Public warned over illegal tipping
(CNS): The Department of Environmental Health is warning people not to dump their waste on government property and asking the public to report instances of fly-tipping when they see it. The department said that teams from the solid waste section had to deal with the on-going littering and illegal dumping of waste at various Crown properties throughout the island, especially in West Bay and George Town. Officials said that under the Litter Law anyone who leaves any litter public place is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine of five hundred dollars or to imprisonment for six months.
“Littering and illegal dumping of waste is unsightly, defaces property, encourages pests, creates nuisances, affects cleanliness, poses risk to public health, and shows a lack of civic pride in the community,” said Roydell Carter, Director of Environmental Health. “Persons involved are strongly urged to immediately stop such practices and to take the waste to the George Town landfill for proper disposal”.
Residents should report incidents of littering or the illegal dumping of waste in their community to the Police or the DEH. “It’s vital that reliable information is reported to enable appropriate actions to tackle this serious problem. There is absolutely no need for littering or illegal dumping in these islands,” he added.
The George Town Landfill is opened 6 days a week (Mon to Sat) from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Also, the public drop-off facility at the landfill remains open 24 hours a day, every day. The public can contact the Police by telephone on 949-4222 or call the DEH at 949-6696 to make a complaint or to obtain further information.

Words can not explain how disgusted I am over this. People can’t even go to the dump in town to dump their garbage what makes you think they are going to drive all the way up to Midland Acres to dump their crap. We have to clean up the garbage in Midland Acres and contact the owner and put up a fence. Since Doh does not want to get involved. Enough is enough!
I guess people are getting rid of their old stuff so they can be given new items when election voting comes around next time. Home Building/Nation Building.
could they pleeeeese provide me with an 2 extra boxes of condoms… i lost both during the 2009 recession
My Opinion: this is probably done by expats or young caymanians. When I moved here 20 years ago, keeping the island clean was one of the first things I was educated on. Back then people wouldn't even allow those big trucks to go around spilling landfill or whatever they carry; I guess a significant amount of the current population doesn't care about this country enough…
Slightly off topic (way to the left of field actually)
This island has a signficant problem with waste. It is not equiped for recycling, nor (apparently) inclined to consider it outside the terms of the ForCayman Alliance.
I don't really care about that, my problem is eggs.
Until recently, I was able to purchase eggs privately through local supplier. The eggs were usually fabulously fresh and tasty. But the best thing about this supplier was that, every week, I would get a dozen eggs in a recycled box, in return for my empty egg box. Nothing, apart from the shells, went in to the trash, and theshells did not go to Trashmore.
Unfortunately, my arrangement with the excellent supplier referred to above has ended, so now I try always to buy eggs from local producers from our 3 main supermarkets. Mainly, they are good quality. However they always come in expanded polystyrene boxes, with no option for recycling / reusing those boxes.
This is tragic; expanded polystyrene is unbelievably difficult to dispose of, it does not decompost in a landfill at any useful/sustainable half life, and I am not really keen to continue to put egg boxes in the trash if there is a recyclable alternative, even if the eggs are not local and not so fresh. As it happens, there is such an alternative, available in cardboard boxes made from recycled paper for about CI$2 less than the local farmers, so that is what I will buy until the local producers adopt recyclable boxes.
I am really sorry about this, and a dozen eggs a week is not much, but, whether you believe in global warming or not, every single expanded polystyrene container, meat flat, egg box, coffee cup, milkshake, pre-page vegetable on this island is adding to the height of Trashmore. Not good.
Clearly, and for obvious reasons, our government (whatever shade) is not going to introduce anti-packaging measures for the sake of our environment, but we can vote with our shopping.
You can get decomposable cellulose products; they are a bit more expensive but wouldn't it be marvellous if our eminence grise of Camana Bay promoted them not his bloody styrofoam cups? Then we would, perhaps, be able to wish him well.
people are just lazy, the landfill is open 24 hours just take it there
Dumping or leaving your personal trash anywhere is just complete ignorance!!!! and that's all i gotta say about that
Someone dumped a mattress on south sound on the right side going towards town where there is still undeveloped land…looks real nice
There's also a couple of appliances dumped on Fairbanks road near to the entrance to Secret Garden, looks lovely too (not). Some people are just pigs.
There are a whole load of campaign posters and signs dumped on the island next to Harbour House, that one actually made me laugh "don't stop the progress" right enough!!!!
Laughable. No one has ever been prosecuted. Another example of the lawlessness we face every day.
This is what makes me laugh when I hear protests about the dump moving to BT. All over the island there are mini-dumps in empty fields, beside houses, with derelict vehicles on almost every street. People of Cayman should be ashamed of the way they have treated this island and continue to treat it. Earth Day clean-up is a joke as it has turned into a post Easter campout clean-up. When you have so many people refusing to pay their garbage bill and government getting rid of it to placate them it says something about them…..mainly that they are pigs with no conscience.
Report: There is illegal dumping taking place behind Midland Acres. I drove by the road leading the quarry and saw construction rubbish dumped in the wetlands alongside the road. Maybe they can have some signs put up there. The waste management facility has not even moved up there yet, and they are dumping in the area. CNs, please have someone look into this.
With all due respect, why don't YOU have someone look into this matter.
PLEASE take it upon yourself to be guardian of our precious island. If you lead others may follow.
I wish you the very best in your efforts to keep our country litter free.
Press on!
If the previous poster is an expat on a work permit, he is in danger of having his/her work permit pulled if he/she rats out a Caymanian.
I have 2 parcels of land in Northward and the residents have taken it over, dumping their refuse on it. I plan to hire a front end loader and dump it right in their driveways, so they will have a pleasant surprise when they come home.
10.55 I've already informed Env. Health about this particular dump behind Midland Acres, and they've come out to assess it, but I guess they did nothing because it's private land. So it goes.
