Boat explodes in Newlands

| 11/11/2014

(CNS): Homes in North Sound Estates, Newlands were shaken Monday night after a boat moored in the canal exploded. Fire crews fought what became an intense blaze which appears to have completely destroyed the vessel, according to reports on Cayman27. Police have now confirmed that they are investigating the cause of what witnesses said were two explosions aboard the boat and the subsequent fire. The explosions, which were said to be significant were heard by residents in the area at around 10:30pm.

No one was hurt or on board the boat which is believed to belong to the brother of East End MLA Arden McLean.

Strange… I live nearby and did not hear a thing…

But then that was around the time I was having a good-long-noisy-ride-in-the-hay…

Can someone tell me why the responders & DOE didn't secure the area the night of the incident? When they wiated until the morning this only allowed the fuel/oil to spread into surrounding waters. COME ON CAYMAN, just negligence on emergency reponders and DOE.  Emergency responder can throw sand on the road or sweep up glass when the is a motor vehcile accident.. where did they think the fuel/oil from the boat would go?

It was so loud! All the car alarms on my street went off and the dogs in the neighbourhood were going nuts! Glad no one was hurt, but hopefully they can find the cause of the fire so as to prevent something like this from happening again.

Unfortunate what happened, but I was wondering if there has been any attempt to clean up the fuel that is covering the surface of the canal.

While they are at it, if they could take care of the derelict cars, commercial boats, and illegal structures that havebeen erected, in the area, it would be much appreciated.

Hopefully, he will have renewed his insurance and even taken out extra cover to safeguard against such freak incidents like this.
