Moses crowned PPM deputy

| 28/11/2012

dennie-warren-jr-event-photographer-20121128-4681.jpg(CNS): The PPM declared Moses Kirkconnell the party's new deputy leader and the first ever official deputy leader of the opposition. Alden McLaughlin, the opposition leader, said Wednesday that the crowning of Kirkconnell was an indication of the “Progressives” advanced state of readiness ahead of the 2013 General Election and its preparations for government. McLaughlin said the announcement was the first of many that would see the party lay out its election team and the leadership that would, if the PPM is successful, form the next government. With Kirkconnell now sworn in at the governor’s office in this key role, the opposition leader said he was increasingly confident of the Progressives ability to give the country the kind of government it needed. “I’m honoured and very privileged to have him take up this position,” McLaughlin stated, as he pointed to the post's creation under the 2009 constitution.

“I believe we complement each other very well and have worked together since 2005,” he added, explaining that while his new deputy had not run on the PPM ticket that year, he had formally joined the government the day after the election. McLaughlin said they knew each other’s strengths and understood one another well, along with what needed to be done to lead the PPM to victory at the next election and return a credible and transparent government to office.

McLaughlin said that Kirkconnell, who was returned as the first elected member for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman at the last election, was already well supported on the Sister Islands but his reputation extended to Grand Cayman as well, since most people knew who he was and what he stood for. Seen as the business specialist in the party, McLaughlin said that Kirkconnell had concerns about the growing social problems in the community as well.

Kirkconnell said he was looking forward to working with the leader and conscious of the confidence that had been placed in him by his party colleagues. He pointed to the need for unity in the face of the continuing global economic problems and said everyone had their part to play, be it in opposition or government, in working to make Cayman a better place. He said that as time moved towards the elections, the country would be more and more pleased with the people chosen by the PPM as candidates and the direction the Progressives wanted to take the country.

Asked about his position on business issues and the ForCayman Investment Alliance, he said the party could not take a policy position until it saw more details of the project proposals. However, he said, the country needed infrastructure and there was a need to strengthen tourism. When it came to the financial sector, he said Cayman had to be 'best in class' but there was a need for diversification and new economic drivers. A supporter of the Dr Devi Shetty hospital, Kirkconnell also spoke about e-commerce and increasing efficiency.

Speaking about other developments in the party, McLaughlin pointed to the importance of setting out the team ahead of the election so that voters knew exactly who would be in government if they voted for the PPM. He said that swearing Kirkconnell in as the deputy was part of that process. The next step would be the district selections of candidates, and then the party would have a general counsel meeting in February ahead of the official election campaign launch.

“People will know in advance of the election who the leaders are if we get elected,” he said, adding that it was important to move away from the chaos and horse-trading of the past that occurred the day after the election. The PPM was now, he said, ready for the campaign.

“Over the past 18 to 20 months since I was sworn in as leader of the Progressives, we have had a challenging time reinvigorating the party, but we have done a lot of work and are now at an advanced state of readiness as far as the election campaign is concerned,” McLaughlin added.

Although it had not been easy and despite the obvious challenges in the last few months, the party had emerged strengthened and in a much better place. The opposition leader said he was confident the PPM could return to government with enlightened polices and competent honest candidates.

He revealed that the PPM would field a full slate of candidates in the districts of West Bay, Bodden Town and George Town. The new deputy would remain the single PPM representative running in Cayman Brac, and as the opposition party still has a good working relationship with its former member, Arden McLean, and the independent candidate, Ezzard Miller, they would not field any PPM candidates against either men in East End or North Side.

The opposition leader said Osbourne Bodden had confirmed his interest in running in Bodden Town again and new faces, Wayne Panton and Al Suckoo would, with party approval, join him and PPM veteran Anthony Eden on the PPM ticket for what is likely to be a crucial district in the 2013 election.

Meanwhile, in George Town he and Kurt Tibbetts would be joined by former MLA Lucille Seymour, and a new political face, Kenneth Bryan, had also expressed his interest in running in the capital as a Progressive candidate. Woody DaCosta has confirmed his wish to join the Progressives in a bid to represent the people of West Bay and McLaughlin said further candidates for both that district and George Town would be announced over the coming weeks.

I agree that we need new blood but regardless of who leads Cayman for the next 4 years, if we do not get new investment or the planned projects do not go ahead, we will be in for a rough time.  Please do not scrap a project for political gain without looking at its merits and if you must scrap it, please have something else in place besides a blank look when asked.

There are heaps of socio-economic problems in Cayman and until they are addressed or Jesus comes, we are headed downhill.  We need greater incentives for small businesses who produce niche products or have annual revenues less than 50K especially when agriculturally based.  The whole renewable energy market needs to be flipped on its head. Its needs to stop being about who you know and be about about what you can do.  We need to address the petty crimes that plague our society, a young man gets a criminal record for what the US and UK considers a misdemeanor and has his future potential reduced to being a janitor.

Serious problems that every politician since before I was born only talk about in hushed corners because they dont want to upset the hierachy.  The UK and US have addressed them but we are left behind.  Address them and you will not only win the election, but will do good for Cayman. We need innovation and growth.

One last thing.  Moses needs to let out that jacket's sleeves, they are about a inch or two too short.

Agree.    A famous quote goes something like this:   "you want something done, give it to a busy person."   Mr.  Moses is a busy man, and he's also someone who gets things done.    We need a sound business sense (finally!) in the LA.

Integrity and work ethic goes a long way with me.    Not to put too much pressure on you Mose, but many of us have known for a long time that the reins of the country's cart would be best held in your capable hands.

Really now!  Is the PPM not opposed to moving the GT dump to Bodden Town, not opposed to giving away a portion of WB Road?  Come now, what further "details" do you need Messers Moses and Alden, to take a position on such critical national issues?  Quite frankly, if you're unable to take a clear position on this — the so-called "ForCayman Investment Alliance" deal — you're clearly unable to govern our country.  Is the PPM opposed to these senseless plans, yes or no; and will you commit to cancelling these plans if elected?  The people have a right to know!

“Advanced state of readiness” LOL real jokers. What has the ppm been doing since 2009? Alden helped to cause some of issues especially fincial but still not offering any solutions or trying to help the country get out of a mess they helped to create. Too little too late again

    • Anonymous says:

What has the PPM been doing since 2009? keeping the country from going under.  How can Alden offer any solutions or help the country get out of the mess when the leaders in the UDP do not listen?  Do yourself a favour and try suggesting to the UDP an alternative to anything besides big business, the selling of governent assets, big building investments and further growth of the financial industry in these islands and see what will happen.  Suggest controlled development, incentives for small business, eco tourism, preservation of the wetlands and lands for future generations of Caymanians, sustainable farming to supply our basic needs, solar energy, the need for a proper trade school on island.    Thanks heaven for the PPM and Arden because of them we don't have to spend what seemed like days in traffic going to and from the eastern district (remember?), the overcrowding at schools, thank you Alden for the Clifton Hunter High School and thank you Kurt for the wonderful new Government Administration Building (thanks to Chuckie that it was not sold to the "Dart" and rented to us so that the UDP could pay for junket trips).  Although expensive and of quality the country got more from the PPM administration that what we have gotten from the UDP so far.   Don't let me get started on political corruption and the literal giving away of the country to the highest bidder with very few benefits to middle or lower income Caymanians.

    • New Voter! says:

Considering I have been fortunate to recently receive my Caymanian Status, which I have been waiting for several years now. I have watched keenly from the shadows the political climate of these wonderful Cayman Islands because it will definitely affect my new permanent home.

So when I read such outlandish statements as the above post, it makes it clear why our Cayman Islands has arrived at this rather unfortunate place in its history; The islands’ Premier under three (3) Police Investigations, a Minister being caught drink driving and perjuring himself in the Court of Law with three separate and distinct stories, only to come clean and confess his guilt which wasted valuable Court time and the country’s limited resources, a Backbencher and his cohort(s) jumping an individual at a local Hotel of all places in a gangland style beat-down, and being brought before the Court for assault charges. These are just some of the gravely embarrassing acts that have transpired over the course of the UDP’s administration that all of us have to bear.

Yet, the PPM endeavoured to offer solutions to mitigate reputational damage only to be laughed at and VOTED down in Parliament. I have noted the PPM on many occasions, warning and bringing attention to issues that in any other country in the world would result in immediate rejection from Parliament of the current Government. They presented Order Papers that either have been rejected and or ignored by the UDP Government. So to make such shallow ignorant statements as to “what has the PPM been doing since 2009” is alarming. Had the Author took the time to read the comprehensive Miller/Shaw Report prior to posting, he/she would not have penned “Alden helped to cause some of issues especially fincial but still not offering any solutions or trying to help the country get out of a mess they helped to create” . they would have realized that the UDP government have wasted our valuable tax dollars and the financial issues started at least a decade before. The Cayman Islands have been taxed more over this UDP administration than ever before in its history resulting in record breaking revenue, only to squander it instead of paying off debt and curbing expenses. Yet no statement to that effect?!!!

It is sad to note that Post like this, appears to represent the majority of the voting public, after all as the old saying goes, the people elect the Government they want and deserve.  This voting bloc appears to operate primarily on hearsay and with very little credible knowledge. Maybe it's a small town /island thing, but if we are going to come out of this deepening pit we are now in, this type of reasoning must stop immediately.

Life is not fair, but once in awhile you have to give credit where credit is due. Based on that, my friends and I have decided that we are voting in our first Cayman Islands Election in 2013 for a government that is organized, credible and have reasonable and achievable goals and the PPM is the only choice.

The more things change in "Cayman" the more they remain the same.  I wish that things will change for the better in 2013 but I fear they will not as long as some people still have the opportunity to vote and other are denied like the many expats and resident population who will definately vote for meaninful change.  We want first world leaders and not the third world representation that we have been receiving.  Until all Caymanians (native or not) have the opportunity to hold office in these islands things will basically remain the same.  I do not understand why Caymanians are so afraid of change in the style of governance.  We change laws for development within our immigration and every other area where we think it will enhance our bottom line in dollars and cents, yet when it  comes to social changes and political development we are so backwards.  There are so many people who have live here for many years and are very good citizens and have the islands best interest at heart who would do an excellent job as members of the LA but we do not want then there because we are soafraid of social changes that would benefit all Caymanians not just the rich but the middle class and poor as well.

      • Anonymous says:

If there are "so many people who have live here for many years and are very good citizens and have the islands best interest at heart who would do an excellent job as members of the LA" then they should take the necessary steps to qualify as MLAs and run for office. End of story. It is a question of loyalties. If you cannot bear the thought of becoming naturalised as a BOTC – Cayman or giving up your other citizenships then you cannot be trusted to act in our best interest.

The bottom line is that Caymanians have seen the way that they are treated in the workplace by expats and know that they would be absolutely doomed if you gave them political power as well.

21.16 I remember at the last election hearing Moses give a speech over the radio, and it was the finest speech I've ever heard in Cayman, except for one given by Kurt Tibbets about  20 years ago, when he predicted with unerring accuracy, just about everything that is plagueing Cayman now.

An apt speech is one thing, but true leadership combined with effective  action is another. Though I don't know Moses well, he does seem to be one of the more convincing and uncorrupted potential leaders out there. Let's give him a whirl! I'd prefer to see him as leader of the PPI. Alden is a fine person I'm sure, but he has a reputation, rightly or wrongly, as being anti-foreigner, and that's not something we need to move Cayman forward.  He's also regarded  as the man that put a financial millstone around Cayman's neck with the new schools, something that Moses would not have condoned, I'm sure.

I would never vote for MOSES KIRKCONELL, ever!

His family have ruled the Brac for years and all we have is is a sky high cost of living. No Moses, you will never split the Red Sea for your followers.

You won't split my wallet either. I will never, ever spend a penny in anything that you are involved with. Electricity, Water, Insurance, Groceries, yadayada.

"Oh but I am going to bat for my people."

Yes, and I am the tooth fairy.

And let me guess, you voting for Juju because she is a "christian" that looking out for you right? Even if it is from afar, in a posh hotel attending conferences on how to lick stamps! While you talk about the "high cost of living".

Yeah, you deserve every bit of what you get when you continue to support people like her.

And if you don't support her or plan not to any longer, I humbly say "sorry" for my comments.

Kirkconnell Ltd has the best prices on the island so I don't know what you are talking about.  Oh that's right you are probably one of those that got the parking lot paved and for sure he won't be giving you any freebies.  He's a businessman and for sure can assist with turning government around.  That's what government needs successful businessmen not incompetent failed men like McKeeva who has failed at everything.

Maybe you were looking handouts. Sorry he believes in teaching a man to fish not giving them the fish.  He's the only one looking out for the future of our island: tourism and our children.

You uneducated idiot. All the things in the Brac go through Grand Cayman at an import tax of 22%. It then has to be shipped to the Brac on the barge. But you know what, you could be on to something….maybe businesses go into business to make a loss

    • Anonymous says:

Based on you statement I think there must a great opportunity for you to start businesses in Brac selling groceries and insurance at a better price. Maybe you could also buy out the power company and sell electricity cheaper, that would be great. P.S. Moses does not own Water Authority because if he did I think Brac would have piped water island wide.

      Foolio is that you again?

Er, Woody, you really think Alden agreeing to a smaller (like that's going to make a difference) closure of the West Bay Road increases your chances in West Bay? Ever heard about the petition? You poor fellow, you don't stand a cat in hell's chance. Time to wake Alden up to the real world instead of the fantasy world he's clearly still living in.

    • Anonymous says:

West Bay IS a fantasy world where they knowingly support dishonest candidates in hopes for a handout. Thank God Caymanians is other districts are not so foo foo. 4 more years of McKeeva would be the end of Cayman as anything other than a third world failure.

Sorry, Alden, Moses won't  provide you with the premiership. You're done, along with "politics as usual" UDP Bush. There's a new kid in town called C4C and it's the end of an era. Goodbye, Alden. Wonder who'll be taking over from you after 2013?

    • Stiffed-Necked Fool says:

Who? C$C? Not a chance Star! We don't need Rich Disgruntled Former UDP supporters in the house! UDP or C$C = same guy!

    • Anonymous says:

C4C hasn’t fielded a candidate yet and their old UDP arrogance is evident. Show us your candidates C4C and we will know your character. Until then try so keep your arrogance under control. If you REALLY care about Cayman, endorse the PPM and sit down to discuss the issues that we all need to tackle over the next 4 years.

    • Anonymous says:

C4C is a bunch of disgruntled wannabe King Makers who lost control of Mac and need a new horse. Alden is not for sale so they are looking elsewhere. If they really cared about Country first, they would be asking PPM how they can help and making sure any legitimate concerns are addressed in the PPM manifesto. Party Politcks is not the problem, CORRUPTION is the problem.

All you no-hopers, watch out for 2013 and a big change. Alden? Please!
