Whatever the actual circumstances of this accident……they need to slow down. A loaded truck takes a very long time to come to a stop and due to the load, it's not like stopping a car, it will overturn and can cause substantial damage, injury or death. They should be restricted to driving at 30 mph anywhere they operate. Since they are paid by the load, if they are all restricted to 30 mph, it could be fair for all.
Andmoving the dump to BT will only increase the volume of heavy trucks through these roads.
As the public speculates how this accident happened, there are MANY road users who witness on a DAILY basis the AGGRESSIVE DRIVING of these trucks that take place. Perhaps we can take into consideration that the vast majority of these truck drivers are from at least one other island here in the caribbean and if we have any knowledge of this nationality, we would KNOW that there is a very AGGRESSIVE and HUSTLERS CULTURE of driving be it the Public Buses as we know so well and NOW the Trucking Industry.
There has been a NUMBER of times when traveling on the roads and having these truck drivers TAILGATING my vehicle (as well as others) and not surprisingly, when passing through the round-abouts these drivers continue to PUSH these trucks at pretty dangerous speeds while under FULL LOADS posing the risk of rolling the truck over and doing so ON TOP OF OTHER CARS/vehicles which may be traveling beside these trucks at the moment. (remember, not everyone has the common sense to back off when these trucks are going around the round-about). On these occassions I have taken it upon my self to COME TO A FULL STOP in front of these trucks forcing them to stop and getting out of my car to confront these careless fools in an attempt to EDUCATE them of the DANGERS of their AGGRESSIVE, HUSTLER and DANGEROUS CULTURE of Driving which many of them bring from their country to the shores of what USED TO BE the Cayman Islands, now known as the Jamaica Islands.
CNS: Please could you stop posting comments with odd words in capitals like this. It's really annoying to read.
Thank you for your carefully considered and measured comments 14:41 which as well as being racist are ignorant and inaccurate. There may well be Jamaican drivers of these trucks (why? aren't we complaining of Caymanians being unemployed? Or is it because it requires getting up early every morning and working six days a week instead of three. Or none)) but I can assure you many of them are our own! I know them!
This is appalling. The RCIPS traffic department works extremely hard and tirelessly to maintain order and law on Cayman's roadway. Those dedicated highly trained officers work round the clock to keep the roads safe and ensure that all the law breakers are caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law….
wait, what's that you say??
The CoP DISBANDED the Traffic Department? There wasn't enough work to justify a dedicated traffic enforcement divisoin? There are NO dedicated traffic officers who work round the clock to enforce the traffic law? What? The only traffic officers are those two guys on motorcycles who work 9-5 Monday thru Friday and who are solely dedicated to handing out speeding tickets to drivers in Georgetown?
Wow…I am sure glad the CoP knows more about policing than the rest of us..makes me glad to know he has our best interest when it comes to making Cayman, ALL of Cayman a safer place to live…
What's that you say, David??? Speak up…. The Silence is DEAFENING….
Rorschach – You obviously have not checked your facts. There are two motorcyclists and they are extremely dedicated. In fact, so much so that last Sunday they worked for six hours in the heat escorting the charity wheelchair push around the island and this Sunday will be up at 3 am to police the marathon to ensure the safety of the runners and the spectators for the marathon. Instead of attending most of the big events, they police them. Yes, they do carry out enforcement – and stop many people from seriously hurting themselves or others. However, that is not all they do. If you would like to do some good, then perhaps you could lobby for a return of the traffic department to support them in their role.
My apologies to Tim and Rob, if my comments made it seem like I was implying they were less than dedicated. I was attempting to illustrate the ridiculousness of the rules which they are forced to operate under. The CoP has hamstrung them by making them the only two persons who are solely dedicated to traffic enforcement, and let's face it, it's actually dangerous to be doing a lot of what they do on a motorcycle. Not to mention uncomfortable. The point of my rant was to point out that the CoP doesn't have a clue when it comes to operational policing. Your point is well taken. We should ALL lobby the CoP to reinstate the traffic department and put highly trained, dedicated officers back on the roads.
Well, well, well, isn't life a she dog infested with fles?!
It was only a couple of months ago that I sat down by my desk and sent a long email a RCIP Top Brass about this very same truck. Now look at where the truck is?!
While I don't know the particulars on how this "accident" occoured, I must admit that I can't help but to say out loud "surprised it didn't happen sooner".
Witness this mad max driving all the time, and even followed one of the drivers til they stopped. Tried pointing out the law, in a calm manner to him..but all I got was bumbothis and bumbo that and something clot that.
So, not expecting this to be the last we see a dump truck inthis position. I only hope that no one get's injured or killed in the process.
The first thing to do is to check if people involved were on the phone
Saw this exact truck doing at least 65 up the new bypass a few hours earlier. Couldn't get his plate number to report him. Speed was a factor…
You hit it on the nose, speeding! They start in Bodden Town, get up to at least 40 mph before Guard House Hill, then keep going and by the time they enter Savannah they're doing a cool 50-55 mph. I can't believe the Police Department doesn't think a Traffic Dept. is sustainable. Have they run an estimate on how much money they could make on handing out TRAFFIC tickets just to people who stop dead in front of you on a main street with no warning to let their friend out of the car, or, don't use their indicators to enter or leave a round-a-bout properly, speeding & creeping along at 20 mph from town when you can tell they've been drinking? Obviously not.
Also, the accident occurred close to a school, so I guess the driver planned to speed through a school zone just when students are being dropped home in buses and cars. Could have been. Much worse!
Savannah is a speed zone. The speed limit is a joke cause NOBODY ever follows it. I can't tell you how many people I have pass me going 50 plus when I enter Savannah from either direction. Yet, I have not ONCE seen police doing speed checks there. I guess it would be too much activity.
Why can't they install permanent speed traps in those areas where a picture is taken of the driver and license plate and the offenders can be fined accordingly? We are in the year 2012!
Only works if the is a legally visible licence plate and you can see the driver through the window tint, neither of these issues are properly addressed by RCIPS so why would you expect them to address speeding?
No doubt people wil blame the truck driver, since they have a reputation.
But I assume a car came from the direction of Georgetown and swirled onto the opposite lane at the busstop. A situation that frequently happens. The truck had to avoid the car etc etc.
Speed cameras are a solution, increasing the minimum age for boysto 25 to obtain a license and a mandatory driving school based on European standards.
Why European?
The USA is next door and they also have driving schools.
Because our road system is based on the UK system…roundabouts eg…none of those in the US?
ah yes but they don't know how to use a clutch, roundabouts, don't recognise the importance of crash helmets on motorbikes and think it is wise to let children, who they feel are too young to have sex operate vehicles…..
driven up I95 recently in Miami?????
Another one XXXXXX
If you thought about your response, you would have thought that that:
1:They drive on the right
2: they do not have round abouts in their traffic test.
3: We have taken if not all of our road code from the Uk etc..
Think before you answer…
Maybe you should take a trip to Europe yourself to see how many countries drive on the right.
Writer, you are the only person on here that came close to the truth of the matter yesterday. I wish that people would SHUT UP with their assumptions, if they were not there and did not see with their own eyes what happened!! A truck carrying that kind of load cannot stop on a dime! Don't be an idiot and pull in front of a dump truck! Or the consequences could be deadly! Thank God only the building and the truck suffered the worst of the damage. And stop assuming that it's only the dump truck driver's fault. Yes, I agree sometimes they drive fast, but they are not always to blame for stupid driving decisions made on the road!
are u crazy about 25. that will cause more accident cause aint no young wait 8 years after they grad from high school. you are beggin for trouble my friend
These trucks should only be on the roads after rush hour in the mornings and evenings. Why can’t they work at nights similarly to the port workers? At least it would be less traffic and less chance of them killing someone. Btw considering the damages these trucks are creating to the roads to build the new road in west bay, the developer and the truckers should be taxed to repair the damages and loss revenues to businesses that are lossed due road blockages.
Shock horror,,imagine that, another truck crashing. This does not surprise me in the least…Thank God nobody was killed.RCIP get a grip, how many times has this to happen before you get serious with these bad wannabe drivers.I urge you to station a patrol vehicle from your very close Bodden Town yard just a few hundred yards to your left, before the 25 mph sign into BT and count how many reckless idiots zoom down that stretch of road, amazing. They are crazy I tell you…
requires leaving their air conditioned office
So let’s imagine if the GT Dump is relocated to Bodden Town with 400 trucks up and down this road! Glad no one else was hurt!
It was only a matter of time.
The way those trucks are driven is incredibly dangerous.
I’m not surprised that this happened. These drivers are flying with these fully loaded trucks, it’s like a race to see who can dump their load at the new road extension and then head back toreload. One of these days it will not only be a building but some innocent people in a vehicle they kill. If this driver is at fault take his/her license away and strip him/her from being able to drive a rigg again obviously they are not experienced or qualified.
