Elderly cyclist killed on road
(CNS): A 72-year-old man was killed in North Side on Thursday evening (21 April) after being hit by a passing vehicle. According to a police report, the elderly cyclist was struck by a vehicle as he was riding in the vicinity of Hutland Road, North Side, at around 7:35 in the evening. The man received injuries to his head and was described as unresponsive when emergency services arrived. He was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town and treated for his injuries but officials said the man died in the early hours of Friday morning. Police said an investigation is now underway and officers are appealing for witnesses. (Photo Dennie Warren Jr)
Scenes of crime officers and the accident reconstructionist have already attended the scene in North Side and officers from the RCIPS said that anyone who may have been in the area at the time the cyclist was hit that could have witnessed the collision is asked to contact PC 158 GILZEANE at the Traffic Management Unit on 946 6254.

if we keep exchanging drivers licenses from countries where some people have never had the opportunity to sit in a car much less own one we’ll all need buldozers to drive down the roads with in order to be safe much less walk or cycle on the roads.
Its always sad when we have a loss like this which is avoidable…
Here’s one issue though, which is repeatedly ignored –there’s so many cyclists on our roads, and its almost random if they are cycling on the left or right side of the road. A bicycle is a vehicle – its treated as a vehicle under our road laws, which means you must e.g right on the left side of the road, and you must e.g. obey traffic lights etc. This isnt an opinion, its a matter of law. So many times I see cyclists riding against the direction of traffic, thinking that because they can see whats coming, its somehow safe. Wrong ! and Illegal !! Please, obey the laws of the road…..
Please, if you (or loved ones/staff) intend to walk, jog, or cycle after sunset and share the road with vehicles with high rates of closure, it becomes your responsibility to ensure that even the most careless and reckless motorist has an opportunity to see you (or that person) to avoid tragedy. Make it easy for them by wearing light-coloured clothing, reflective surfaces, or a compact LED strobe light (<$5).
My deep condolences to the family. Biking in Cayman is always a gamble, although it should not be.
As someone who likes to bike to work, I can’t understand how the Water Authority can rip up the side/bike lane between Spotts and Grand Harbour and then leave it in total disrepair for months at a time.
It is currently totally unsafe to bike there in rush hour, as not only is it full of loose gravel, but it also has left significant damage to the main road.
How can they show such total disregard for the commuting public and why does the NRA not require them to complete reinstatement in a timely fashion?
I completely agree with you. I am a biker also. Sometimes it is terrifying to ride. I agree with you regarding the Water Authority. No one cares, no one thinks, no one acts, make a complaint and people look at you as if you had two noses.

Im in total agreement with you writer on this one. We in north side have had to put up with this for the last 4 or 5 yeras, since the installment of the pipes along rumpoint drive, as a rider in that district we face the same thing , the roads from Otto’s drive west have not been fixed yet and what little work they do there now is in favor of friends, so figure that one out.
I don’t know who ripped up South Sound Road recently and left it in a mess, but a cyclist is going to be injured or killed because of their selfishness or greed in not repairing the damage they did.
A very sad accident that no doubt will leave both families, the victim and the driver involved in a difficult period. I pray that the victim’s family find closure with the Lord’s help and I also may the driver also seek forgivness and be forgiven. Blessings from the Lemay family for the family and friends of the deceased. Yes, we need some better road for cyclist. Certain aeras need to be designated for cyclist in such a beatiful scenery.

My condolences to the family of the deceased, but is it possible that not everything is the government’s fault. There are sidewalks and pedestrians still get killed. This was an accident. No need to bring politics into the discussion.
Sincerest condolences to the victim and the driver and their families who will be devastated by this tragedy. It does mean something also that the driver did the decent and proper thing by remaining at the scene and taking responsibility. Sympathies to everyone who will feel this loss of this gentleman, who surely touched many lives in the community.

Its sad that we lost a major link of north side in the death of this gentleman, however I have to set the record straight, the vechicle
"DID NOT LEAVE THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT", police arrived on the scene witnesses know that the vechicle did not leave.

This is indeed sad news.
However according to a resident of North Side that i spoke with on saturday morning, the driver of the vehicle did stop….and was very upset???
First of all, my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Instead of going on meaningless and extravagant overseas trips, perhaps the government could spend some of that money on improving the roads for cyclists. How about cycle routes? Holland is a perfect example.
Holland is a great example because people ride bikes in Holland.
