PPM calls for action

| 04/11/2012

Alden.jpg(CNS): In the face of the premier’s latest spat with the UK, which the opposition has described as bordering on “treacherous”, the PPM has called for action. Warning that Premier McKeeva Bush’s behaviour could bring down direct rule to the Cayman Islands from the UK, the opposition said the business community as well as the public at large needed to loudly condemn the premier’s behaviour and use the power of public opinion to make him see his actions are not welcome. Following the defiant behaviour of Bush in face of pressure from the UK to honour his commitments, the PPM says he is deliberately pushing the British to their limits in order to provoke an unnecessary crisis to distract away from his unpopularity.

“We have only to consider what has happened in the Turks and Caicos Islands to understand what the need for intervention by the UK Government will do to investor confidence in Cayman,” the opposition party said in an official statement released on Saturday. “The UK’s suspension of the constitution of the Turks and Caicos Islands derailed its financial industry, destroyed small businesses and ruined the quality of life of its residents and citizens.”

The statement pointed to the fact that it was not just the UK that was losing lost patience.

“We can all see without help from the UK what Mr Bush has been doing. But now his foolishness is drawing the country into a completely unnecessary crisis, with no upside for Cayman, and a very deep downside. He is playing brinkmanship with the stability and economic fortunes of the country and in doing so he is inciting the UK to take actions which ought not to be necessary. This is more than merely irresponsible, it borders on treacherous,” the PPM said.

The opposition described Bush’s sabre rattling with the UK as a “desperate last measure” to attract votes and detract away from the lamentable record of mismanagement.

“The premier’s determination to sign on to the CHEC project in defiance of the obvious principles of good governance set out in the FFR (which he signed last year) is inexplicable and irrational — except on the basis that he has lost his senses altogether, or that there is something in it for him personally," the PPM stated. “It cannot be that he sees an advantage for Cayman in having a new China city right where passengers disembark, competing with our existing businesses; it cannot be that he sees an advantage for Cayman in having an army of Chinese workers to construct the facility while thousands of Caymanians remain unemployed."

Urging everyone to make their opposition to his behaviour widely known and calling for a mass demonstration, the PPM, which is in the process of re-grouping ahead of the May elections, said it was time for right thinking men and women to stand up and condemn the “madness” because Bush will react to public opinion.

    All a bunch of donkeys!

Ezzardvoted for the 2009 budget which launched htis final crash; PPM geniuses were biggest disappointment in history (since Roy); and NONE of them deserve to return to office.

The Referendum Law is in place and tested – let the people rule by consensus!

It would only take 2 minutes at a poll booth outside the supermarket each weekend for us all to decide on the week's business!!

    REALLY,

Alden, I listened to you a decade ago when MAC was handing out favors and status like Halloween candy. I thought it was wrong. You said govt. would help those of us who were honest if you came into office. It was a lie. You are no better than Mac, only more educated. Thus you carry more blame for your actions. You know better. Shame on you!

      No more party politics period!

Let's hire KPMg to balance the budget and throw ALL politicans OUT.

I bet if there was a place on the voter's ballot to "Hire admin, accountants, and NO politicians, it would be a majority WIN"

People….we have to stop the foolish game playing of listening to politicians, they only want to stay in power and play their own games.

Wake up!  Demand better education and let the intelligence take it's course.  Do you think we would be where we are today if 80% of our children were getting college degrees?  Do you think we would be begging for civil service jobs or white collar success?  If we did not have these greedy politicians squandering our money, we could afford to send every child in Cayman to a top university.  Stop listening to politicians, period.

Politicians (both UDP and PPM) keep the people down to keep in power.

Demand better, throw ALL the bums out.

The majority of the posts on this subject do not speak for the sensible Caymanian voter. PPM did more for the Cayman Islands than had been done in the 20 years earlier + what has been done since.

The only credit UDP can take during their term is logged the most mileage and travel costs this country has ever seen.

The UK know that we are not all like UDP and will give us a chance to prove this in May 2013. The independent newcomers claim to be the highly-educated bunch. Education nor position gives one honesty and good character. They will just be smarter at their coruption.

I will die a PPM and I'm proud of it.

There is no need to endure autocratic rule until May 2013.  Voters can remove ministers, or parties at any time.  It could be done in a couple hours if there was sufficient interest.  Start the voter petition and direct the changes you want to see.  The double-dippers at the PPM and Ezzard know this, but seem to have a vested interest in keeping naive voters in the mindset that they are powerless.

Historically and currently, the only type of "actions" we seem to get from either the PPM or UDP is trying to oust each other out of office. The party system is a front for the wealthy that really control Cayman and so you will never hear real solutions to real problems. Tings for some people are good and the corrupted party system keeps it that way with a bunch of cult of personalities that fool everybody they are leaders and have solutions.

We need a grass-roots campaign and a fresh page, not a bunch of idiots who are on the same page of fooling us once again.

Those who were honest and those who were not.  Because they are outnumbered in the LA, you know full well that they could not win anything they proposed without the support of some of the UDP.  UDP we know all you have been doing is covering your backs and/or feathering your own nests and we will not forget in the next elections.  They should ALL be made to pay back the numerous law suits their incompetence has cost this country.

  16. Anonymous says:

Charles Clifford warned us about McKeeva and the UDP. He tried to march against the madness 2 1/2 years ago and what did the PPM do ? Pulled the rug from under the Chuckster. He resigned from the PPM as a result. Then later on Arden resigned as a result of frustration with the PPM leadership.

Now on the eve of the election the PPM has suddenly awaken. Well it is better late than never but I am not very confident that they will follow through with this. They do not have a very good track record.

If the Chuckster, Arden and Ezzard got behind this I would be a hell of a lot more confident and comfortable with it.

When I see these belated statements coming from the leadership of the PPM I tend to go WOW!  Because it never ceases to amaze me how long it has taken for them to see the handwriting on the wall. You blew it ALDEN!  You should have followed CHUCKIE'S lead when he wanted to march about the very "madness" you seem to have suddenly discovered.

This is the problem!  Instead of being proactive in demonstrating, as THE  CHUCKSTER wanted some 3 years ago!  You have waited until it has become critical before wanting to do anything, and as we all know neither the PPM nor the UDP are very good at CRISIS MANAGEMENT!

So I'm hoping that Ezzard, Arden and Charles along with the people of West Bay and George Town will organize a peaceful protest to demonstrate the displeasure and anger WE THE PEOPLE of this Island feel against  the outrageous utterances and decisions being made by one MR. BUSH!

In April 2012, when Alden McLoughlin and Ezzard Millar jointly issued a 'No Confidence Motion" against Premier Bush, it was rejected by Minister Mark Scotland on the basis that "Endorsing such a motion would be admitting not to have confidence in ourselves as government".

Well, what excuse would Mr. Scotland or any other UDP cabinet member have now if a THIRD No Confidence Motion is filed against The Premier?

Surely, as Caymanians, the UDP cabinet have to distance themsleves from the Premiers confrontational policy which has put this country on a bizarre and most serious collision course with the UK.

In the lightofo what has happened, I think that the majority of Caymanians and expats would agree that it is time for you elected representatives to stand up for what is right for this country and protect its economy; its people and its future and therefore you should take back control before someone from overseas is sent in to do the job for you.

We don't need confrontation but we do need good governance.

  31. I need a leader says:

PPM, thank you for the press release.

    Just a suggestion:

Why not organize the demonstration yourselves? I'm sure your party, like any other concerned citizen group in Cayman is aware of what is at risk if the Premier doesn’t change course.  As you so eloquently stated in your press release, “Premier McKeeva Bush’s behaviour could bring down direct rule to the Cayman Islands from the UK.”

So what, may I ask is the PPM waiting for?

Is the PPM not resourced enough to organize and lead a demonstration?

Is the PPM not a party of action?

Is the PPM really waiting for “concerned citizens” to lead the charge in this matter?

Is the PPM not comprised of leaders who have been elected to lead the charge on matters of island-wide importance?

If resolving this issue is so critical to the wellbeing of these islands why not do better than “call for action.”  Why not become the architects and orchestrators of the necessary action that will put a stop to the Premier's "foolishness."

I am a concerned citizen waiting for a time and place to march.

I am a concerned citizen who needs a leader.

Were you at any of the marches/demonstrations that the PPM organised? Were you there in the LA and walked out when their motion wasn't brought to the floor and walked out in protest? I was and very few other people turned up. People talk up big time but when the chips are down, they "had to work", "couldn't find a babysitter", couldn't come because blah, blah, blah. People initiated action always works better because some people don't want anyone to think they are politically motivated. Never mind who starts the ball rolling, if you love your country, turn up!

    • Anonymous says:

Memories seem to be short. The PPM has organised demionstrations in the past but did not get the level of public support needed to force the UDP to dump McKeeva. That is why they are calling on the public now. You see how Alden jumped on board with Ezzard and Arden on the East End dock and the one man one vote issues once it was so popular, where is he now. Not a leader I must say.

Get a job Alden, leave the running of Cayman and Mac to people like Ezzard and Arden.

    • Please read the press release says:

The PPM is organizing the protest, they are calling on everyone to join with them.

      • I need a leader says:

Perhaps the  press release should've stated the date and time of this so called demonstration and other courses of action the PPM are taking.

Pointing to precious demonstrations not  being well attended by the public only underscores the PPM's lack of rallying power and also their lack of popularity, which I'm afraid doesn't help your argument.  Caymanians and residents alike do come out and march when they are effectively rallied and they have confidence in the movement.

As a past PPM voter (and they'll probably still have my vote if there are no other "viable" options come May), I am still waiting to see some dogged opposition to what the current government is doing.

Our MLAs are elected and paid to lead and do whatever is necessary to safeguard theses islands.

    Alden,

As the Leader of the Opposition, Please go to the LA on Monday and do your JOB and LEAD!!! Ask the Government to tell the people of the Cayman Islands why they feel so strongly about the decision they have made to amend and add a clause to the FFR.

Stop asking people to take to the STREETS. You need to take your SEAT in the LA and REPRESENT!! Ask the right questions in order to get the right answers WE the people need and want to hear. Stop speculating and using the media to grand stand. That type of politics is not getting us the right answers. It is doing more harm than good.

We want to know about the CLAUSE the Premier wants to add to the FFR. From what i am hearing it has to do with holding the FCO and England financially accountable and ultimately responsible for any harm or wrong doing brought to these islandsas a result of their actions and the resulting fall outs such as the law suits and the settlements i.e Tempura, Kelt, Henderson, Kournihan etc.etc.

If that is the Clause he wants to add, then I for one am all for that amendment being added to the FFR. Lets add it, vote and pass the FFR into Law and get on with the business of moving this economy forward!!!

Please Alden, do right by your Party and the People. Go and ask the right questions so we can get the answers we all want to hear. If it is to hold the FCO financially accountable then you should support it all the way!!!

PPM – we called you to action in the face of what appeared to be overt corruption in 2005. Your government was honest but you swept the evil under the rug. Now look what has happened since you left it to fester and grow! Remember that as you call for action!

PPM please, please go back under your big rocks, you all are hoping to gain from all of this, poor poor opposition, thats what you all are,no solutions for our country only feeding off the UDP's failures,PPM will never get my vote.

I agree with the PPM. The people have spoken out and complained against the UDP & it's mismanagement, selling out, & constant suspicions of corruption for the last 3 years & it has continually fallen on deaf ears (or uncaring ears). This is a very serious situation that the premier & his cronies have thrown us into and words & complaining will no longer do, it is time for action. If it is the PPM or whoever that leads a rebellion I am all for action NOW, because the premier simply does not listen to anyone. If we need evidence of that this situation is ample proof, he does not listen to the FCO, he does not listen to his cronies the pathetic spineless wimps, & he sure as hell does not listen to the Cayman people. I join with the PPM & call for ACTION NOW!

Absolutely Correct.  I am so glad to see the PPM calling it like it is.  They, like all of the rest of us here in Cayman, are calling for the UDP MLAs to force Bush to step down.  In the face of these desperate and reckless acts it is up to them – Julianna, Ralston, Mark, Mike to act.  Their deafening silence shows their agreement with Bush's disregard for Fiscal Responsibility and future of our country.

It's time we take power back from them.  I'm ready to march.

    Finally.  Thank you PPM!

Thank you PPM however I think your demonstration would do better if it was against the whole UDP party and not intended as a show of support for your party.

We have been waiting for the PPM to condemn the madness, out the corruption, protect Caymanians, and require the rule of Law. Instead you left that to Arden and Ezzard and threw Chuckie under the bus. Your whinings now are frankly insulting and verging on pathetic. The PPM are mostly good people with integrity, but an inability to stand strongly enough for principle. The PPM stepped aside and let the freight train pass. Running after it now yelling stop is too liitle, too late.

  48. It is time says:

I stand behind the PPM and completely endirse this call to action, we have to show the tyrants who they answer to and who can take away their so called power. They are all up in East End at a UDP Retreat plotting their next move. Lets make sure when they come back to the Capital their seats are filled with new representatives.

Isn't direct rule what a lot of Caymanians have been asking for. The UK to come in save them..

    • Anonymous says:

Given the PPM’s failure to actively undo a single act of corruption last time, I think direct rule with an advisory body of Caymanian leading business people and civil servants is likely preferable.

      • Anonymous says:

Failure to undo corruption? The only way to undo corruption is to investigate and prosecute which is not in the remit of the elected govt.. Complaints were made to the authorities who did nothing but announce 3 months before the 2009 election an announcement that there was "insufficient" evidence to charge. How exactly is that the PPM's fault? When Chuckie blew the whistle on Mckeeva he ended up being the subject of a Commission of Inquiry which did not cover his original complaint but instead focussed on whether he should have removed certain minutes that he believed showed corruption.

Under no circumstances should any patriotic Caymanian want direct rule from the UK. Look at the damage that was done to TCI.

What Caymanians have been asking for is anything or anyone to replace UDP AND PPM. lets get rid of both of them in May.
