Numbers men shot at

| 02/06/2014

(CNS): Two men were shot at in George Town on Sunday lunchtime in an attempted robbery that police say was related to illegal gambling. The two men, who were believed to havetakings from the local underground numbers game, were in the AL Thompson parking lot in the capital when they were approached by an individual who demand cash. The victims then drove off towards Welly's Cool Spot but the would-be robber fired shots at the vehicle. People at the scene said the armed man had arrived as a passenger on a dark coloured scooter with another man. Wearing a white cloth wrapped around his face, he demanded cash from the suspected numbers men.

The rider of the scooter was dressed in dark T-shirt and dark helmet and both he and the gunman drove off west towards Eastern Avenue and Shedden Road direction after the shooting, in which no one was injured.

Police are asking for anyone who was in the area off AL Thompson parking lot, Welly's Cool Spot or the junction of Shedden Road and Eastern Avenue locations at the time to contact George Town Police Station at 9494222 or Crime stoppers at 800-(TIPS).

Poor gullible people give some money to criminals and the criminals give them substantially less money back.

If cayman didn't have such draconian gun laws, the numbers guys could have had guns to protect themselves. Come on Cayman, it works in the US and it will work here.

    • Diogenes says:

Yeah, that would make sense.  Two lots of criminals having a shoot out in a public place – cause a criminal has to be able to defend himself and his illegal earning against other criminals, right?  Oh, and of course against the unarmed police as well.  And any passers by or potential witnesses!

I think you worry about the police too much. They know how to keep out of harm (and works) way.

You people from the u.s shouldnt talk about what needs to be done in cayman because you guys have leaders who are crashing planes into towers just to go into war for oil and sacrificing your own people based upon false flags..im not defending these criminals they need to be lock away from society but look back at your own country before you talk about a next country..

    • Bobo says:

Hold on! Are you seriously suggesting that prople breaking the law should be allowed to have guns, to shoot at anyone they feel threatened by. Oh, I now realise you are joking, or on crack.

No, I was trolling. Should have put a smiley face on it. As you can see, some folks missed the satire. They want their guns.

Were the 'victims' arrested on suspicion of ILLEGAL GAMBLING?

illegal numbers?? …..hmmm interesting because they sit outside by Wellys cool spot ALL DAY every day selling numbers. Not that it bothers me any,but the only time during my lifetime that anyone selling numbers has been busted is when a police officer, who is now retired, rolled the dice and didn't win. Maybe they should question retired police officers and others on the force that play numbers. Also If they want more information about numbers it would be good to ask all the little old church ladies ….they play numbers …..after  visiting a local church I have heard old people asking 'what number played today' …….it may be illegal but it certainly has a wide following. I am sure someone must know something as its always the same 9 guys by Wellys.

This country will not get any better when it come to gun crime , the government aint doing nothing about it , all they are doing is wasting our tax money with their foolish armed police ,
Until we the people has the rights to bear firearms , the gun crime will continue on , until it reach some of you high society household, yeah you who are the lawmakers, that’s when your going to agree with me , it will be too late thou ,
Common sense will tell you , if a criminal know that I have a gun , he gonna think twice to come and try to rob me , but if he know I don’t have a gun , he will not fear me , and he will strike fear in me , by force , which can result in my death or innocent people death, bystanders !
Wake up cayman , everyweek guns come into this island. Listen to me and listen carefully. I aint going to work hard for my money to make someone pull a gun on me and take it just like that , I aint no criminal , but if I have to be one in order so save my life I will

Proper conjugation should be a pre-condition of all gun licences and the right to vote.

Riders drove off west towards Eastern Avenue and Shedden Road.  But were the police able to say where they went from there.

The Commissoner of police need to get rid of the police .in the Eastern districts.  Especially those from that small Eastern Caribbean island..   They are spending too much time at each others home, or hiding out behind the desk being boss.  The Eastern districts is where all the ilegal motor runners are hanging out.   All day and late at nights they transport drugs and guns.  Does the police see and hear them.   You answer that question.

They should have asked the police from  the Eastern district if they saw them.

Well if the gun boys are going to attack anyone, it might as well be the other criminals.

That is why gambling should be legalized and run by government, so profits return to society and not some wealthy businessman.
