Rum, ganja and phone gear nabbed by prison guards

| 08/05/2014

(CNS): Four pounds of ganja and six bottles of rum along with a cell-phone and a USB charger were seized by officers at HMP Northward recently as the prison continues its ongoing battle against contraband. The loot was found inside the prison perimeter near the prison greenhouse, the supervisor of security & intelligence, Maxine Spalding, said. Despite the two parallel 15-foot security fences topped with razor wire that secure the prison compound, packages are still thrown over the barrier into the grounds. The Prison Service is in the process of upgrading the perimeter camera system, which, she said, would help to identify those guilty of these criminal acts.

Members of the public who are caught committing such offences are subject to criminal prosecution, and inmates who intercept these packages lose remission time from their sentences. But the smuggling of drugs and ganja in particular is a common problem for the prison.

Prison Director Neil Lavis commended his officers for their continued diligence, which he said was demonstrated by the increase in the number of drug and contraband discoveries in recent months.

they need to put catch net to stop these things and watch prisoners in the yard . Barbed wire could be installed about 10 feet above the ground to stop prisoners to get climbing initiaties

Display permiter camaras on government tv station or a web cam. It would allow the public to police thier own people.

Four pounds! This is ridiculous – how is it that the RCIPS don't seem to understand the fact that these prisoners have nothing but time to figure our new ways to cheat the system and get around any roadblocks that are instituted. The police and prison guards should be ashamed of themselves – this isn't some small little spliff that was some how smuggled in… how does one even conceal a four pound package of ganja?

The prison is so small and still they can't figure out ways to keep this stuff from not happening. Come on, likely reason is that someone on the staff is helping get contraband in (or at least ignored while it's already made its way onto the prison grounds), or else how are they getting away with it? Marijuana has a strong and distinctive odor even when it isn't being smoked so don't tell me they can't find huge parcels like this without "stumbling upon it" like they seemed to have with this one. Also, don't we have K9 units and drug dogs etc. on island – put them to bloody use!

    RCIPS is slack as wha

this is what we are up agains each day. relatives, friends. family hiding, throwing, and suplying inmates with contraband. its not that we are not doing our job. if you read the article we ARE actually doing our job very wel. this is what WE INTERCEPTED. not what the inmates GOT…

Are the prison guards afraid of the prisoners?  How do the people running this place allow such behavior?

    This is just unbelievable !!!!!!!!

Are they eating this stuff? How is it possible that guards are not smelling this stuff being smoked?

    Suggestions:

    – put cameras inside and outside of the prison. All areas and broad spectrum cameras which include night vision.

    – periodic search of the perimeter and interior of all parts of the prison.

    – redesign the prison underground with sunlight access from the ceiling. The ceiling can be composed of the same clear material used in aquariums  which allows for a clear view of ground level. Outside hours are in a large open field only which is above the prison. No grass underneath only the glass prison ceiling.  No trees outside on the complex. This allows for easier viewing and cleaning of whatever may be thrown over the fence.

    – an underground prison will make escaping a bit more tricky.

This is is a prison not a hotel or retirement home. The place should be uncomfortable not somewhere people aspire to live.

This is not rocket science. How about a chainlink fence 100ft further out? Then police the yard each time before the prisoners are let out. No one is going to watch the cameras. They never have.

The same arguments presented over and over again. If they caught 4lbs can you imagin the amount of drugs inside of that place. They probably only intercepted a third of the drugs. Same excuse over and over when will there be a serious strategy to halt the drugs, someone or persons are making big profit. It is a big business inside of the prison.Massive commerce. I believe we are only getting lp service. Time for action.
