Christmas day power outage
(CNS) Updated with CUC statement: Christmas lunch was in question for many families on Wednesday when power outages across George Town and parts of Bodden Town disrupted preparations and the holidayfestivities. CUC officials said various areas were affected across the capital and out as far as Savannah and Newlands. The power firm confirmed that power was restored by 11am to all customers after the blackout began at around 9am on Christmas morning. Crews worked to restore power as quickly as possible, a CUC spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon, adding that the problem was due to a loss of some generation which caused outages to pockets of customers around the Island.
The firm said that a full investigation in the festive outage is now underway and CUC will issue more details on Friday.

Solar!
Planning should mandate every new home have it isntalled.
Thanks for the Christmas present! Very much appreciated. Could tell that you guys were totally prepared for the increased demand for power on Christmas Day. Not like you went home with your fingers crossed hoping it would all be ok!
It's Saturday……..what's that? No update….. No surprise….
You need to get a power audit – I think CUC will do one for no charge – my apartment is twice the size of yours & my bill is less than half.
The cause of your unnecessarily high bill could be one or a combination of:-
Insufficient insulation in roof & walls and leaky windows
Old, inefficient appliances and a/c system.
A/C system turned down too low.
Water heater turned up too high.
Get a power audit – you are spending too much on electricity and If you rent, maybe you should move to a more energy efficient apartment.
Ever noticed that our fuel charges are ALWAYS higher than the amount used
what do you expect when you generate electricity like a third world country…….
Thank you to the technicians that went out and fixed this on Christmas day.
Being paid double time. It's called being on call.
1250 sq ft house and a $894.87 bill this month and you can't keep the lights on, on Christmas Day of all the times to have a melt down … So sick of CUC's monopoly on power!
Lol, I bet you are the only person with a bill of exactly that, but that's a massive bill. I was in an apartment a couple of years ago and I used to use the ac every night. When I got my first $750 bill, I had a severe rethink. In 2013 I did not use ac and never paid more than $220. It is possible to live without ac and you get used to it. Change your diet and exercise more often and you will feel much better and not needing so much cooling. Also, stay hydrated.
How about a challenge to our so-called great architects of Cayman, start designing houses that have innovative natural cooling features, instead of these damned chicken coops that you all seem to come up with?
With respect 27/12/2013 – 10:23, chicken coops in the 345 arepretty cool places, well ventilated mi luv!
1100 sq ft apt, 2 adults, one child $570.00 this month.
I have 3000 sq. foot being air conditioned and my bill less than $500 every month. While I agree a smaller bill would be better, are you sure the problem is CUC? p.s. they no longer have a monopoly on the production of power.
1250 sq ft is not a house. It is a wardrobe.
WTF??? That's way to high for a place that size! Do you run the AC with the windows open?
mine is 12000sq ft and bill is $300 per month
Mine is infinitely large on the inside, but my bills are cheap thanks to the domestic nuclear reactor.
While I am not going to tell you that I have a 10,000 sq ft home with a $300 bill, I will say for that size house your bill is really high. Your problem is more than CUC. You need to get a professional to come in and check your house to see where you are going wrong.
every year the same thing .. christmas or new years (without fail) there will be a power outage just to prepare us for the rate increase..so we don't squeal as much ! merry christmas
This seems to be the norm from this company. There is no excuse for this type of power outage on a day when everyone is expected home running AC, cooking, etc….. Just lost my hot water heater and no hot water until Friday. This is really disgusting…..really wish there was another company.
Martinis don't need electricity.
We were having family breakfast when it happened. Fortunately, the cooking was done and we didn’t really suffer much inconvenience. Shit happens to everyone. Merry Christmas.
Second rate service from a second rate company, who's system is 20 years out of date, but they still manage to fleece the good people of Cayman for a fortune each month.
It's what happens when you have a monopoly situation. Ridiculous prices and terrible customer service.
