Street fight ends in stabbing
(CNS): According to eyewitness reports, the holiday weekend has been marred by a major street fight that broke out in the early hours of this morning (Monday 17 May), which resulted in a serious stabbing and landed one man in hospital. Police have confirmed that one man has been arrested and another taken to hospital following the incident, which was reported to them around 4:10am. The police said the fight took place in the area near the Marquis Plaza off the West Bay Road but they did not have full details of how the fight had erupted. Eye witnesses told CNS that the police were called to the incident and were already at the scene observing the disturbance when the man was stabbed in the neck.
The victim is now said to be in a serious condition at the George Town Hospital and people at the scene said they were surprised that the situation was allowed to escalate, given the fact that the police had been called and officers from the Uniform Support Group were present when the victim was stabbed in the middle of what is being described as a street fight.
CNS understands that there were a number of fights which had occurred inside some of the clubs in the area but had had all spilled on to the street and then up to the area around the Marquis, where the victim was eventually stabbed.
This is the third time in the last week that victims have received stab wounds to the neck. A 26-year-old man was charged with attempted murder following an incident last Sunday when a woman was airlifted to Jamaica after she was stabbed in the neck at her home in George Town.
On Saturday, 8 May, a 29-year-old man was hospitalized after receiving neck wounds from a broken bottle outside LI nightclub.

The police are asswholes. This whole situation is being blown outta poportion and the innocent friends that tried to help where instead the ones that were attacked? LOL and to the comment about wait till they found out whose son it is thats foolish.
Surely all this begs the question as to whether or not we should have clubs open till getting on for dawn in the first place. Are we making a rod for our own backs? I mean, is it rational to expect sleep-deprived people to act, in general, reasonably? Ever dealt with a tired, fractuous child? How about hundreds of them? That’s exactly what our police officers have to do. Talk about having the patience of Job. Difference is many times they are dealing with twenty-somethings who act like mischievous14 year olds at the best of times : factor in alcohol, petty disputes, and being up way after their bedtimes and, surprise, there’s trouble time after time. And please, what foolishness to encourage all this by allowing a food joint to be still open at 4am based on some misplaced reasoning that "having something to eat will calm things down." There shouldn’t be the need to calm anything down to begin with. Advice to all you party-people : in the absence of sensible regulation of club licensing hours by our leaders, party till maybe 2am, then go home and get some sleep. Personally, I think your attitude is a little ‘draconian’. The vast majority of club-goers and late-nighters cause no trouble at all. Its the usual case of a minority spoiling it for the majority. And of course there’s the other view: there’s very little for our youth do do here as it is – if we take away the clubs and late night entertainment they’ll be bored and looking for something else to do with their time – I suspect we could end up with a bigger problem if we followed your advices.

However, taking away all entertainment venues would indeed be going too far, and was not part of the commentary, but are you seriously contending that two o’clock in the morning is too early to end the evening’s entertainment? And that having large groupings of persons on our streets after four o’clock in the morning is somehow normal, oreven a necessity? For God’s sake, think of the effect on our tourism. Moderation (and common-sense), please.

I just got back from an interview in the States. I had lunch with 5 people. I figured that I would at least have something of interest to talk about, seeing as I live here. Unfortunately each one asked a question specifically about the safety of a person on the island.

this is all so sad that it is happening in cayman . Until we are Parents take on the media ( specifically TV ) and demand that they show less Voilent shows then our boys will continue to grow from innocent little boys to big thugs ,gangsters who have so much hate and anger in their hearts for their fellow man .
Until the TV stations particullarly see the influence they are having on our families then we wouldn’t have a bettter society . Okay please don;t give me the old cliche that says " parents should monitor what their children watch" That is not working obviously because of
1) the children are out of school at 3pm . And parents don’t really get out of traffic and home until about 6pm. That is about 3 hours of being exposed to sex and voilent behaviour and attitudes by our children
2) Children were NOT born with these voilent behaviours. They have LEARNT them from the TV shows ( thus their environments)
3) Many parents do NOT know that they can call the TV station for help to help block out the voilent channels with is about 95% of the channels and shows
4) We tell our children to stay out of bad company yet we bring it right into their Living room and Bedrooms . How deadly yet we look around and become alarmed , and shocked once we see our children develop such voilent, angry, deviant young people
Get a grip TV station. . You have a social responsibility to present our families with cleaner, family, PBS shows etc that will influence our thoughts , actions, behaviours, manners as young people and a society as a whole

It’s frightening that the RCIPs don’t have a protocol to deal with situations like this. If there is hostility and fighting between two large groups at four in the morning you would think they would at least make sure some back-up and an ambulance was available. At best you think they would get other officers to the scene asap, arrest the trouble-makers and move the rest of the people on. To just stand and watch the fight escalate until someone gets stabbed…that is scary. That basically means if you’re out and a group of people start harassing you or your girlfriend you are on your own and the police will not intervene until you are basically dead and even then they will do it slow.
Yea — they probably do and it probably goes something like this:
1. investigate the complaint
2. if it is a mob scene and there aren’t enough police present — don’t go get killed for an argument over a girl

Excuse me, but four o’clock in the morning is not a normal time for human activity, unless one is "on nights". There seems to be a weird acceptance going on here. Human beings need eight hours sleep to function normally. Being out of your bed at four o’clock in the morning is not normal. Are we saying that people awake at four o’clock in the morning can be expected to function the same way as we would expect people to function at four o’clock in the afternoon? What is this, some kind of new reality? Please folks, let’s get real. This isn’t an "attitude" issue, it’s a physiological/behavioural issue. Do the people on the boards that approve these opening hours consider such things? Evidently not, or they wouldn’t be so foolish as to approve such ridiculous applications. I just pity the poor police officers having to cope with these sleep-deprived, rather confused individuals. All you grownups out there, start speaking out.
Well I guess from what I’m reading the only good thing the " POLICE" did was arrested the suspect(s) of this crime … But apparently they just stood there and watched as the victim was being assulted.

I am an avid club goer, in the Cayman Islands and Overseas. I have witnessed patrons threaten each other, in front of armed police in Cayman. Saying they are going to go get there gun, and the police officers DO NOT REACT, not even a flinch.
I have witnessed this overseas, and the police immediately apprehend the ppl and search there cars, or detain them in the patrol car / van till the night is over.
This incident was no different. If the police is trying to offer a presence by being there. They should have intervened. NOT WATCH THEM. Put them in the car search and escort them to leave or arrest them. Its simple, you have to be proactive in these times.
But the difference in the US is that the Police have guns – much easier to apprehend someone.
Don’t forget the backbone and cajones!! BOTH of which are sorely lacking in the RCIP!! That being said, some of those British WPC’s have bigger B@LL$ than most of the Male PC’s…

Do we have some kind of ‘loitering’ law? Maybe it would help police out if we had a no loitering law after certain hours. I understand there’s a food place at the marquis plaza but honestly, if you’re not buying food or with someone who’s buying food, then there’s no need for you to be hanging around in the parking lot at 4:10am causing trouble. If you want to hang out with friends, then head to someone’s house.

Depends if you think being awake just before dawn is good for you. Medical research continues to reinforce the need for eight hours sleep. So assuming your natural time for awakening is not about one o’clock in the afternoon (if you turn in at 5 am), then you’ll at least be disrupting your natural sleep pattern. Might I suggest you consult with your parents/doctor on your question? (Curious : why 4.10, exactly?)
Actually don’t need loitering law if fighting is ongoing and THREATS being thrown around. All you do is call in a squad van and round them up and take them to central.
What you don’t do is what they did. Sit there and wait for a true victim. This one is on their heads. They allowed this to progress.
It’s time our RCIP learnt about being pro-active. Using the law as a tool to break up situations. I;m sure all things being teh same the young man would much rather be at central on lockdown then in Critical Care Unit.
Encouragingly, another voice of reason. And regarding threatening police, when you threaten police, you threaten every man, woman and child in this country, for sure. Anyone threatening police should be arrested and charged immediately, and if that means calling out the riot squad, so be it. We live by the rule of law, not thuggery. To our police officers, I say God bless you, and remember, the public you are servants to is by and large appreciative of your efforts, even though at times some wayward (and, when all said and done, really quite foolish) individuals might make you conclude otherwise!
I was their at Al La Kebab, after I got my food I walked to my car to leave.
The insident happened because the victim was defending a girl who he knew was being harassed by a group of men in a car particulary one who is JAMAICAN NATIONAL to leave the girl alone. The man started to punch the victim and victim repeatedly puched him away and finally started fighting back. The police stood a mear 20 feet away looking at the scene! Their was ONE police officer off duty and out of uniform that came and stopped the fight along with a few other of the victim’s friends. It wasn’t untill a minute of or so after the fight was over that he realized he was bleed and then he fell to the floor and the ambulance was called. THE AMBULANCE TOOK 30 MINUTES TO GET THEIR FROM THE HOSPITAL!! While the victim was on the ground the ground the XXXX police came a pepper sprayed the victim and friends around him who were took off their shirts to try and stop the bleeding. Yes folks the XXXXXX did this.
But you know what I must give them a little congradulations becuase the caught the guy who did it.. (which we all know rarely happens) XXXXXXX.
Whether the police are at fault or not, that still doesn’t change the fact that gone are the days when innocent, mature people can come out for a night of fun without the foolishness that’s going on with this generation nowadays. What the hell is wrong with you people?? Why is it that you have to ruin the privileges that are granted to businesses or the safe environment that partygoers were once used to? And why are you bringing your friggin disputes on the street with you? If you’re having issues with each other, go to the police station, make a report or go to your lawyer. And pertaining to the comments on placing blame on the clubs, this is BS! How can you expect club owners and their security to control these violent offenders that choose to carry out these acts after they leave the premises? Just because a place is granted permission to open late occasionally that doesn’t give anyone the right to go down the street and shoot/stab their enemy just because the lyrics of some stupid song played in the club earlier went to their small minds and gave them the idea that they can play Steven Segal. Come on guys (and gals too), give us old people a break here. There’s some us that continue to live an outgoing lifestyle and we want to come out and enjoy ourselves too without having to drive around all night trying to find a place where there’s a minimum expectacy of you all starting a war after you get in a few drinks. Police are Great when they control the murders and everyone is feeling good. You can go shopping, or jogging or partying till late hours. But the moment there is an incident you all pass your adverse criticism and judgement on them. They are trying. they are only human and need the cooperation of all citizens and residents of these Islands. Those of you that say you will not assist the police by giving evidence or share information of what you know,shame on you!!! Those of you who declare you are going to leave your Island thumbs down to such decision.Responsible citizens don’t leave when these challenges arise, they hold their grounds and fight for what they believe in. Rather than pondering these steps, you should resolve to do what you can to help preserve law and order in the Islands. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. All of us should make a deliberate effort to help rid the islands of crime. Also if you think the police did not act apprppriately at the incident, step up to the plate and lodge a complaint.
Standing there and watching someone get stabbed is not trying! Get real. In some countries, regular people can go to jail if they do not help someone in danger – its called the good samaritian law. The Police cant even act like regular people here in Cayman. The cops that were there should be tossed off the force. Why are we paying their salaries???

It’s a shame that someone was injured, but there is a lesson to be learnt. For any confrontation to occur, there must be two opposing parties. Obviously there were quite a sufficient group of people on each side and you mean to tell me that you needed the police to step in with an almighty hand and beat everyone apart? Not one of you were there by force. everyone of you stayed there by choice and probably through egos stoked by peer pressure. Had you all come to the realisation that confrontation was imminent, each one of you could have said, "We have gone far enough with this. Let’s walk away and leave things be." Instead of blaming the police, look at yourselves. Someone initiated the confrontation, all of you helped to fuel it by your mere presence, not one of you said to those engaged that it was time to discontinue the situation and pull them away to cool off and not one of you were samrt enough to walk away. You stayed and watched the stabbing occur. What did each of you do? With all of you present, why did you let one person stab another?
On the other side, you have the police who are clearly outnumbered. They have got to consider their own safety in a hostile environment. The Police are ineffective if they do not have sufficient resources to control an agitated and hostile crowd. If they use force to disperse the crowd, you would have either wanted to gang and beat them, because they were few in number at the time, or you would have said that they were using heavy handed tactics unwarrantedly and use that as justification to incite an attack on them.
You all need to have respect for yourselves and others and act like educated human beings. Settling every dispute by means of violence is very primitive and immature behavior. So next time you are out in your numbers, use your influence for good and not stand by and watch another human perpetrate an act of violence on another human being.
I was there and I witnessed the whole thing. After the fact that he was stabbed in the neck I watched as the police stood by and just looked on, while his friends were trying to save his life. It didn’t have to be taken that far if the police actually did something. There were about 3 other altercations around A La Kebab previous to the incident and afterward is when my friends were saying that they had been pepper sprayed. After? Seriously? After someone gets stabbed in the neck? Is this the service our money is paying for? In that case I would definitely like a refund.
Dont even get me started on the length of time it took for the ambulance to arrive. If anything ever happens to me I’ve already told people to just throw me in the car and take me to the hospital. That was a serious injury not a sprained ankle. They’re so lucky that he made it and didn’t die.
For all those that are saying that the police are not to blame, look at it this way. If a fight breaks out at the club I can only assume that it is the security’s responsibility to put the attackers outside. They are not the police and they are only working for the club. If the ‘victim’ wants to then go outside- who’s to stop them? Once the security is aware that there is or a potential altercation, the least they can do is phone the police. In my opinion, police should already be on stand-by at the clubs at a certain hour. Apparently the police were already there in witness to a fight/ argument, they obviously just stood by and watched. Maybe they tried to keep it under control, I don’t know. But I believe that in such an instance they should have thrown all parties into the police car and taken them to the station, after the first warning. I say this because in these times, it would not had even been safe for them to let these people leave the scene because matters could have escalated elsewhere leading to aworse outcome. All those that love to run and watch fights, they should have been the ones to be pepper sprayed. Why? ‘Because they are too dam fass’ and love to instigate war! How is it that you are supposed to feel safe anymore, when you get stabbed right in front of the police?? It’s bad enough when you call them and they have to try and get to you, but THEY WERE THERE! A man could have been killed and what were they going to say? It should have never gotten to that extent. If they felt that the situation was too overwhelming, then they should have called for back-up. I can personally testify that I have seen an altercation outside of a nightclub and the police were there and they could not/ WOULD NOT hold back the four or five girls that were trying to start a fight. And when one of them tried to leave they had her blocked in with their cars as if they were wanting to see her get beat up. I hate to say it but they can be absolutely USELESS at times. It’s ridiculous. Events like this only places more fear in the hearts of the innocent and boldness in the minds of the perpetrators..

I was not there on teh night of the incident so I cannot speak on the actions of the police officers but to put ALL the blame on the RCIP is just luducrous. The ppl involved in teh altercation are not infants, they are grown @$$ boys who know right from wrong and who have common sense. Everyone must beheld accountable for tehir actions. The RCIP should not have let it escalate to the stabbing?? NO! The individuals should not have let it escalate to that. With all that has been going on in Cayman, prolonging a confrontation the way they did that night is the LAST THING anyone should do. I have to say I am <b>appalled</b> if the Police did just stand there and watch, and did not try and prevent this situation. I am just as <b>appalled</b> that people are giving a thumbs down to those that are pointing the finger at police.
Yes it is easy to point the finger at police, but at this point, I have to tell you that they <b>are</b> not earning any respect in any way, shape or form from the community. Mr. Baines is equally as dissappointing to the Caymanian people. I truly beleive (as an expat!) that a Caymanian Commissioner should be appointed, without question. I don’t for a second beleive that a Caymanian appointed to that role would be biased, and I have met many Caymanians who would serve that role with honor, respect and without prejudice.
This is becoming a very dangerous place and I beleive that <b>strong</b> Caymanians could change this island and turn everything around if given a chance. The UK will have oversight of course (by nature of being an BOT), but Caymanians can run this country <b>if</b> they are given the chance and <b>if</b> they are start standing up to those people who are pushing them around (McKeeva included!). I know there are Caymanian leaders and I am holding out hope they get together, rise up together against the establishment (read UK and Caymanian tyrants), put small differences to the side, and take back this island!

officers at the scene should not be blamed. if you were aware of the ‘situation in the station’, you would understand that the problem lies at the top.
i will become more vocal and reveal some of the real issues in time. the fact is here – the officers you see not doing their jobs are proverbially handcuffed when they get in their cars to start their shifts.

Interesting that everyone is milling around and obviously confronting each other, and yet the police get the criticism for not stepping in. At 4am in the morning, how many police officers are there to take on a crowd of a hundred plus? Next thing will be a knife in one of their backs, and it sounds to me all they would have done is move the problem.
Next question – if it looks like it’s kicking off, why are you all still in the area? Why would you not get yourselves out of harms way? Time to go home when things are getting ugly – or are you all hanging around yourselves to seewhat happened.

Stop talking XXXX After the police watched 2 guys fighting until one got stabbed, then pepper sprayed innocent bystanders for trying to help the man that was stabbed. XXXXX Instead of parting the fight they pepper sprayed the XXXX’s son and toll him they needed 2 protect him because he was the XXXX’s son. This is the same reason why young people from Cayman like myself will never trust or cooperate with the police. I am only 22 years old and had to watch my friend get his neck slashed open last night. The police could have stopped this disturbance a long time before and we would not be here talking about it.

I’m sorry for your friend’s injury, but did you think about moving on when the problem started? Why were you out at 4 a.m. anyhow? Nothing good happens at that hour anyhow and clubs have been shut a long time before. Isn’t that the reason why you are talking about it now? Everyone has a decision to make and the decision to leave the problem area was not choosen. Peer pressure took over for your friend and violence happened. I hope your friend’s injuries heal soon. Obviously you saw that there was a disturbance too….why didn’t you leave the scene and take your friend with you? What were you doing hanging around in a parking lot at 4:10am anyway? You’re so quick to blame the police, but you could have gotten away from the situation. Remember that you have to give respect in order to receive it in return.
All you youngsters do nowadays is take take take and never do anything in return. No wonder this island is going to ****, none of you have any respect for anyone anymore. What kind of people are you hanging out with anyway if they’re the type to get into fights and stir up trouble?

The Police will not only be under pressure because of their non involvement but when they did get involved they used "pepper spray" on the friends that were helping the victim. Wait till they find out whose son was pepper sprayed.

I was there last night. There was several altercations taking place and the police just stood there leaning on their SUV while the Security guards that have NO WEAPONS, NO VEST, NO PROTECTION was there pulling people apart and seperating the fights.
This incident moved into the street and the police just watched as they argued and started to fight. I guess they were waiting to see who would get beat down then come and intervene. I can bet they were not expecting to see it get that far. Even so, once the stabbing took place they were very slow to respond. I think the police were more scared because of the large crowd than anything else.
This incident would have never gotten to where it is had the police not called for more officers and started to tell the people to leave. That is all they had to do. Then after the stabbing they gonna spray pepper spray on the faces of those trying to help the dude on the ground. DUMB ASSES TOO LATE POLICE!! I think this is a direct embaressment to the RCIP and I am really ashamed in them. I have no confidence that our police could handle an all out riot on this island or if they would not piss themselves in a shoot out. The police here just like the last comment said ARE WORTHLESS. Here we have a chance to see the police show some authority and instead theystand right up and watch this young man get his throat cut wide open. SHAME ON YOUR COMMISSIONER BAINES SHAME ON YOU!!

In response to Jim’s comment, the police were pepper spraying his own friends that were there trying to comfort him and hold his hand while he was laying near death on the pavement! Need I mention that the ambulance took FORTY FIVE MINUTES to arrive despite the fact that the police had already been on the scene even prior to the actual attack. Also, pepper spray did (in agreement with the last comment) increase the difficulty for my high school friend to breathe and should be used in moderation, just a litle tip for our lovely police officers seeing that they pepper sprayed his best friend so much that his entire face swoll to the size of a basketball! WORTHLESS is right! The police literally stood around and watched while his friends and one police officer (whose name I won’t mention but he too is a family friend) stayed by his side and tried to put pressure on the wound to slow down/stop the bleeding. All I have to say is thank Christ that the attacker didn’t hit his jugular vein!
My prayers go out to his family and close friends. I have faith he will pull through, but I tell you one thing…seeing the police’s response to a fight that wasn’t no where near as dangerous as the gang incidents that have been going on I have very little confidence in how "protected" our country and its citizens truly are.

Did not expect anything better of the RCIP. I was there and all they did was stand there and after the man get stabbed they wanna go pepper spray people to move away from him. WUTLESS PO PO’S we gah here. And you expect dem to be the ones save us from real gangs shooting? Lucky this was a knife and not a gun or they might had open fire on the crowd.

You both are fools. The police should have stopped the problem before it got to that point. And you talking about giving him oxygen? yeah oxygen when they spraying pepper spray all over the place? The police messed up and that is that.
That’s the problem with Cayman; everyone relies on the Police to stop crime. Rather, it is a community effort and if you are in the way of the Police from doing their jobs, you are not helping the situation.
The root cause of crime is from Caymanian parents neglecting their children!
If we cant rely on the police to stop crime then why do we pay them?? Whay do we have so many?? Why not get rid of them genious??
It seems obvious that the police need much more training in handling
incidents like this. This should be a wake up call for them to do retraining
of all officers to know how to properly handle these situations and keep
them from escalating into violence and serious injury.
They need to put those” high priced investigators” from Britain to work in
mandatory re training for all officers.
