $90 mil in surplus means THEY DIDN’T DO DIDLEY SQUAT!!!!

The PPM doesn’t have the money left over but I’ll be darned if they don’t have a lot of badly needed infrastructural improvements taken care of.  In fact, after visiting some other Caribbean islands recently I would venture to say that the PPM has taken our little islands to the fore front of development in the region.  UDP on the other hand complained and gave our birth right away.  Maybe that is why Mac wants to be a christian, so he can give jacob (other nationalities) our birth right!!! way to go UDP.  Come on people, look at the difference… VOTE PPM and lets get even more goodness!!!!

  6. Anonymous says:

I do not think that the PPM did more than the UDP – if you look at their manifesto you’ll see alot of broken promises. People followed blindly and did not even read the ‘BIG RED BOOK’ full of pipe dreams and broken promises. The UDP has 3 1/2 years and left the country with 90 plus million the PPM had 4 1/2 years and left the country with minus 1 billion and counting. Is that success?

    • Anonymous says:

I agree… YOU DO NOT THINK!!!  If you did… you could clrearly see that PPM has done far and above what the UDP could ever hope for.

    • Someone living in East End says:

Living in East End is something else….Last night I was able to witnessed Mr. John B. McLean Jr. public meeting in East End and it was a good turnout though.

It was an awesome evening to listen w/ this young McLean whose principles stand on what he believe is right and just for his people. He doesn’t sound as a typical politician standing in front of everybody with full of promises and flowery words but someone who has the eagerness to fight for what the East Enders have been long time deprived for. The words that he utters really come from the HEART, the statistics that really comes from the FACTS and the ENCOURAGEMENT and INSPIRATION from lay man’s experiences and points of view. Most of us present there were really able to relate and agree on everything he said on as per the problems he has presented. He has stated it clearly and objectively that for sure everybody was able to grasp on what he is trying for them to see and understand that HIS STAND IS TO PROTECT HIS PEOPLE.

I’ve been in the island since 2004 and I was there when IVAN hit Grand Cayman and I myself witnessed the problems how much more him and his constituents. I agree that they overlooked East End in so many aspects; from tourism, to infrastructures and the most is the education that children have to travel from east end to George town just to have a better school to go to w/c is that’s just one of those. I love the BLOWHOLES before IVAN came, I love passing by the East End road going RUMPOINT rather passing Frank Sound Rd. which is the shortest way to go north because of the sceneries butnow not anymore. . . I came down to check the BLOWHOLES sometime latter part of last year and was so frustrated for people from tourism didn’t even bother to fix what IVAN HAS BROKEN and there were even tourist that time who came with their kids that took them very hard to climb up  w/ that ladder type broken stairs. The roads took them long time to get it started and to get it done. Now election is past approaching and people responsible for those infrastructures were pushing those people behind that development to rush in time for it, FOR WHAT????? Of course to SHOW OFF that they have accomplished something under their term but it’s too late FOR HERE COMES JOHNNIE MCLEAN JR. TO RESCUE EAST ENDERS FOR THE TROUBLES and MESS THEY DID.

PEOPLE IN POWER SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE BY THE POWER VESTED IN THEM BY THEIR PEOPLE TO CREATE A BETTER PLACE AND A BETTER COUNTRY BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO PUT YOU IN POWER IS THE ONE WILL THROW YOU OUT OF POST IF YOU DIDN’T DO GOOD.

To people of East End, it is better to consider someone that able to see what is naked to the eye and that has sympathy to his people rather than someone  who has the power to act on what he see but doesn’t have the will to do it.

GOD BLESS YOU MR. MCLEAN AND WISH YOU ALL THE LUCK.

      • Anonymous says:

Someone living in East End, I have nothing against John McLean, Jr. personally but really what you have offered is a lot of hype. The young fellow has shown absolutely no interest or involvement in the affairs of his community, let alone his country, his entire life and now suddenly his heart is with the people and he is taking his stand to protect them! This is simply empty rhetoric.  It is fairly obvious that the UDP has set him up to run against Arden McLean, since they were not able to persuade his dad, or anyone else, this time.

Arden McLean has been an outstanding representative for East End and Minister of government with a tireless capacity for hard work often neglecting his personal needs to address the needs of his constituents and the country at large. I distinctly remember the morning after Hurricane Ivan when most of us had not even emerged from our houses to survey the devastation he was riding on a bulldozer coming to clear the road to East End. Yet he has not focussed only on East End but on this country as a whole and did not simply begin to work near the end of his term as you suggest, but has worked hard throughout with passion and integrity.  I really don’t know how he does it. Do not bear false witness against your neighbour. I give him an "A".

I would be more interested in seeing how the past 4 years has compared with the previous term.  Anyone else?  I agree that we should measure against the manifesto’s but also look at how much more was actually done by the PPM versus the UDP.  BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!PMM dominates!!!

  9. Anonymous says:

Will CNS produce a score card of how each incumbent has performed vs. their manifesto? Also can you provide a register of how many daysof house the incumbents have attended?

CNS: These sound like good ideas but we have a miniscule staff and I think it’s unlikely. As we grow we’ll be able to do more.

  10. Anonymous says:

Why is the webmaster censoring so many comments? I wonder if they were supportive of the UDP if they would be up?

Either way, if the wm will post this, I support what has been done in the last 4 years and look forward to more but with Moses as the first elected.

    Way to go!!!

CNS: The wm has no idea what you are talking about. Some comments are deleted because they are vacuous, rambling, libellous or particularly mean (which somehow always seem to be anonymous), not because of which party they favour. I almost deleted this one on the grounds that it’s daft.

    • Anonymous says:

So only because it’s anonymous it’s daft?  Look at your banners… with the exception of a few independants it’s clear CNS is only for UDP.

If you have been following your own stories…. everything is much more advanced than with any previous government.  Now that PPM has cleaned up all of Mac’s dirt they can get down to the business of advancing the country.  We’ll see what happens on May 20th but don’t be too surprised when you hear that another clean sweep has taken place… PPM all the Way!!!

CNS: The banners are paid advertisements. There are no PPM banners because they have not bought ad space.

Itis very Sad as we are all One “Caymanians” only separated by Gods beautiful Ocean.
That kind of Mentality can only create a Deterioration of “Your” community; we in the Brac still have that so keep your “Hatefulness” to yourself.

Exactly my point. There are the haves and have nots in the Brac. If you are suffering in Cayman Brac then you just arent in the political picture – you must have offended the politicians or the government. If you didnt get the furniture or any freeness then maybe you need to go visit Mr. Kirkconnell’s office or the government offices. They know who is getting and giving the freeness.

There are many who CHOSE NOT TO HAVE INSURANCE. Why should those who do without other things and buy insurance suffer because of irresponsible people who choose to spend their funds on other things and not buy insurance. Like the statused lady who got her house rebuilt for free while elderly  Brakas are not getting help . She has investments and foreign pensions but CHOSE NOT TO INSURE and now MY government is rebuilding for her free. No one would object to the government helping the elderly and the needy but the trouble in the Brac is that it isnt the NEEDY but the GREEDY.

    BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR VOTES.

    • Anonymous says:

BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR VOTES. We need to remember who gave away our county!!

    • Anonymous says:

A lot of people in Cayman Brac couldn’t afford the insurance.  Unfortunately, the wages are very low for some people.  I try to do for myself and only ask if I am very desparate.  Mr. Moses is a good man.  He helped me before he ran for office and that’s the reason a lot of people voted for him.  He always have tried to help people from many years ago.  Please don’t put the Brackers or Mr. Moses or Ms. Julianna down.  Everyone has their faults.  No one is perfect.

I don’t know if you remember but after Ivan Brackers helped Caymanians even to the point of sending all our bread down there even though we barely had any food here because the barge could not come in bad weather.  So don’t begrudge us our help.

"We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools." Martin Luther King

Alot of people in the Brac – if they had their priorities right could pay for insurance.

It is not about affording it – it is about making sacrifices and getting your priorities right. No air travel, none of the latest fasions, no electronic gadgets, and dont forget staying out of the bar rooms and giving up the mistresses for those that have them on the side.

There are many in Grand Cayman who are in low paying jobs and are old and struggle just the same – but they did not get the preferential treatment from the government after Ivan that the Brakas are now getting.

I hope they can find the 200 FREE generators, gas tanks and extension cords for this years hurricane season.

        The truth hurts doesnt it!!!!

  14. The number of ‘Anonymous’ posts is is disheartening. I wonder what is the reason why persons are so afraid to identify themselves? Honestly, in my opinion, if one is not strong enough to stand up and be counted by indentifying themselves, then really why should we pay attention to what they are saying.

Come on people, what are you so afraid of?

    • Anonymous says:

its similar to the  reason people vote in private. So they can demonstrate their right of free speech without offending friends or  neighbours. I think that it is very important to know what people are thinking regardless of who they may be. Would you not listen to them if they are not important? Or would they be put on a list for retaliation if their candidate did not win?  If Mr. Smith of New York writes a letter to the New York Times does it matter who he is? Discussion and free speech should be encouraged not stifled!

To the person who wrote that email:-

    1. You must have been Blind & Deaf for the past 4 years!

    2. You must be on Social Services Income as You do not know what it is to pay bills & support   yourself on Brac Salaries or pension.

    3. You Do Not know how to Work or if you are employed You are studying other peoples business and distorting it.

    4. Do you know & understand the Economy of the BRAC??If you did you would not state such utter rubbish about funds being wasted. Have you checked the population census of Cayman Brac? You would be surpised to discovery that most of the population is made up of the Elderly who have little or no form of Income! Did you know that? So how in the hell they could be expected to rebuild their homes, it sounds like you have no compassion for no one here, which leads me to wonder what kind of person you are, a Bracker or just a hateful individual!

    4. Mosses Kirkconell & His Hard Working Assistant havehad their Office Door "OPEN" & their Phone LINES readily awaiting to answer anyone’s Calls! Answered Questions, helped with many personal issues many times over!!!!

    5. Get a Dictionary & findthe Definition of a "Stooge". You might be pleasantly surprised that you are uneducated to what is happening in "Our Cayman Brac" that is if you are truly a "BRACKER".

From a Bracker who is fed up with all the "Bitching & Betrayal".

Everything is not perfect… but at least the affordable homes project is finally a reality and there is a hope for those young families and single parents as opposed to what there was 4 years ago… NOTHING!!! Nothing except toilet blocks and water tanks.  Mr. Kirkconnell has every right to puff out his chest although he is not that kind of person.  The people finally have someone who they know is getting things done for them.

Premature… sounds like you haven’t been living on island in a while… typical comment.   If you see something that was illegal… report it then stooge.  However, if you see that people are getting  a decent standard of living because they are need then do like every other _ _ _ _ _ite and complain that you aren’t getting anything.  Do me a favor… lookat the rest of the world and see how many of them has as much as you.

  18. Anonymous says:

I like what Mrs. O’connor-Connolly said… “You just work as hard as you can to retain the confidence and trust of the people for another four-year term” she must have been referring to Mr. Kirkconnell because no one has seen her since the last election. She tried to pretend that she was helping people after Hurricane Paloma but as we all saw… it was herself and family that was helped while the rest of us were approached and taken care of by Mr. Kirkconnell. I know who my vote is going for and hope that the rest of the people here can see he is truly for the people, for the island.

  19. Anonymous says:

Kind of premature for Mr. Kirkconnell to be so confident that he will get back in. He has managed to fool some of the people some of the time but hopefully not again. Most of the stooges in the picture with him WORK FOR HIM so what would you expect. He has done no more for Cayman Brac than our first elected member has ever done and continues to do.

Furthermore to ride on the Paloma disaster puffing out your chest that you have done something is terrible. If people took the time to ask for the records of how government funds and other generous donations are being spent in the Paloma recovery they would discover alot of irregularies and unfairness.

-people getting 20ft. containers of free furniture to replace furniture allegedly damaged in the hurricane and then turning around and selling their old furniture

    – people collecting insurance money and monetary donations and keeping the funds and government rebuilding their home for free

    – old shacks that have not been lived in for years being claimed as someone’s home and government rebuilding or giving them funds to rebuild same for free some of whom don’t even live in the Brac.

    – getting funds to repair/replace fences some of whom never ever had a fence for free.

This little Island has less than 2,000 people there is no one here who does not know what is going on least of all the politicians – it is sickening what is happening with government funds more so in these tough times. You still have people suffering in Grand Cayman from hurricane Ivan but no one is suffering in Cayman Brac – Brackas are getting their houses built for free – it is a disgrace!!!

      Furniture- I didn’t get any.

Most people didn’t have insurance or it wasn’t enough.

Monetary donations- Please tell me you are not talking about the $100 from the Kirkconnell fund?  Please tell me who is rebuilding homes for free?

I had to get several loans and I know other people had to too and  I am still paying a mortgage for a destroyed house.

Suffering? You can live my life and you can find out about suffering.  There are people with worse problems than me.  I have a friend living with a baby in a house that is damaged.  She can only stay in one room.  Bugs are coming in everywhere.  That is very bad for a young child.  It’s a wooden house.  There are many others whose houses are condemned.

How about a young mother with about five children in a 1 bedroom apartment with only 1 bed and one child has a disability?  There are people with just 1 bedroom that they can stay in and many people are still staying with other families and in the trailer homes.

Unlike the previous 2nd elected member from Cayman Brac Moses K. has not been an embarrassment to the Sister Islands.  Nor has he hidden for the last four years. Let me help you with a few of the projects that he helped move forward:

    1) Ann Tatum bluff ramp (talked about for many years before but nothing happened)

    2) New Cat-5 Day Care

    3) Medical wing to the Aston Rutty Civic Centre (Being used since Paloma to house displaced elderly)

    4) Instrumental in bring turshiary education to Cayman Brac (UCCI)

    5) Bluff playfield now usable if not complete.

    6) New MRCU facility
