Scammers come up with yet more cons

| 05/02/2012

Online-Fraud-Reports.jpg(CNS): Officers from the RCIPS Financial Crimes Unit are issuing more warnings about internet and telephone scams. On Friday the police said they had received numerous reports from members of the public who stated that they had received telephone calls from an individual who purported to be calling on behalf of Microsoft Virginia. The caller told the victims that they had downloaded viruses and offered to assist them in removing the viruses for a fee which could be paid in instalments from $100 – $300. Not surprisingly, the calls were bogus and Microsoft has confirmed that no one from the company would contact customers on the phone.

Just one in the latest long line of scams, the public is being urged by the FCU not to give out their credit card/bank details or e-mail addresses over the telephone.

Anyone who requires further information in order to protect themselves from becoming a victim of this scam should contact the Financial Crimes Unit  at 949-8797.

I got this call as well from a guy with a very heavy indian accent.  The information he referenced for my account could have only come from LIME.  All my friends who have a LIME account also got the call to the family member who owns the LIME internet account.  Either LIME has had a security breach or they have sold thier customer information.  Upon calling LIME to confront them about this numerous people I know have been brushed off.  Either way I'm not happy or surprised by the poor quality of LIME service.

I was a victim of that scam on thursday afternoon. A man with an Indian accent called my home to alert me that I had received an email with a virus and because of the size of the email it was truncated and  would damage my computer,   they were advising me that they could fix it. I told him that I had an expert that could fix my computer and gave him a few choice words and hung up.

How dare these perverts to assume that every one is as embeciled as they are. I'm glad to know that I was not the only one to receive that call.

How were you a 'victim' if you didn't give out your details and get your card compromised?

There's an email people should also watch out for.

It comes in the form a fake FedEx missed collection notification with an attachment that apparently contains a virus.

It's doing the rounds of the UK right now.
