Driver robbed at knife point

| 19/07/2014

(CNS): A taxi driver reported to the police that he was robbed at knife point late last night. The RCIPS received a report at 11:45pm on Friday 18 July that the male victim, who received minor injuries during the incident, was dispatched to a service call at Deckers Restaurant and Bar on West Bay Road. When he got there, he drove to the rear of the building, where the two male suspects, who had their faces covered, got into the taxi and demanded cash. They were then driven to the roundabout near AL Thompson and were last seen on Sound Way George Town, police said. The suspects, who stole an undisclosed sum of cash, both had dark complexion, were slim built and wearing dark clothing.

Anyone who was in the area(s) at the relevant time and saw or heard anything suspicion is asked to contact George Town Police Station at 949-4222, the RCIPS tip line on 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).

Has anyone every seen any police patrol cars parked or driving along West Bay Road (our main tourism strip) during the day or at night? Has anyone seen the area being patroled by police on foot, bike or motorbike? I haven't – I never see any police anywhere. I see the cars parked in front of every police station but never on the road. I know this issue has been raised so many time, yet nothing changes. I am not saying that it is the police's fault that this crime happened, I am just saying that they are doing absolutely nothing to make the criminals feel uncertain of the police's whereabouts and that police patrol could be just around the corner. All criminals seem to be comfortable that they can get away with whatever they are doing cause no police will be around…….How much longer before this can be changed? We all need to do our part to discourage crime, but this also includes that the police must do their part………..

Whilst in LA Ceiba Honduras a year ago, my ex-mother in law warned me not to use any local taxi's. As it was aledged that the taxi drivers were robbing and murderign and dumping bodies alongside the roadside to unsuspecting travellers!!!!

She gave me the numer of a taxi they only use…….

If a local is afraid, then what you think about a foreigner-over there? It can happen both ways and this is maybe/maybe not the begining??

What we need to do is make the prison experience a real deterrent, export criminals to Cuban jails. Would a lot cheaper to keep them fed and watered.

As long as the punishment does not fit the crime, crime will continue unabated. Simple human psychology.

Memories of Estella, thatcar park needs some security.

The rear parking lot of Deckers appears to be an inviting place for criminals. Wasn't that where Estella Scott was abducted 4 years ago? One would think Deckers management would invest in some proper lighting. Just saying.

Typical that you think that thisis someone's fault other than the criminals, their families, and thier society, and YOU! That parking lot has been cleared of brush, is well maintained and as well lit as any on the strip. But thank you for reminding us about Estella. The game changer and the loss of real sense of safety in this country. Deckers did what they could. That parking lot is well maintained ( and really was she not abducted from the beach suites lot?) well lit and cleared of brush. They did their part to prevent crime. What have you done? What have any of us done?

Should be easy to find out you would think, CCTV cameras all over West Bay Road.

Why would the taxi pick up 2 men who had their faces covered? Ikes.

    • Anon says:

I don't think he "picked them up". Seems like the robbers made the call and waited in the rear parking lot for him and "got into the car". The driver's mistake was going to the rear of the building.  That parking lot is a perfect place for that plan.

I think the govt need another approach to deal with these criminals! Maybe a three strike system like LA!

Enforcing the immigration law would help.

      • Anonymous says:

Are you suggesting that whenever young Caymanians travel overseas immigration should refuse them entry on return.

      • Anonymous says:

More veiled racism avoiding the rampant local based crime.

      • Anonymous says:

And who said they were work permit holders to bring immigration into it?  did they show their passports on their way out?  Wake up Cayman's crime is done by at least 95% caymanians…..

        • Anonymous says:

And 50% of the 93% became Caymanian somehow slipping through a series of checks and balances intended to keep them out or remove them.

You would not tell that to Estrella's family, would you?
