Sudden cancellation of premier’s address to country
(CNS): Just four days after it was announced that tonight (Tuesday 14 September) the premier would make a national radio and television address to the country on the economy, his press officer has said that this is postponed. While no explanation for the delay or any new date set for the broadcast has been given, the premier’s office says that the question and answer town hall meeting at the George Town Town Hall will still take place at 8pm Wednesday, 15 September, as announced. The premier’s message was to be carried on Radio Cayman and Cayman27 this evening, and it was announced last week that he planned to speak to the people of the Cayman Islands about some of his government’s economic policy.
The message was going to give an overview of the government’s strategy to deal with the current economic situation across all sectors of the Cayman economy.

Really, I mean what was he going to say anyway? Here’s a brief summary.
"We are broke, the PPM did it, it’s not my fault".
"We don’t have any money (because of the PPM) but we are going to build a massive new hurricane shelter on the Brac, embark on a massive redevelopment of the George Town waterfront area, etc, etc, etc"
"I always liked the idea of Pirates Week, lets do it."
"Was that the dinner bell? Got to go."
u r funny
How about the ‘premier’ make the first sacrifice like pay his own light bill and not take it out of the public purse – Hypocrite to the max!
Stop the hatred and cut the man some slack…At least, unlike Kurt Tibbetts, he is not afraid to face the public knowing he will be crucified on many issues.
He could be out on his boat fishing or hanging out at Over the Edge sipping a few…like we know who..
"He could be out on his boat fishing or hanging out at Over the Edge sipping a few…like we know who" No need to worry about those things, Mac dosn’t spend the time in Cayman to partake in such things
He probably doesnt hang out at a local bar or goes fishing on a boat.. he probably has a yacht and hangs out at the Ritz….. 😐
From these comments, it seems that most people are happy to have their politicians out fishing, drinking at bars, travelling the world or yachting whilst we pay them fat salaries.
From my eyes something is wrong with us, not them!!
What’s wrong with fishing and what’s wrong with sipping a few at Over the Edge – great location, great place with great food and drinks….and it is on Grand Cayman!
We all know who, the difference being, he is doing it with his own money in Cayman, unlike Mac who carries an entourage abroad, first class all the way.
Yes not afraid to face the public – I guess that’s why he’s spent so much of the last year abroad; why we’ve heard nothing from him about what he proposes to do about the crime situation which is getting out of hand on the island; why he blames the public and any other scapegoat he can find for mistakes that are of his own making; why he cancelled his speech…. I could go on, and on, and on, and on….. but No, he’s been cut enough slack since coming into office and its time he was held accountable for his actions.
Don’t get it do you? Mac holds the only UDP seat that he feels is untouchable (let’s hope he’s in for a surprise). He deliberately keeps the other sitting Party members as much out of the spotlight and the wildy unpopular decisions as he can in an effort to maintain their seats. They get to present the feelgood stories such as the laws to protect children, etc. Others are told just to be quiet and save themselves if at all possible (Ellio, Dwayne, that means you)This is nothing more than a little game for them. It’s a shame so few get it. Especially in West Bay.
" He could be out on his boat fishing or hanging out at Over the Edge sipping a few…like we know who.."
I’m sure that none of the above cost me the tax payer anything. Fishing means he’s feeding his family. That saves me money. Having a few have to cost less than Mac’s trips, housekeeper, bodyguards for him and Julie, hotels for Julie and her bodyguard, etc
Time for a change. Maybe we as a people need to set about enacting a law that limits the number of terms one can serve in office, so that for many of the long standing members of the PPM and UDP this will be their last term. I mean 1984-2010 is way too long to have the same ideals and people be in power or the opposition.
I agree with the term limits, but theres not enough in the political pool for it to work effectively. Me personally would agree to a 10 or 15 year service limit.
10 to 15 years ?!! oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh nnnnnnnnnoooooooooo
or was that a jail sentence?
Each term is 4 years … so your math is a bit off
That would be one of the, if not the primary reason why we find ourselves where we are today.
In any other civilised country, democracy, leaders can serve no more than 2 terms, but then again this is a banana republic with leaders that make laws as they see fit, which benefits them rather than the country they have been elected to govern.
The country is being crippled by the increases in the price of EVERYTHING. From work permits to import duty, port fees, gas, etc. etc. I read that the Premier said we have to give up something in order to get something. Here’s a start, give up your 30% of your salary like you promised and maybe people will start to respect you. Give up all the perks you took which you claim were in accordance with the new constituion. If we were not in such a mess, I would have no problem with your taking all these perks. CUT DOWN ON ALL NON ESSENTIAL GOVT. SPENDING BUT ESPECIALLY YOUR OWN.
Last night I saw a lady on TV who is about to lose her house for the sake of a few thousand dollars. Give that lady a concession, like the Ritz developer. Find her a job and get one for her son while you are at it. What really hurt me about that lady was that she was not asking for money or anything else – just a job. I’m sure she’s not the only one in that position. Negotiate with the banks to help her. Otherwise, you will end up having to help through social services, or is it Govt.’s intention to simply let these people starve while you jet up and down in first class and stay in 5 star hotels. These are your people. The ones you promised to help and what have you done? 10% (at least) Caymanians unemployed and how many work permit holders are there???
This Govt. has driven business away with their 100% plus increase in work permit fees. There areplenty of other jurisdictions with much lower fees and anyone in business is in it to make money, not act as a charity to a govt which never ever stops growing or spending.
We need a real leader and real MLA’s who care about this country more than themselves.
And that MLA, and Leader’s name is:-
Mr. Ezzarde Miller, Member for Northside.
Ezzard for Premier in 2013 !
Case closed.
You must be smoking something?
"Case closed" – No. "Cayman closed" more like.
Yea, come hell or high water, am gonna give him "HELL" Wednesday night. When I get through rolling out some hard core questions at him he’ll wish he cancel this too. But, I give em credit on having the meeting.
I thought he would have canceled the meeting Wed night and have the "addressing" the country via the wirewaves and the Plasma’s Tuesday night.
Weather is in his favor to cancel his meeting Wednesday.. Something else he can blame for his unproductiveness.
I suppose the address to the Country was not important enough to disrupt his trip off Island!
Doesn’t surprise us!
Sorry to break this to you, but you can "think" as much as you like that is won’t hurt, but if you bash your head against a brick wall, IT WILL HURT…
I agree with what you say, but help me out here please. What positive thoughts are you having about the wholesale, government sanctioned stealing of peoples pensions? And what can I spin happy about the our ‘leaders’ not following their own laws? How to feel giddy about them not reporting their outside interest AS REQUIRED BY LAW.
I really do believe that what you think is what you get, but I’m stuck on some of these blatant issues. I mean I know I could maybe get happy if I started ignoring some of the laws of civilization and gathered in the money and loved the money and the dominance. Maybe that’s the answer, just start loosening up on the morals. Help me here.
Maybe he is hard at work on that list of sacrifices he plans to make.
I like Mr Bush. He has a nice face and when he smiles the sun shines.
He’s also the snuggliest cuddliest looking politician in Cayman.
God Bless McKeeva Bush!!!!!
Just love it when somebody makes me laugh!
These sound like fantastic qualifications.
LMAO…At least I get your sense of humor…I nearly spit out my coffee when I read your post…keep it up… 🙂
are you the same person that peed themselves earlier???
as a rule, I don’t agree with the voice of reason (just ask me mum) but if anybody, no matter what their politics, doesn’t think our beloved isn’t the snuggeliest, cuddliest, dreamiest hunk o’ yummy ever to squeeze into a neck tie, well then there is something very wrong with that person
Here is the premier’s economic policy in a nut shell. He wants all of our money (and anyone else’s money) so that he and the deputy premier can waste it as quick as possible.
There seems to be sometimes, unnecessary negativism on government policy. Case in point on one of the talk shows this week, the practice of catering to cruise passenger visitors was zeroed by show hosts because these passengers only spend an average of $100 per visitor. For the mega ships that equals an ashore spend of 250,000 to 400,000 per ship, in addition to the taxes paid to Cayman Government by the vessel operators. Seems to me, that’s a good return that many resorts would long for.
Neil — you have to understand — the government will lose the taxes paid to the Cayman Government by the vessel operators as it will be redirected to the person building the berthing facility.
If you think Cayman is in deep trouble or if you think it’s in recovery – you’re absolutely right! Negative or positive – what you "think" is what you get in life. C’mon people – can we not find something good to say? You are throwing yourselves deeper into depression and taking the weak at heart along with you with all of this negative chatter. Roll up your sleeves and work with what you have! This is it people – so get off the pity pot and make the best of it!
If you came to the table with an empty cup and it is now half-full then you have a lot to be thankful for.
However, if you started with a full cup and it is now half-empty because of the waste and tax increases since the tyrant came to power just over a year ago ,then you have good reason to be pi$$ed.
Your cup was full before this Government came to power??? You were either very lucky or you were like the PPM and didn’t see there was a hole in the bottom where everything was seeping out but refused to believe it was happening…it is called recession something the previous government was in total denial of…remember KURT…"not on the kindest of mornings.." I’ll bet those words haunt him until this day.
All that being said UDP needs to pull their head out of their A$$ and start doing something rather than talking about it..Build the dock..Arden built roads that everyone fought him on and now we reap the benefits. McKeeva needs to get that dock or something started around here or we all are going to start walking around with empty cups in our hands begging for handouts.
Come on Cayman people, stop the fighting. Sure some of us don’t want this government but they are what we have for now. Lets get behind them to try to get something going in this economy again before we all starve to death.
I had a cup….but someone STOLE IT….
Hey Premo,
don’t you actually need an economic policy before you can talk about one? Howz about you actually take some time to develop a credible one, which provides some consistent direction to inform Government policy before you end up with yet another embarassing public blunder — I’m just saying.
Perhaps someone explained to Mac that "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too late for that school of thought….
Ah, but does he have the right to remain silent anymore……:)
When is he going to address crime?
Tomorrow at 8 AM …. Sharp!
He is addressing you loser. He built a wall around his house. He has body guards. He leaves the crime ridden island every chance he gets. He ‘bought’ a condo in the Ritz XXXX He probably has bullet proof glass in his limo/tank. The question Mr. smarty pants is when are you going to address crime? huh?
I have to admit that a little bit of pee escaped when I read your post.
I have that effect on people
McKeeva Bush needs to go away, he needs to be removed from power permanently and never again allowed any position of leadership in the Cayman Islands. This country is being destroyed by him and those he has whored this country out to. Insurrection now, how much more proof is needed, look at the man’s history.
Thank you Jonathan, I always knew you would do the right thing. Step away from them while you still have credit.
Can’t he just cancel his Premiership – then we’ll all be a lot better off I’m sure.
Can anybody say why? Perhaps we can get the answer at the Town Hall meeting Wednesday night. That should be pretty interesting, I hope we can get some facts told to our questions. Urging everyone to come out with their questions. Looks like the premier is following in the footsteps of the US president???
Not sure what you mean. Can’t ever think of a time when The State of the Union was postponed indefinitely.
Hmmmmm…I wonder why? Perhaps someone came up with some money and stunned him LOL! or maybe his gripe with the media is still too fresh on people’s minds. XXXX
Typical.
Is it because he hasn’t had time to read the speech that was / was not prepared by someone else?
Or has another function come up instead like All-U-Can-Eat at the Ritz?
I’m not at all concerned about him addressing us on the state of the economy. That is pretty much like the weather, we can all see what it is for ourselves.
I’m more interested in him doing some of the things that he has already promised, like cutting his own salary and a lot of other statements in the LA that have never come to pass, like this one from October last year.
In January I pointed this out to the DOEH and I was informed that I only had to pay for the first six months because the 2% increase had not taken hold sufficiently. Last week Ireceived a reminder that they now want me to pay for the last six months of this year.
My question is, can we really believe anything the Premier says?
No surprise that it has been cancelled.
McDaddy Bush and his Band of Blind, Deaf & Dumb Followers have no answers to the problems that we face.
And the answers that are available they do not like because they have no financial benefit to them and their cronies.
Bush addressing the Country of our ecenomic woes is like Fidel addressing the Cuban people on the benefits of a democracy!!!
One plus one equals zero, carry the two!!!
How about addressing the crime problems? We won’t have an economy if we don’t get a handle on crime….
Has anybody seen my pension? I seem to have misplace 10% of my compensation.
It’s a postponement, not a cancellation.
What is wrong with you morons? There was nothing at all controversial or pro-McKeeva in my post – I was merely pointing out CNS’s incorrect use of the English language. The address has not been cancelled, it has been postponed until tomorrow.
CNS: No new date has been set for the radio and TV address.
looks like your hamster fell of the spinning wheel again, Durrr!
ummmm, I only count one moron
my mistake, but the point stands:
"his press officer has said that this is postponed".
Postponed and canceled are not the same thing.
I think the majority of the posters were merely expressing their frustration at your obvious naiivete’… it is a well known government tactic to "Postpone" something long enough that the populace gets bombarded with a new issue and eventually forgets about the old ones…
It was simply wrong.
May I point out your incorrect use of the keyboard? The letter you should have typed is one row down and two keys to the right… DuHHHH.
POOR YOU (11:53)
You may not believe it but they are watching the discussion and the outrage on this CNS forum that has replaced Cayman Net News forum.
They are scrambling for answers and responsive rebuttals for your questions on tomorrow.
First Question to be asked at the Town Hall Meeting
WHY DID YOU INSTRUCT THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO REMOVE THE ‘RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT’ OF THE ACCUSED. (The AG was instruct to do this)
ITS TIME TO March for the repeal of this law it will hurt many families and tare them apart. The Commissioner of RCIP will make a BIG name for himself by incriminating and sentencing people who are innocent while the guilty walk FREE
DEMAND THAT THE PREMIER AND THE CABINET REPEAL THIS LAWIMMEDIATELY BEFORE IT COMES INTO EFFECT.
