Barbados Prime Minister dies of cancer

(CNS): Update Sunday 2:00pm – The prime minister of Barbados, David Thompson, has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 48. The BBC reported that he died at his home in St Philip. He had been ill since March and had travelled several times to New York for treatment. Governor General Sir Clifford Husbands has appointed the attorney general and deputy PM Freundel Stuart to head the government until elections in 2012. Premier McKeeva Bush said, "He always had the best interests of his people at heart. I’m sure that he will be greatly missed not just in Barbados but throughout the region."

Cayman Islands Premier the Hon. McKeeva Bush expressed his sadness at the death of Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson.

Premier Bush said, “It is with great sadness that I’ve learned of the death of Prime Minister David Thompson. He was a good leader and Barbados has lost an outstanding statesman. On behalf of the Government and the people of the Cayman Islands, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the people of Barbados and to Mr. Thompson’s family.

“I was personally acquainted with him and found him to be a man who was passionate about his country. He always had the best interests of his people at heart. I’m sure that he will be greatly missed not just in Barbados but throughout the region. May God bless the people of Barbados and Mr. Thompson’s family as they mourn his untimely passing.”
