Cop charged with bribery
(CNS): After an operation carried out by RCIPS internal investigators, a 28-year-old serving police officer has been charged with corruptly obtaining cash. A police spokesperson said Saturday that the officer is expected to appear in court on Monday to face charges under the anti-corruption law. The officer was arrested on Wednesday, 14 November, in the Newlands area following a joint operation involving the RCIPS Professional Standards and Anti- Corruption Units. Police said that he was arrested on suspicion of soliciting a bribe and breach of trust under sections 10 and 13 of the Anti-Corruption Law 2008 respectively.
Police have not yet revealed the details of the crime and the circumstances under which the bribe was obtained but said the officer, who has been suspended from duty, has now been charged with 2 counts of corruptly obtaining cash, contrary to section 10 of the Anti-Corruption Law 2008 and 2 counts of breach of trust, contrary to section 13 of the Anti-Corruption Law 2008.
The officer was off duty at the time of his arrest and taken to George Town police station, where he was detained in custody while enquiries continued.
