US forces claim to have killed bin Laden
(CNS): The United States government claims to have the body of Osama Bin Laden after operations on the ground in Pakistan President Barack Obama made an announcement at around 10:30pm Sunday evening that US forces had killed the world’s most wanted terrorist and the mastermind behind al-Qaeda. The US president said bin Laden was killed during a firefight with special forces at a compound north of Islamabad. He said that justice had been done and it was "the most significant achievement to date in …effort to defeat al-Qaeda". The US has put its embassies around the world on alert, warning Americans of the possibility of al-Qaeda reprisal attacks.
Bin Laden was believed to be responsible for the 2001 terrorist attack on US soil that triggered the war on terror.
The world’s ‘most wanted man’ had evaded the US and its allies for nearly a decade, despite a $25m bounty on his head.
The US president explained that he had been briefed last August on a possible lead to Bin Laden’s whereabouts.
"It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground," Obama said in his special Sunday night address.

Sandals in the Bin:
…and it seems to me that you spent your days like old sandals in the bin;
never knowing where to run to, when the SEALS rushed in….
And I would have liked to have found you, but you hid so well;
now your compound’s burned out long before, our hatred ever will…
It also saddens me straight to my core to know that people find happiness through one man’s death. Although I do not support bin Laden’s acts, it is utterly immoral and inhumane on all levels to rejoice to the death of a human being, regardless of who they are. “I mourn for the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice the death of one, not even any enemy” – Martin Luther King Jr.
Doesn’t matter who someone is, or what they have done. It’s just out-of-line and disrespectful to rejoice over death.
Disrespectful to whom? The man responsible for thousands of deaths in the US and across the world? Justice has often been accomplished by means of violence. "He who lives by the sword…" and all that.
You’re a pussy.
Are you as vehement against men or countries that provide arms to governments that are known to be committing genocide resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands innocent women and children? Not necessarily pulling the trigger but providing the trigger and training men to pull it. How do you feel about civilian deaths resulting from NATO air strikes in Libya?
Should these men also die by the sword?
Indeed. This two-edged proverb applies to the Americans as well.
Another observation might be "He who lives by the sword must first buy the sword".
I think the Americans prefer the proverb “He who brings a sword to a gunfight usually gets his head blown off by US Navy SEALS.”
How do I feel?
"War! Huh. Good God Y’all. What is it Good For? Absolutely Nothing!"
You’ve described the games governments play. So many lies. So much destruction. But life is, by and large, kill or be killed and when a particularly nasty bit of plasma like Osama Bin Laden is killed (knowing what he’s done and likely to have done), then the world is a better place and I do (in some small way) celebrate that he has been removed from the world in which I live.
You cannot believe that 9/11 was the beginning of the killing.
I do not rejoice in Osama’s death any more than I would have in the murder of Reagan who’s financial aid to military dictatorships facilitated the deaths of hundreds of thousands in Central America alone.
I will rejoice when deadly political or religious "games" of economics end. When governments, religions and their people quit accepting convenient justifications for mass murder of innocent women and children.
Don’t forget the men. Lots of men died too.
I believe the killing started around Genesis 4:8. A couple of guys named Cain and Abel.
Ah… yes. But Reagan never actually ordered the deaths of those hundreds of thousands. At least not that you can prove.
Bin Laden on the other hand… did take credit for the deaths attributed to his planning, funding, recruiting, training and leading members of al Qaeda.
I wasn’t clear…I was really only referring to the first killing in the chain of which the atrocity of 9/11 was part of.
Reagan facilitated the killings in Central America by being aware of them while increasing funding and training to military regimes which were committing the murders. In El Salvador the existence of the death squads were discredited until they had to be acknowledged publicly in the U.S. when 6 American missionary workers were murdered. This has been proven as have numerous other covert operations (of CIA, MI5, SIS, etc.) designed to destabilize groups threatening economic interests. The purpose of these groups does not facilitate the claiming of credit for these operations.
I mourn all the innocent men and women that are victims of these types of atrocities not just the American ones.
But if it is more convenient for you please just continue to consider the initial writer in this comment chain and myself as pussies. You win so now go out and celebrate by buying that gun rack for your truck you’ve have been saving for.
His death saddens me too.
Better if he had been partially suffocated by smoke, then partially burned alive, then forced to jump out of a building 107 floors up, so that he could fall for an eternity to a greasy death-splat on an asphalt roadway, like some of the people he murdered.
Like this guy: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/05/The_Falling_Man.jpg
Well gee…excuuuse meeee!
I mean, godforbidit we show any disrespect to the dead bastard, right?
The mushy-wushy sentiment is fine for Martin and his disciples. But the sixties are over.
As for moi, my only regret – the only thing about Bin Laden's death that saddens me to my core – is that I was not the lucky one to have sighted that scum in the crosshairs and pulled trigger and seen the bastard's cranium explode and his brains splatter. Damn! Talk about happy! A hit like that would have found me high-fiving everybody around me until my hand was sore.
So do tell: why is it immoral and inhumane to celebrate the death of a maggot who in my opinion deserved something far worse than he got?
You say it is immoral. I say the death of that head-wrapped pile of feces is a cause to buy rounds at Happy Hour; one opinion is as good as another.
Hey…keep mourning there old B. As for me – I gonna order up another Greenie!
Bin laden dead too easy
How many of you would agree with me that Osama Bin Laden die too easy for the many people that he ordered his men to kill, boom, boom two shots and he died how about the many people that felt that long pain, surfing so long before they die,but now human rights would say that he died unfairly because he was unarm, the people that he killed was unarm too and he should take to trial, the people who died did not get a trail or maybe the officer that kill him used excessive force because he used two bullet, but yet he used more than excessive force on innocent people, One thing i know last for ever and thats salvation, the seed u sow thats what you reap u live by the gun u die by the gun.
Say what you like about Americans…..at least they get sh*t done! Everybody sits back and complains, but no one wants to get their hands dirty.
PS. No, I am not American either!
The planned murder of an unarmed cripple is not a boost to the "war on terror". In fact the brutal, illegal and arrogant nature of this unilateral operation will only stir up more to the terrorist cause. Showing interviews with Americans thank "god" for what has happened and "god bless the seal that killed Osama" will only make this situation worse.
Bin Laden was a criminal living in Pakistan. He should have been arrested in Pakistan. The difference between terrorists and countries is that countries should operate under law and respect that law. Otherwise we are no better than the terrorist. America’s willingness to murder innocent men, women and many many children through their wanton rocket attacks will fuel the fire of extremism for many years to come.
Arrested in Pakistan??? Why they are harbouring a terriorst. They knew damn well he was there. It concerns me on how many people in Cayman are anti American, yet, you drive American cars, own american products, go on American vacations, emmulate Americans (their music, their culture to name a few), buy american products, EMBRACE AMERICAN MONEY, the list is endless. If you lost a loved one in 9/11 you would be rejoicing on the demise of Bin Laden!!! Good riddance and GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
They had the courage to fight for what they believe in, more then I can say for Cayman..look at the mess we are in now, look at the mess the country is in, no back bone whatsoever!
Misguide and mis directed anger & hatred. Jesus and a surf board. To the truly evil people who arm and equipped all sides and the financial architects and engineers and war profiteers who have created and seeded this conflict thats who we should be declaring war against. Those are the true enemies of human existence. Unfortunately wars have become just another necessary tool to control our inabilty to manage ourselves properly and the resources we have. The Bin laden’s of this world are just pawns in the big game and religion just another angle to engineer it from. Us against them how sick. We need to say a positive prayer or thoughts for the positive things that have come from this situation so we can heal or bring peace to all those who have lost their lives in this terrible conflict, by casting blame on one another is just another manifestation on continuing conflict in ourselves and others.
Wow! A great thought: "We need to say a positive prayer or thoughts for the positive things that have come from this situation…"
I am impressed. You are right about saying a prayer. I am gonna take your advice.
OK, here's my prayer: "Thank God the bastard is dead! Amen."
It is refreshing to see for the most part the thoughtful and intelligent comments here on this extremely controversial issue.
In general I think we all must agree that it is logically a survival requirement of politicians to do the best for their country and people (well in some cases it might just be best for self) often without regard to moral right and wrong. Their people out of convenience will believe even the most shallow, vague and false justifications and ignore unfavorable facts. Throughout the years we have heard and in some cases seen the morally flawed foreign policy of the US. By no means are they the only country involved in global intervention out of self interest. We have even seen false flag operations where a country will sacrifice it’s own people to gain support for a chosen course. And we must realize instances that have become public are merely the tip of an iceberg.
While human rights are often used to legitimize actions the true motivation is often economics. Another very accommodating tool is religion as facts do not lessen fairy-tales.
We must all continue to be skeptical of the guises worn by organized government or religious actions.
As an American I have been confounded by manyof the comments posted. If one reads the foreign press the reaction to Bin Laden’s death has run the gamut from elation to relief, even from the Vatican. The only negative press has come from countries who despise America and have vowed revenge. The Cayman comments reflect a more than subtle distaste for all things American; from the fact that the mission occurred under Obama’s watch to whether killing this monster was necessary at all. Obviously Cayman is an island trying to extricate themselves from American influence but just what is it you’re trying to be? If you are to free yourself from corruption you must make decisions that may involve reprisal. Lose the sanctimony. The island is corrupt at every echelon and you have no means to take out the trash. When the greatest thing that anybody has heard of lately is some vigilantes foiled a caper you must be a frustrated lot!
You are reading far too much into the negative comments and associating them with “Cayman”. Some 120 nationalities are present in Cayman and a great many posts are by expats.
You have to be mature enough to accept that there will be some differences of opinion on this amongst reasonable people. It is far too simplistic to place all negative comment in the category of nations who hate America. You will find that in that great U.S. ally Britain there will be different perspectives. Not everything is as black and white as you appear to think.
Where did you get the idea that Cayman is trying to extricate itself from American influence? Quite to contrary with every passing day we imbibe more and more of that influence.
With all due respect Cayman is not the great melting pot. Although I’ve not surveyed the press of 120 nations the views expressed here are of a far different tone than that of the opinions in the foreign press . The comments here are almost uniformly an island with an ax to grind.
You keep missing the point.Obviously you cannot compare some readers’ blog on CNS with headlines or editorials in the foreign press and, as you have admitted, you have not actually checked out their blogs. The issue is not whether you think Cayman is the great melting pot. You are really naive if you believe that the majority of negative posts are by Caymanians. You simply do not know what you are talking about.
Cayman’s "melting pot" needs another few stirs. Right now you’re not even an emulsion; just oil and water.
Very juvenile and irrelevant to issue. It seems you just can’t get it in your head that it is OK for people to disagree with U.S. policy. Grow up.
It seems to me that you are confusing the views of the world’s press with comments on here by individual posters. They are not the same. The comments on here reflect both support for and criticism of America’s actions, as is to be expected of any society where individuals are free to express their personal views ( at least anonymously on CNS).
Extrapolating the " anti-American " comments of individuals on CNS to conclude that the entire island has an ax to grind is much more likely to be reflective of your intolerance of free speech when it does not co-incide with your views, rather than a prevailing attitude here against America.
I am generally supportive of the action taken, but it’s legality is questionable. I do not expect you to understand this viewpoint, since you clearly believe that if America decides on a course of action, everyone else should agree. I wonder though, how the USA and you would have reacted if a Pakistani special forces unit had entered the US without permission or advising the authorities, killed a number of people, including US citizens, in a city suburb, blown up a helicopter, escaped into another country and then announced with great fanfare this violation of sovereignty to the world?
I am British, Jesus etc. A lot of the criticism here is from (spit) my fellow countrymen who can’t believe that Britain is not in the forefront of everything nowadays, who still feel that Britain won the Second World War without America and Russia and lament the fact that ‘brash Americans” now are the number 1 world power. There’s an occasional poster here called Pit Bull who does a wonderful job of making those of us from the UK with sensible modern views of the world cringe with his neo colonial imperialist condescending claptrap. Try to relax. America is no better than the UK was at being a world power (ie abysmal and misguided and supporting all sorts of horrendous dictators), but many of us are not as anti-American as some of these posters would have you think. The Brits would have LOVED to have nailed Bin Laden and would have done so in the blink of an eye if they could have done. The posts would then have been different, trust me!!
No, noooo, bredren, you have it wrong. Caymanians do not display a "distaste for all things American". Not all tings.
Caymanians love Burger King, Wendy's, Victoria's Secret, Dominoes, Ford, Bayliner, Levis, Dunkin Donuts, Pepsi, Intel, Olive Garden, Yahoo, Mrs Pauls, MasterCard, KFC, DeWalt, Dell, Farmville, Avon, Nike, HBO, facebook, Fruit of the Loom, Gatorade, Target, WalMart, basketball, Subway, Kraft, Madonna, Craftsman, GE, Kellogg, CNN, Google, Miami, Whirlpool, the Internet…and..well…you get the idea.
It can be said that Caymanians love a lot more American stuff than they do Caymanian stuff.
Oh…darn! I almost forgot one thing totally American that is an object of extreme veneration and veritable worship in deese yah islands: De nice green Yankee dallah!
Stop giving Obama credit. I am pretty sure that this was something that has been worked on and planned for a looooong time, and that Obama probably wasn’t even clued in on all the details until the very end when they needed him to give the go ahead.
Next time you travel through the USA and you see some service men and women in the airports, you may want to stop and thank them, applaud them, or even offer them your seat or buy them a meal.
Those are the people who put their lifes on the line every day! Not Obama. He is just another one who talks the talk.
1. Obama shouldn’t get credit for something that he didn’t do. When he put his life on the line then he can claim credit. I still think that all the world leaders that have problems with each other should duke it out in a boxing ring by themselves. Why should innocent people have to suffer?
2. Osama has been "dead" countless times. I want proof. Show me the pictures of the dead body and then I will believe it. That throwing in the sea thing is getting me suspicious. Nothing against Obama but I’m not too trusting of a person especially when politicians are involved.
They say if he was buried on land, a shrine would had been made to honor him.
1. If the mission had been botched no doubt you would have blamed Obama. Political leaders take both credit and blame where they are not directly responsible. **When*** he put his life on the line? Obama put his life on the line from the day he announced his candidacy for the Presidency. This is true with any President that threatens the status quo but much more so when he is African American. This was not a mere personal issue between Obama and bin Laden so I don’t understand your last comment.
2. Well, I don’t hear Al Qaeda claiming that he is alive (like they did not previous occasions). Their strange silence speaks volumes. If they did show you pictures of the dead body would you necessarily be able to identify him? Did you know him that well? Someone else has already made the point why a land burial would not have been a good option. It would become a shrine for every radical Muslim.
Please think before your post.
"This is true with any President that threatens the status quo but much more so when he is African American."
Can anyone say anything about Obama without someone pulling the racism card? sheesh
I wouldn’t have criticized him if he botched the attempt. I don’t pay attention to much of anything that Obama says or does.
I’m not the only person that find the quick burial at sea strange and maybe I’m a cynic but because some politician says so just doesn’t cut it with me. I believe that people are not to be trusted till they prove they are worthy of my trust.
"Did you know him that well? "
Were you there when they shot Osama?
In reponse to your ignorant statement that Obama can only claim credit when he puts his life on the lineI made the relevant point that It is a simple fact that is life is already on the line. That’s not pulling a racism card, it’s telling it like it is.
You are being disingenuous. Given your attitude I don’t believe that you would not have assigned blame to him had the mission had failed. He would have been termed another Jimmy Carter (Iran hostage crisis) and you know it.
“Were you there when they shot Osama?”.
This takes the prize in the stupid comment/question category. No, I wasn’t and I didn’t have to be. I also wasn’t present for almost all significant events in history but that does not mean that I don’t believe they happened or that I require that they be personally proved to me. My point about a demanding a photo is (1) it is unnecessary as no one is claiming he is alive; (2) it would not necessarily prove anything since no doubt conspiracy theorists like yourself would say that it was someone made up to look like bin Laden. There is no end to proving when it comes to people like you. Further, it would have the potential of being inflammatory.
What a violation of human rights. He should have been brought to court and tried by an international criminal court.
Or that’s what half of you wimpy left wing Europeans will be weeping about tonight.
Ummmm… Is it possible to have another bank holiday??? I mean at least he got to see the royal wedding before he went out!
If you check your diary OBL was killed on the day Israelis remembered the Holocaust – not the sort of holiday you had in mind?
I must say I’m quite relieved by this news but I’m also wary of retaliation. Pres Obama hands down is possibly the greatest speaker of this century. I watched the full speech he gave this morning, it was very good. I want to point out specifically the demeanor in which the speech was delivered. It was somber, it was firm, it was clear, concise and honorable. There were no smirks, catch phrases or interjected commentary. There was no slogan, no “don’t mess with America” messages (at least not overtly). It was free of taunting, condescension and overall offense.
I got the impression that this man is in full control and he knows what he’s doing and he does it supremely well.
McKeewa will you please take a page out of his book?
Sounds like a good, clean and well justified kill but all it has done is made OBL another martyr for Islam – he’s going to be more of a pain in the a**e dead than he was alive.
Ah…you naive Americans. Just another example of "American Foreign Policies", where they covertly go into another country to try and take, take, take any resources they can!!!
They did this entire operation without Pakistan Government knowledge…..
How quickly you forget (or just don’t bother to educate yourselves) countries like Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, Iraq, Afganistan and most recently Libya.
What is really behind it all? Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions and search out the answers….as the previous stated….smoke and mirrors.
Ah, you ignorant fool.
The "knowledge" you speak of was how the Pakistan government hid this vile piece of fanatical garbage for years.
The US should cut all aid to Pakistan immediately, and bring all our troops home from hell with the lid off. (the entire Mideast)
Amen to that – the SoB operated with the full cooperation of our ‘allies’ in the fight against terrorism.
We all know this but it must be said the USA needs to stop being so active in other countries affairs . Osama and his buddies where upset because of foreign policy. The USA was given the problem from the British what to do with Israel. So the US Gives the Israeili’s guns and money to force the Palestinians into Ghetto’s to carve out Israel. How would you feel if Britain bought a huge boat loads of Hatians or some different ethnic populace to Grand Cayman and dropped them off? Then with the help of the USA Cayman is divided 1/2 or 2/3 is for Hatian immigrants or some other nationality. You say your not going going to put up with that and you pick up arms (or rocks because you don’t have guns) only to be brutaly put down by the people who just took your land with the help of Britian or the USA. I have no Sympathy for terrorists because of how they get their message across. However, when people who are feeling opressed because theydo not have the technology, money or manpower to take a superpower head on THEY WILL ALWAYS try something underhanded. The USA must not be biased or they will create these situations. Then , after they are paid back by people who feel slighted due to US foreign policy they try to even the score all in the name of Democracy? If Democracy and standing up for people and the little guy is what it is all about what about Darfur, Zimbabwe etc where is would be much easier to take out the Killers who cause so much despair? I think the responsible thing for the USA to do is to set an example by not having double standards. They can’t change the world and when they try someone with always feel slighted therefore posing a risk to security. When it suited the USA they backed Osama against the Russians. Then he turns around and has a problem with US foreign policy and Bill Clinton tries to take him out sending him underground. How about lving by your word and not creating enemies of the state. It seemed that Half of the USA was surprised that people hated the USA so much that they could do something like that. Why walk up to a beehive an hit it with a stick. Certainly there must be more diplomacy than that. Seeing people jumping out of the Trade Centers was heart breaking and just plain wrong. We were mad about it no doubt. The Arabs are mad too. The politicians in any country are really OUR worse enemies….It is whatever suits them with no regard for the long lasting implications of the people. So now ths USA is out of money for many reasons. Creating situations they must now fix. Hence FATCA for example. Did they thick far enough in advance that possibly forign investment could pull out of the USA making it worse. No, it is whatever suits them….just as it is whatever suits this government.Politicians really are theworse sort of people as a whole.
Obama killed Osama – Public enemy #1
I just love Obama.
Obama just gave the go-ahead; the true heroes were those who were there to take him out. And if it wasn’t for President Bush, there may have never been an operation against Osama in the first place, because I actually believe Obama may have just made a declaration condemning the terrorist act – and that’s it! He speaks so much about leaving Afghanistan, I don’t think he would had entered Afghanistan in the first place to pursue Bin Laden. I give more creditto the special forces at the ground level.
The ugly descent into partisan politics. Give credit where credit is due. Even President Bush was gracious enough to congratulate President Obama. President Obama as Commander in Chief had to make a tactical decision as to how to engage them enemy. He chose wisely. Had the mission been botched you would have been among the first to blame it on Obama.
God Bless America!!
Not a moment too soon. Sorry i could not have been there to see it happen. This man has the blood of so many on his hands, and ironically he has killed more muslims than any other religion/nationality.
Anybody who questions why people cheer the death of a man who straps bombs onto children needs their head examined.
God has not blessed America. It is cursed for its warmongering, lying ways of hell. It is a shame that the true american patriots will have to suffer, but they willl prevail.
Jeremiah Wright, what are you doing on here?
This is another “Smoke in Mirrors” trick!!!! More Brainwash!!!
According to an artilce on Fox News on 26 Dec 2001, Bin Laden died in Pakistan as result of illness.
How can he die again????
I hope for your sake you are kidding, but if not, your first mistake was watching and then believing what fox news said in the first place. They are a swirling toiletbowl of caca del toro, to put it nicely. McKeeva is supposedly coming up with his own version, it is called udptv and the prescription comes with a free glass of kool-aid. (Free advice; you would be better off eating the glass itself.) Aya freakin caramba, and in case you did not notice, mission finally (8 yrs. later) accomplished. Now let’s get on to the war crimes commited by ex-president Bush and company. Care to have a discussion on that one? Osama Bin Laden’s demise is long overdue but those whose cap fit must wear it and barbarism is barbarism no matter what side of the Atlantic it is perpetrated on and/or by, nuff said. God bless the souls of all the innocents. Father Abraham had many sons…..
Factually, Osama Bin Ladin was NOT the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks upon the U.S.. Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was the mastermind.
After the 9/11 attack Osama was interviewed and said it was not him who planned and carried out this deed, but he was in support of the person that did.
He went on to explain there were three significant reasons for those actions.
#1 – The 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. (an oil rich, Islamic country)
#2 – The building of U.S. military bases on Islamic Holy land, Saudi Arabia (an oil rich, Islamic country), where Mecca is Islam’s holiest city.
#3 – The continual siding of the U.S. with Israel, ignoring the rights of the indigenous Palestinians, regardless of the Israeli’s claim of Biblical land rights, since the Old Testament was written by the Jews, themselves. Which, in itself, negates any "Holy Book" claims.
In 2011, the British news agency, the Telegraph, received leaked documents regarding the Guantanamo Bay interrogations of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. The documents cited Khalid saying that, if Osama Bin Laden is captured or killed by the Coalition of the Willing, an Al-Qaeda sleeper cell will detonate a "weapon of mass destruction" in a "secret location" in Europe, and promised it would be "a nuclear hellstorm".
(Copied from "Wikipedia")
Readers please note: this information is not an opinion of mine, only facts. If in doubt, research the same for yourself. I’m only trying to educate the misinformed.
You have me confused. You say that Ben Ladin supported those who carried out the 9/11 attacks and the #1 reason is “The 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq”. The 9/11 attacks took place in 2001……
Apologies for the error. Trying to write from memories of ten years ago did not work perfectly.
It wa the U.S. lead SANCTIONS against Iraq, not the invasion (Kuwait), as one of Osama’s quoted reasons.
Sorry for the "confused" readers. The error was minor.
If you look at #1 you will note that it should have read: Economic War (sanctions) instead of Invasion (military war). The simple truth is: People die by both types of wars, one dies from a lack of food available, starvation, the other by bullets/bombs. Pretty much the same in the eyes of those affected.
To the contrary, that was a fundamental error and as it was your #1 point unravelled your claim to a superior knowledge of the facts. Your explanation is ridiculous.
You feel better now? Got that off your chest?
Wowee, give yourself a "brownie point"!
I notice you never argued the validity of anything else that was written. What happened? Can’t find anymore "errors"?
Looking forward to your "ridiculous" reply.
Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden claimed responsibility for the attacks. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror, invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists, and by enacting the USA PATRIOT Act. Many other countries also strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. Some American stock exchanges stayed closed for the rest of the week following the attack, and posted enormous losses upon reopening, especially in the airline and insurance industries. The destruction of billions of dollars’ worth of office space caused serious damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan
Sorry don’t know where you got the information but the above is from Wikipedia
To all the “# 1 reason” nit-pickers, military war (armies) or economic war (sanctions), both result in the loss of lives, either through bullets or starvation. The results are similar.
As far as OBL afterwards claiming “responsibility”, it appears as though, later, he wanted to take full credit for the attack, that in his perverse mind, was deemed as an acceptable response to the actions of the United States. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed did confess to the planning and execution of the 9/11 terror attack after capture. Your personal opinion of who did/didn’t is exactly that – your personal opinion. None of us were there and we can only quote what we have read.
FYI – Only the last sentence (the threat from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed) of the “letter” was “copied” from Wikipedia.
Um….in response to your #1 theory. The 9/11 attack took place in 2001 and according to my teachers in primary school 3 comes after 1 which means 9/11 occured way before (#1 – The 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.) SO….explain how this could be one of his reasons for orchestrating this horrible, infiltrated crime which happened after the fact??
You seem to have got #1 all mixed up. The Iraq invasion in 2003 was inspired by 9/11/2001 and not the other way around as should be obvious from the dates. So much for your “facts”.
Following your logic, there are no holy books since they are all written by human intermediaries. Since the Koran was written by Mohammed the founder of Islam this “in itself negates any Holy book claim”.
If I were an evil terrorist bastard I would also probably try to intimidate my enemies by threats of nuclear destruction too.
Since you are quoting Wikpedia, how did you miss where Wikipedia says that, following initial denials, bin Laden had accepted responsibilty fo the 9/11 attack?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Osama_bin_Laden_video
biker, you are full of crap…
Ha! One can only laugh at your ignorance!
Care to write down exactly what he wrote is crap (history!) or were you just mixed up and didn’t fully comprehend what you read? We’ll understand, if that’s so.
"Biker" did not write his opinion, he only copied what history had recorded.
If you can read, check it out for yourself. Heard of a "Library or a computer? They’re both great for research. (Research means looking for factual information, by the way)
Looks like maybe the only point to be taken from this now historical chain of events is "If you leave them alone, chances are very good they’ll leave you alone".
How juvenile! Name calling. Are you ten years old?
Contribute to the dialog intelligently or shut up (and grow up).
If you got your button pushed, too bad.
Can’t take the truth?
Its sort of ironic that they buried him at sea. He needed a bath for a long time… Now that dirty beard can soak for awhile…
Surprise!!! He was never in a cave, but a million dollar mansion with his wife and family.
Even the sharks spat him out, apparently, and now the animal rights activists are bringing a case against the US Navy Seals for, ‘inflicting gratuitous and heartless gastronomic cruelty on the oceans’ top predators.’
I guess he had nine lives! Since this is about the ninth time the news have reported that he is dead.
Finally.
The us invaded/manipulated elections/assassinated political leaders etc etc in more than 65 countries after WWII.
Check Carlyle/Bush/Laden on the internet and discover they invest together.
Bin Laden was a paid soldier for the us in the time of russia/afghanistan.
Prescott bush/IG farben built the dachau concentration camp, that’s why it took 5 years to shut them down. It is called ROI.
Killing bin laden is certainly not the end. it is more like a new beginning.
They are all criminals . . . . . .
Absolutely disgusted by CNN last night with it’s reiteration ‘Osama is dead’ claiming the trophy of achievement in killing someone. No wonder the United States has such a hard time internationally with it’s acceptance as a society when portrayed like this. There’s a way to conduct oneself with issues as such but this isn’t it. . .
The chanting of "USA USA USA" at the baseball game immediately afterwards showed the type of barbaric triumphalism of many of the US population which has helped terrorist recruitment worldwide. It was disgusting and made me glad I am not an American.
Yes, I admit it was a little unsavoury. It’s difficult to understand how it’s possible to condemn the whole of the Arab world for the chanting and cheering that was demonstrated in many mid-east cities following the 9-11 attacks (and which should be denounced as barbaric, disgusting and inhuman) and not condemn the cheering that went on at Ground Zero, the White House and right across America following the news that the man was dead. He was an evil person, who needed to be ended, and it is right that he has been executed (I don’t believe the US would ever have tried to take him alive – the risks for hostage taking would have been too high). We should give thanks that a difficult job has been done well by a group of men who no-one will ever know, and move on. These scenes of triumph can only serve to hurt the west when they are played throughout the Arab world and help to turn Bin Laden into a martyr.
I too am glad.
If that was disgusting to you, what was the scene at the World Trade Center in 2001? I think America is glad you’re not American as well.
And it is because you are not American why you would not understand. Have a close relative killed during September 11th and the tune of your song would probably change. The ignorance of some…
Would this person also have rejected the celebrations on V-E or V-J days?
Wow. I’m surprised to hear anyone say this. This was a man who was responsible for acts of terrorism that killed thousands of men, women, and children not only in the United States, but around the world. His death was not only good for the United States, but for the entire world. Cayman, as a world financial centre, is safer because of this. Let us all hope and pray that the treat of terrorism decreases. The death of another human is not something I would normally wish for, but this needed to happen. Everyone should be celebrating the most significant strike against terrorism, not only in the US, but everywhere. Good will always eventually triumph over evil.
I am glad that you aren’t an American either. Over 3,000 innocent lives were loss on Sept 11 2001. Do you remember the coverage, people jumping from the trade center away from the fire to their death. The plane carrying innocent children on a field trip heading for Catalina, crashing into the Pentagon. The man who masterminded Sept 11 was killed. GREAT, Americans have a right to chant USA USA. Just because they chanted USA doesn’t show them being barbaric. The US isn’t the only country that is guilty of helping terrorist recruitment worldwide. England is as guilty to name one!!!
A million USA USA USA chants for today!!!!
Since 9/11 there have been almost 20,000 people killed as a result of America’s war in Afghanistan, including nearly 9,000 civilians and 2,200 US and coalition troops. In Iraq the figures are 900,000 people killed, nearly 865,000 civilians and 5,700 US and coalition troops. I can’t vouch for the absolute accuracy of these numbers, but some basic research indicates they are in the ballpark.
"Americans have a right to chant USA, USA" – and non-Americans have a right to question why. Chanting might not indicate barbarism, but orchestrating the deaths of 900,000 plus in revenge for 3000 US dead just might.
Can see it now… Headline: "Donald Trump petitions for Osama’s death Certificate"
Best news I have heard in a long time. Although I do not wish death on anyone like this, this was something that needed to be done.
