Shot fired in weekend robbery
(CNS): Updated Sunday 2pm – Police have now confirmed that a lone gunman armed with a handgun fired a single shot during a robbery in downtown George Town on Saturday night. Police say they arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of robbery shortly after the incident. Uncle Clem’s grocery store off Mary Street in downtown George Town was robbed at around 8:50pm last night (20 August) when a masked gunman entered the shop just before closing and fired a shot into the ceiling. He then grabbed the cash bag from the register containing an undisclosed sum of cash and fled from the store. The robber was described as being 5’ 11” tall, black complexion and slim build, wearing jeans and no shirt with his face covered. (Photo Dennie Warren Jr)
Police, said that K9 and scenes of crime officers attended the location and conducted extensive enquires and a short time later a 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery close to Hammerheads bar on the waterfront. The man remains in police custodyand police are asking for any witnesses to the incident, in which no was hurt, to come forward.
The robbery is the second of the weekend to take place in the Mary Street area. An attempted robbery was made by a masked armed man on Solomon’s Grocery store on Friday evening. On that occasion the owner barred the suspect’s entry to the store.
The RCIPS is asking people who were in the area at the time and observed anything or have any information that can assist the police to please call 949 4222 or any of the police stations or 800TIPS (8477) or RCIPS hotline at 949 7777.

Places like this need to start offering free coffee and donuts to police officers on Duty. This comment not meant to bash the police…they may frequent these places on there breaks and act as a deterent. Criminals will never know when the cops may show up…otherwise why would the cops be in these areas while on duty?
This is what is happening while our leaders play tit-for-tat and slinging mud at each other instead of trying to work together to solve our social ills!!

I can't believe someone would knock over Uncle Clems, the owners probably barely scrape by as it is. Lovely staff in there you know, the fruit is fantastic and bloody cheap too.

A 52 years old man? XXXX I have seen some 25 years old still live with their mothers and hasslig them for cigarette money and food. This is even causing domestic disputes. I wonder what these "old bodies" think . XXXXX
The police is not being vigilient in such things, they are only chasing after poor caymanians trying to make a living by catching too fish. You will see them running the beach looking to lock up caymanians trying to get a meal for their family to eat. Robberies, the police ain,t concerned. Kill a a man they ain't concerned. Kill a wild chicken for your dinner and a tourist calls and say oh, the poor little wild chicken, and the police will lock you up for it. Draw a fish pot and get two fish, foreigner call and say they see you fishing. Helicopter waste gas, police sirene and jet fly ova.
Solve the killings and missing persons crimes, the robberies that is what need to be done on this Island..
Is it that people are not watching their business anymore. Why are they keeping money for robbers to get. You should be keeping the till clean with only coins, and a tray full with news paper underneath. Some of you either deserve to be robbed, or you are killing insurance.

Remove large bills and arrange invest in a safe that no one can open except owners or managers with a slit and signage Explaining and on front door like some do now and have someone remove big bills out of premises as many times a day as needed. Do notcompromise your staff"s safety. It would be nice to give them groceries; slower to run easier to spot. It is high time with alarms connected to a control center with armed prsonnel to respond. could be combined with the cctv ? Allow store owners at leat to defend themselves. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire, because right now wanna be robbers, robbers with a plan. Too many bank robberies. Ink mixed with money to explode, there are so many things out there that could be used. Just change the law or amendit. Oh ! I see a problem there !? !,000,000 excuses why we coulnd. If you are going to catch a thief you have to start thinking like one. I still say that it would cost less money to do stake outs with radio with approved citizen that could work part time (retired fit person) and pay them. Boost the economy and start catching and prosecuting the thieves properly.
