Bush takes aim at C4C

| 01/03/2013

(CNS): The former premier has begun taking aim at all of his many political opponents in the battle for the Legislative Assembly in May. In addition to his long standing PPM adversaries on the opposition benches, this year Mckeeva Bush will be facing off against some of his former colleagues in the last UDP government, a wide collection of independents and also those running on the Coalition for Cayman (C4C) ticket — a group he described as “the coalition for cash” at his Bodden Town public meeting Tuesday night. During his latest appearance on the campaign trail Bush pulled no punches when it came to his political rivals in a district where the UDP will face a tough fight.

Alongside party faithful member Chris Saunders, who will be running with the UDP in Bodden Town, Bush also announced that Theresa Lewis-Pitcairn, who ran as an independent in the district in 2009, will be joining the UDP this time around. Bush has not yet revealed which two other candidates he will field in a district where the PPM has strong support.

Vincent Frederick, who was one of the leaders of the Coalition to Keep BT Dump Free, left that campaign recently as he said he was seeking to run with the UDP at this election but his name was not confirmed by the party leader. Only weeks ago Frederick had been harshly criticising Bush’s administration because of the proposal to relocate the landfill to the district. However, the would-be politician, who also ran as independent last time, is now seeking the strength of a party in an effort to make a better showing than in 2009, when he managedto poll only 4% of the vote, losing his deposit.

Aside from the opposition member Anthony Eden, former PPM MLA Osbourne Bodden, the two new Progressive candidates, Al Suckoo and Wayne Panton, along with the two incumbent former UDP candidates, Mark Scotland and Dwayne Seymour, only one other candidate has declared in Bodden Town so far. With only four weeks to go before Nomination Day, there are no candidates in the district that are seeking or have been endorsed by the Coalition for Cayman.

However, Bush still took aim at the group which continues to advocate that it is not a party. Bush tried to imply that what he termed the "coalition for cash" were really PPM — an irony that will not be loston many voters, given that several of the candidates and some founders of the group were previously associated with and supported Bush in the 2009 election and in the early days of his administration.

Nevertheless he said, “You know who they are, whatever banner they decide to disguise themselves with; PPM or coalition for cash. They are all … members of the same group.”

He also made a point of targeting Panton from the PPM when he spoke about people who had come running out of the woodwork. “They’ve made their money,” Bush said referring to the former Walker’ partner and long standing PPM member who is now turning his hand to politics.  “Yes, they’ve made their money, what in the world did they do for these Islands?” Bush asked.  “They can brag, coalition for cash or PPM or whoever they are, that they have the millions. And so, because they’ve made millions they know more than us on this platform. At least those of us on this platform have heart,” Bush claimed.

“Others have lived it up, made their money, now they want to come and run the country. They’ll put us where they had us … You should not give one of them a chance," he told the people of Bodden Town.

Piling on the criticisms of those running as independents, he highlighted the issue that all candidates standing alone will face during the campaign, which is the need for ten people to form a government. He warned voters that if they elect people "who say that they don’t know who they’re going to serve with, but they’re going to serve, they don’t know what kind of policies they’re going to put together when they get elected, but they’re going to get elected, we are going to fail,” he said.  “Those people who say that they don’t want parties, you know what they want. They want you back where you were in the 40’s, where you ironed the clothes, where you cut the grass … no, a thousand times no,” the UDP leader said.

Bush skirted the issue regarding the relocation of the country’s landfill to Bodden Town, which is going to be a critical campaign issue for any candidate in the district as it has fiercely divided the community.  The former premier spoke about the need for “jobs, jobs, jobs”. He pointed to people who say “you can’t cut down a piece of swamp, but yet they can dredge it up and build a $2 million house on it. They want you to starve, and your children. They don’t want you to have that standard of living,” Bush added, but he did not refer to the proposal directly.

For pity's sake, Mr.Bush needs to cease talking nonsense and accept that it's over for him.

Would somebody please explain to Mr.Bush that his political career is over and it is high time he went home enjoyed his retirement. I know I'd appreciate not hearing his voice ever again, and perhaps you, the reader, might also? Thank you.

The way I see things now is that NUDP and C4C is all one. C4C represents the NUDP Independents and the NUDP represents the Party goers. PPM are party and they will not lead you astray. They are the party of lawmakers and I have NEVER heard any of their names connected to corruption.  They are a party of doers, they represents Country. The others represents their leaders, their party and the rich. PPM are for WE….the people and US the Country. Go PPM!

Voting PPM is the only way to ensure this idiot is not Premier in May. Mac knows they are Coallition For Cash because last time they bankrolled his campaign and he repaid them with Board Positions and Fat Consultancy Deals

If the PPM is the ONLY solution we have I hope CAL is having a special on one way seats and cargo out of here.  There is a place at the table for all to be represented.  The division of the party poison is being spewed from those on both sides is disgusting.  Unifiy this island, unifyunder the words "Country First".  Personally I could care less about the lables of UDP, PPM, C$C.  We simply need to focus on one thing and that is what is best for the country as a whole.

I actually kind of look forward to the so called Honorable former Premier Mr W.M. Bush to get elected, as he will be relinquished to sit in the corner of the LA with his dunce cap on unless he wants to play nicely with the rest of those who I pray to God will get a chance to so as they say and put the needs of the "Country First"

If C4C stands for "coalition for cash" then UDP must stand for something like "Unabashed Dollar Profiteers".

    Mac is a hypocrite.

  6. Live Free.... says:

Here we go again, the Mac putting his shoes on someone else's feet, C4C and PPM are not working together, and for the matter of fact, C4C wanted PPM to step back or get out of the way. And from the beginning of the C4C they only attacked one Party, and that is no other than PPM. They have not yet stump on the UDP for the mismanagement of these Islands over 3.5 years of their Reign, and yet they are against Party Politics. When I stop and look carefully at it, I see C4C working together with NUDP, because most of the people on the C4C had some form of involvement with the UDP, it all started when the past Chairman of the UDP became the Chairman of C4C, and he had nothing to do with the PPM, so Mac needs to stop twisting up things to make him look innocent of being associated with the Party called C4C.

This is starting to feel like the 2009 Election, when all these individuals came out and proclaimed they are independent and are for the people. What the Caymanians didn't know then, that all along this was a trap set by UDP to split the votes to give them a better chance of getting in power. If Caymanians not convince that it was a trap, tell me why four of the then independents join the UDP this time around? Piercy, Theresa, Vincent and Wallie. Because UDP love to play this Card Game called, I Deceived you once, I would Deceive you twice. They are using a different strategy this time around, C$C comes to mind, with we are not a Party Slogan, and we are truly Independent with love for Country. If Caymanians fall for this trap, guess what? They deceived you all twice. There is not such a thing as Independent Candidates in this election just like in 2009, they are associated with a Party, and it's not PPM, I guess I don't have to say the name of that Party, just look back at 2009 at who won.

Caymanians, you all need to all forget about Independent and their empty promises, they have a plan, and that plan is to return UDP to Power at any cost. They don't care if they don't get elected, so long you split your votes, remember the Game, I Deceived you once, I Deceive you twice, all they are is Wolf's in Sheep Clothing.

    • Dred says:

I would tend to agree with you on that.

I think the record shows that C4C called for the resignation of Mac while the Alldone and his dog hung out around the poolside trying to decide what to do. I think this is all very cute how the PPM call C4C UDP. And now the UDP is calling C4C PPM. What it tells me is that both realise people want change and that is why both parties are scared.

      • Live Free.... says:

You Obviously don't understand how this works, first the C$C is trying to fool you in to believing that they are ( 1 ) not a party and ( 2 ) they are not associated with the Bush party. PPM on the other hand wanted Bush to step down from the beginning, when all these allogations against him came out. Where was C$C at the beginning, never heard of them before, until November last year when they lunched their meeting, about they are independent and they are against the Party system, yeah I know, against PPM, that's the only party I see them tear down. So I would advise you to stop puting PPM and C$C together in one sentence.

PPM call C4C UDP of course because the people on the C$C fund the UDP campaign in 2005 and also 2009, Birds of a feather flock together, get the picture.

And now the UDP is calling C4C PPM, now who would believe something like that, please read my other post and you would learn why the Mac is playing this song. By the way the Mac is only brushing us the people off  of his shoulders of being a part of his own C$C.

He has enjoyed having his home fixed up  and has had personal aides – at the tax payers expense…

Never before in the history of the Cayman Islands has so much tax increases been levied upon the poor people of this country in the midst of an economic recession…

Never before in the history of this country has the infrastructure received less benefit in a four year period than during this administration when the most taxes were extracted from the most depressed economy ever…

Never before in the history of this country has so much tax payers dollars been so recklessly dished out to political supporters at the whim and fancy of one man…

Never before has so many government benefits been given to such a wealthy few.

Never before has our government breached so many contracts and cost so  such  expense to tax payers.

Never before have educated people so blindly continued to follow a leader whose policies have wreaked havoc economy and on the lives of honest and hard working Caymanians.

So do we want to hear anything more from Mckeeva Bush?

One would hope that the Caymanian voters would have more fear of keeping people like McKeeva in power than voting for a change in which the country is heading under it`s present politicians. There are wiser, more honorable people with integrity that the population should vote for in the coming elections, than those presently elected. The present system of party politics with those politicians involved has not worked for Cayman. Time for something new, something different, something that can inspire hope for the future of all Caymanians.

The Independents see the reasoning in no-more party politics.  From a recent newspaper article:

Not only did the UDP lose a majority of members from its former government following Mr. Bush’s arrest and a subsequent no-confidence vote in the Legislative Assembly on 18 December, its former chairman and founding member, Billy Reid, resigned his position in the months prior to the government split.

In addition, the party has seen within the past week two key younger members declare themselves as candidates for election – just not on the UDP slate.

One of the members, businessman Stefan Baraud, declared his candidacy in the pages of the Caymanian Compass last week. Mr. Baraud, the former chairman of the George Town UDP branch, had a well-publicised feud with the party following a dispute over the George Town cruise port negotiations. The disagreement caused Mr. Baraud to resign as both chairman of the UDP in George Town and as chairman of the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands board of directors.
