Uniform troubles continue with further delays

| 02/09/2010

(CNS): Following earlier announcements that government is having trouble with uniform orders for the public schools, officials confirmed yesterday that further delays are now expected on some of the new school uniforms for the high schools. A limited supply of Year 12 Programme uniforms are available and parents will be allowed to buy two complete uniform sets as a temporary measure from today (Thursday) until the remainder of the order arrives. In the meantime, officials are issuing a dress code for students who don’t have a uniform for September only. Although the delay has not been explained, some parents angered by it have said officials simply did not order the new uniforms in time.

The ministry and department said they are working closely with the home school associations to ensure that uniforms are received as quickly as possible, but the delay in the arrival of uniforms for Clifton Hunter, John Gray and the CI Further Education Centre (CIFEC) has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the education department’s control. However, some parents have blamed the department as they say it did not plan ahead or make preparations for the uniforms in time.

According to the officials, as a result of the missing uniforms students can wear plain dress shirts, polo shirts, PE shirts, or t-shirts, while bottoms must be knee-length or longer, plain, smart-casual or business skirts for girls; full-length plain dress pants for boys and girls (Dockers are considered suitable) and all pants must be worn with belts.

The Department of Education Services said students won’t be allowed to wear clothing bearing writing or logos, or clothing that is ripped, cut or multi-coloured. Officials are also banning jeans, sweatpants, and shoes other than those prescribed will also not be permitted. Clothing should neither be baggy nor tight. Officials also indicated the precise fit of the clothes and stated that clothes could be neither baggy or tight.
Uniform sales will begin Thursday, 2 September, with uniform shop hours as follows:

John Gray High School: 10am to 4pm, Mondays through Saturdays at the JGHS Campus; Clifton Hunter High School: 4pm to 7pm Mondays through Fridays, and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays at the Bodden Town Civic Centre; Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC): 4pm to 7pm Mondays through Fridays, and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays in the old George Hicks High School uniform shop, across from the Lion’s Pool.

Meanwhile, the delivery of bottoms over at the Savannah Primary School has also been delayed and kids will be without their trousers, shorts or skirts until mid-September. In the interim, students should wear their physical education (PE) uniforms on PE days. On other days returning students may wear their polo/oxford shirts with their old bottoms — providing they still fit, while new students and those who have outgrown their old uniforms may wear their polo/oxford shirts with smart casual bottoms.

Smart casual does not include jeans or sweatpants. Trousers must be plain and should not have rips, cuts or logos. They should not be too tight or baggy, and must be worn with a belt at the waist. Skirts must be at least knee-length.

Here school uniforms change almost every year.A uniform is not a fashion statement.

  3. Dale says:

How could this bunch of incompetent UDP group manage the country when they cannot manage the simple school uniform order for the children of this country???

    • Anonymous says:

The UDP is too busy sending all of government’s money to Cayman Brac to manage the school uniform order

  4. SICK AND TIRED OF THE B...S... says:

Any chance government has not been able to pay the suppliers…especially bearing in mind the deputy premier’s recent comment that they had recently struggled to pay the civil service salaries……………

So, now it has been proven that THE PARENTS GO AND ORDER THE UNIFORM…I hope for goodness sake that ALL PARENTS made sure that their children (especially the boys) uniforms ARE PROPERLY FITTED AND HEMMED!! Not dragging to the ground with their pants half way down their backsides and 2-3 sizes to big.  I hope their shirts fit them properly and not hanging out as if they just woke up!!!  These are uniforms and uniforms should be fitted properly.  These boys that wear them (the majority) look like street thugs. This has nothing to do with image.  If you want to define the style it looks like what they wear in prison "baggy clothes"

I wonder what happen to I think it was Anglin that stated all uniforms will be worn in the proper fashion..  lmao that didn’t last long.

For goodness sake have some pride in yourselfs.

what does this have to do with the fact that the uniforms are not here? stick to the topic! I pre- paid for my childs uniforms, I expect to have her uniforms and she will attend school in what she has, this is not Beverly Hills! you want khaki pants and polo shirts give me a voucher and I will glady purchase them! Thank YOU!

If you look at all of the changes in service providers over the last year I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a new supplier, hastily setup and unable to deliver, but with good connections to the new administration.

A school uniform should not change so often. That is lack of empathy for the parents that have to purchase them and throw them away when a new style is announced.

Why cant a uniform be a polo shirt and a pants or shirt.Items that may be purchased on island.??

Why should money be sent overseas to purchase uniforms. Uniform manufacturing was a local enterprise since the formation of schools…before the schools took it over.

Schools should stick to education instead of uniform contracting. The powers that be need to look into this and reverse this trend.

So for us parents that waited for hours in line and missed work hours as well to PRE – ORDER our childs school uniforms are now being told that its a first come, first serve basis and if there are no uniforms to fit your child then we must go out there and purchase NEW clothes to best suit the schools approval???

Are these people sane? I hope they are not teachers as well because this does not sound very bright to me. TO BE HONEST – I am unable to purchase any NEW clothes to suit your interest, my child will have to attend school it what we have which may just be a decent pair of jeans and a casual top. It is not her fault that YOU placed the orders late and she well deserves her education and like i said we actually PRE ORDERED the uniforms so we would be well ready for school when it started. Now you say they are not here and she has to wear this or will be sent back home?!? talk about adding insult to injury!!!!! You all need to do better!!

I’m not entirely sure I understand the thinking behind introducing new school uniforms at a time when people are struggling to make ends meet.

I would go on but for possibly the first time in my adult life I have been left speechless……

    • Jamanian says:

New schools, so new uniforms. Clifton Hunter and the Year 12 program didn’t exist before now so I can understand new uniforms there. With JGHS I heard that the change happened because the uniforms they had before were so specialized – specially woven material and all – that they needed new uniforms which could be easily produced by any uniform vendor.

  8. Dwindling Hope says:

This is the reason that Government should have opted for polo shirts and generic navy blue or khaki bottoms that can be readily purchased anywhere (Walmart, K-mart, JCP, Jamaica). The choice to go with customized uniforms again was a poor one which adds to the costs for parents in these already difficult times. What’s worst is that now many parents will have to purchase clothing to accomodate this lack of foresight because the wardrobe of the average teenager is made up of jeans, above the knee skirts and shorts. Guess, we’ll have to pull out our Sunday best until the uniforms reach…….hopefully (though unlikely), that will be quicker than it took to get the police helicopter here!

    Thanks again!!!!

No wonder this Island is going to the dog’s!

Why can the schools not puchase your uniforms on Island and help support the enonomy?

The reason you don’t have uniforms is because they WERE ordered overseas! YOU DESERVE WHAT YOU GET!

The government needs to spend on Island and stop sending orders overseas.

Obviously someone here has connections and is doing business while the poor locals suffer.

and don’t forgetAtlantic Dept Sore – always there with uniforms.  I bought navy pants from there & very good quality.  I’m not going to buy dress pants for my daughter just for one month.  Can’t afford it.  It’s foolish to be sending our money abroad.  Leave that for the expats who need to sendtheir money home.  We need to keep our money home!!  These people just can’t think logically — what a mess.

      • Brit to the Bone says:

"Navy pants"?  Is the colour of underwear part of school uniform now?  Is this a new move over from Japan?

  9. Anonymous says:

Why don’t the schools do like the CIG and change the laws to accommodate their lack of ability?  Kids do not have to wear trousers, shorts, or skirts until further notice?  Everyone will understand.

    cig/civil service incompetence never ends……..

‘delivery of buttons has been delayed’……………hahahahaha

I presume that given your apparent inability to read that you are a product of this incompetence?
