2013 Election Day and other holidays confirmed
(CNS): Although officials have not yet confirmed that Cayman will be marking the Queen’s Birthday on Monday 17 June 2013, all of the other public holidays next year, including the election day, been officially released by government. January, May and December all have two holidays each as both New Year’s Day and National Heroes Day fall in January as usual. Likewise December has Christmas Day and Boxing Day, both occurring midweek. In addition to Discovery Day on 20 May, Cayman has a public holiday for its much anticipated general elections on Wednesday, 22 May. A list was recently gazetted under an Elections Office notification as expected holidays.
Corporate Manager in the Deputy Governor’s Office, Christine Wright, has confirmed all holidays for next year barring the Queen’s birthday, which is still awaiting the nod from the UK. The Queen’s Birthday is celebrated in Cayman with a public holiday in June on the Monday following the Saturday designated as the official observance in the UK, Wright explained.
The public holidays in 2013 are:
Tuesday, I January: New Year’s Day
Monday, 28 January: National Heroes’ Day
Wednesday, 13 February: Ash Wednesday
Friday, 29 March: Good Friday
Monday, 1 April: Easter Monday
Monday, 20 May: Discovery Day
Wednesday, 22 May: Elections Day
Monday, 17 June: Queen’s Birthday (to be confirmed)
Monday, 1 July: Constitution Day
Monday, 11 November: Remembrance Day

They are not encouraging you to vote by having the Monday before election Wednesday as a holiday. Take the Tuesday off and you have a five day holiday stretch!

I'm just glad for the day offs to catch up on my soaps.
I think that it is an excellent idea too celebrate St. Andrew's Day with public holiday.
I would like to see Cayman firmly establish its own Thanksgivingday on 30th November each year to observe and give thanks for sparing our lives each year, and mostly during Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Paloma.
We need to STOP adopting other people's cultures and practices where they are not appropriate for our own, and create our own.
Not too many of us are decendants of the natives who settled in the New World (USA) and ate pumkins and Turkey in celebration of their safe passage across the waters BUT there are many of us Caymanians and others alike, done like our ancestors, who stayed behind to battle the storms, survived the storms, cleaned-up after the storms, prayed during the storms, cried during and after the storms, comforted during and after the storms, and provided shelter during and after the storms.
Cayman, where has our pride and nationalism gone for our very own way of life???????????
Whilst I appreciate the efforts made by the Dec 1st celebation last year, I am making this appeal for an annual PUBLIC HOLIDAY, permanently set for NOV 30th.

Why not get as many public holidays as France or Greece. They seem to have it right!

National Heroes Day – providing for the declaration of persons who have rendered exceptional service as national heroes
Discovery Day – commemorates the discovery of the Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman by Christopher Columbus in 1503.
Constitution Day – commemorates the first constitution of the Cayman Islands, written when the islands were still a dependency of Jamaica.
Queens Birthday – Cayman is an overseas teritory of the UK.
Remembrance Day – observed by commonwealth countries to remember those who fell during WWI.
Election Day – for an election, in Cayman.
Add the Christian holidays (Cayman is a christian country) and all the holidays are specific to Cayman.
So where exactly is the adoption of other peoples cultures (where it has no impact on Cayman)?
Or we could save the economy gown downhill even faster by not having to copy the Americans and not having an additional public holiday.
Face it: culturally the CI is like the southern U.S. in its religions (most started by white american men in the 1800s) and commerce (BK on the harbour). Even its most important post office proudly displays a painting with the american flag higher than ours–something you won't see in any public building anywhere else in the world. So why not take on their holidays as well?
The longest established church is the Presbyterian church started in 1846 by a Scottish missionary.

I too agree that Cayman should celebrate Thanksgiving Day for at least next year.
That would be the day after elections when we take away the power that Mackeeva and the UDP have used against the people…
As far as I see it, because the Cayman Islands are so close to the US is the main reason that we adapt many of their "habits" including celebrating Thanksgiving. I always claim that it is not our holiday!
