Dump workers jobs at risk in face of privatization

| 04/11/2010

(CNS): The employees working at the George Town landfill may lose their jobs once the decision over which private company will take over the management of the dump is made. MLA Clyne Glidden told Cayman 27 that some of the seventy workers at Mount Trashmore may not be needed because of the technical expertise that will be required to process the country’s trash in future. As public sector workers however Glidden said they aregovernment’s responsibility and contracts will be honoured if the company selected does not keep them on. He also said it was government’s intention to take care of any Caymanians employed there. The RFP for addressing the land fill was issued last month and government says the deadline may be extended.

  1. A Shoddy Idea.... says:

I thought people of Cayman wanted Govt to save money and cut the Govt head count?

Now that you got what you want people say now they don’t want it?

I’m lost. It seems no matter what any Govt does or does not do we will not be happy.

We a;; complain about the mountain of trash that we have. Now that there is a solution, (whether we like it or not) it is a solution to a problem that we have had for years and years, we still are not happy???

Do you think you can save money without making any kind of cuts?

If anyone have a better idea please post it with facts (costs, stats, names, the plan)…  Don’t just post to say an idea that the Govt wants to do is not right if you don’t have a solution (that is better) that you can back up with facts.

Do I like the fact that people are going to lose jobs? No

Do I understand that in order to before more effective we need to  make cuts? Yes

      People,

We are at a loss for representation. CG (Cline Glidden) is actually leaving it UP TO THE COMPANY to keep Caymanian employed at the garbage dump instead of him doing HIS JOB as the member responsible for this portfolio.

I mean protecting the livlihood of those already employed there with the stroke of a Pen!

A contract consists of whatever the contents are that you as the primary negotiator include or draft as input.

It seems like CG and the UDP allowed the bidders to draft the governments proposal!

      How Dumb!

Dump workers should be worried about losing their health, and  their time will be cut short due to daily exposure to toxic waste.

  3. Anonymous says:

CG – Is it possible to send the current workers for training now so they (are experts)? We should be working towards bettering their lives instead of throwing them to the dump dogs.

      Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.

There they go again, selling the birthright of the people, and throwing them under the bus!

Mr. Cline Glidden if you as a representative of the people of the Cayman Islands is responsible for overseeing or negotiating this contract with a private company; Had you been sincere about the welfare of Caymanians and their livlihood:-.

YOU WOULD HAVE INSERTED A CLAUSE INTO THE CONTRACT THAT WOULD REQUIRE OR FORCE THE BIDDERS( WHETHER LOCAL OR FOREIGN  ) FOR THE CONTRACT TO KEEP THESE WORKERS EMPLOYED ! That is what educated and astute legislators do for their constituents. I would.

I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH THE BUNCH OF YOU THAT I WANT TO PUKE!:

Does a Garbage dump worker now need an Associates,a Bachelors, Masers, PhD or a to be a Rocket Scientist just to handle the country’s garbage now a days ?

I am forced to say that The UDP members and cabinet are a sickening bunch, You are a WORTHLESS SET of an excuse of elected members. It is a shame, a disgrace and a scandal.

You have lost the confidence of our people NEVER TO BE REGAINED All because of your own selfish, reckless and careless actions. Your obvious first and foremost interest is to accommodate Corporate Cayman while making life difficult and in many cases impossible for the little poor struggling man.

UDP  Its Time to Resign all of you. Just go home.

cool it dude. CG said the big fat government would take care of the workers.

they are home, and there are a lot more of them, just like them, ready to use there homespun ‘wisdom’ to make their living as politicians.

I also think you are talking down to the dump employees when you say they don’t need an education to do their job

    • Pauly Cicero says:

It would probably not be solely a matter of technical knowledge. There will also be a factor of increased technology that will reduce the number of workers needed.

Scary. On the same page we’re reading local banks (Butterfield) have outsourced Caymanian jobs, and now the CI Govt. is outsourcing our jobs. As it has been said in other forums "Stop the insanity!". If we save $1 now by outsourcing, it’ll cost us $10 years down the road. Let’s not let short-term gain cause any more long-term pain, we need to learn to ‘live within our means’ now so we’ll have a future.

I only hope that if it comes down to some of those workers losing their jobs- that the Government will make it their business to see to it that those workers truly would have been replaced my machines/technical expertise and  not work permit holders. The way I see it is, if someone wants the job from you they would do what you ask of them, "if not take it or leave it". Becasue I really dont beleive that the contracts could not stipulate that ‘these men stay on’..

    • ex-pat Eric says:

That is privatization, which is part of Mac’s "Count down to Success". The other part is just making up budget numbers, that helps too!

    so what?

what about the thousands of private sector workers who’s jobs are at risk every day due to competition and recession?……zzzzzz

  7. Anonymous says:

What a crying shame when will this ever stop how many more people need to loose there jobs before something will be done and as for CG  OMG I have heard high school student explain a situtation better than what you did.

You obviously need to set your priorities in order. We got the message loud and clear from 9:07,  and that’s all we’re interested in. this is not a class room it is aforum and everyone’s comments are welcome regardless if there are spelling errors. Many errors occur not because if illiteracy, it is because people are typing so fast while at work they have no time to think, nor to remember how to spell accurately.

Many well prepared comments are coming from individuals who do not work and they have a lot of time to check Wikipedia or Websters.

So don’t shoot the messenger in the foot.  Have enough intelligence to read the message!

maybe people who don’t have time to think, shouldn’t spout.  You know, wait for a less busy time…. think it over a little…. and then spout.
