Thieves target cars during school graduation
(CNS): Ten cars parked outside the Agape Church on Fairbanks Road in George Town were broken into on Tuesday evening as students from John Grey High School along with friends and family were attending the school’s graduation ceremony. Valuables and personal possessions were taken from the various vehicles between 8:00 and 10:00 pm and police are appealing for witnesses. They are also issuing a warning to the driving public to ensure that valuables are out of view and not a temptation to opportunistic criminals.
“It’s clear that the fact that so many vehicles were parked at the one location proved far too tempting to the thieves,” said Chief Inspector Frank Owens. “Despite our many previous warnings, car owners are still leaving valuables and property in view within their vehicles. If you leave items such as laptops, bags or stereos in sight you make your car a target.”
The senior officer warned parents that this may not be an isolated incident and implored them to take car.
“We are now in graduation season and I would urge motorists to be extra vigilant when they park their cars at the events.Lock your valuables away and if you see anyone acting suspiciously contact the police.”
Anyone who was in the area and saw anything suspicious is asked to contact Inspector Rudolph Gordon at George Town police station on 949-4222 or Crime Stoppers 800-8477 (TIPS).

EVERY GRADUATION THIS HAPPENS. THE POLICE KNOW THIS they know that it usually happen in the area of cuc building but they will not try and do anythiing about it . what a shame. if they had put four(4) officer therev to do observation who know what might happen or who might have been caught. no they prefered reactive police procedure
sounds like an inside job…..
@10:04. – Each employed person on the island is entitled to a lunch break, what if the officers wanted to take his/her lunch break to pick up something from a store? The RCIP are humans no Robots, unless a member of the public called the authorities and notify them that suspicious people are seen on the premisis, how will anyone prevent this from happening?
Who to blame???: If I am hosting an event that will have a large number of attendees I would hire a security company to keep the people in check and patrol the premises.
(Regardless of the religious background of the venue and/or Event)
Boy they must get a lot of breaks then. You can see cops in the stores all the time. My guess is they are hiding from what they are supposed to be doing.
The irony is we have far too many people who were rewarded for just showing up at school. Now it seems that some of them may be taking that idea one step further.
Just showing up at school is half of what you need to do to get an education. If you have a brain with you, then you get get the other half of what you need. U C any 1 not attending school learning a lot of what they need? Show up, you can not participate if you are not present.
I used to live at L'Ambience and people would always take stuff from cars or from your back patio. Usually it was things like loose change from the car and our small grill was stolen from the patio. XXX
Is this what my beloved Cayman Islands has come to? Cars being broken into while the owners are inside a church.
This is sick! We (not the police, not the politicians, not the Governor) must take our community back!
Cayman we need to stand up to this. I say it's time for the public to form a group like the "Gurdian Angels" or something similar.

ironic……
When are the RCIPS ever going to wake up? I was in Cost U Less the other day and two RCIPS officers (uniformed and armed) were wondering around shopping. This is the same night cars were being broken into by the Agape church.
The public and criminals know how innefffective the RCIPs is and this will not get better until we have Police that can be feared. There is little discipline in the RCIPS
This same thing happen at the same event at the same place at the 2009 graduation. Would think the police would be looking out for that…hmmm go figure
Agape Family Worship? This is a multimillion dollar organization that brings in a lot of money annually in tithes and offerings.
What kind of managment do these churches have if they are allowed to hold church services and do not provide security guards to patrol the premises while a meeting or church service is in session? In this case it was a graduation for the John Gray High School kids. It is a shame.
Government need to force these large churches to provide security guards to protect members going to and from their cars who attend church especially these large churches who are so cheap and do not think highly enough of their members to provide adequate security for their church followers. I can understand a small storefront not able to afford a security guard or services but a church of this magnitude? they should do better. I am shocked at the way people still think on this Island. robberies are carried out day and night and people still believe its ok to build a house with jalousie windows! Its time to install Burglar Bars on your houses Yes "grills" stop fooling yourselves you're now living in a jungle.
And Baines you got your tip where the stuff and the culprits live, XXXXX
This is what Cayman is coming to too many idle hands.
HMPH…they don't need "witnesses"…they need to go across the street to that damn "hurricane" Trailer Park and start knocking in some doors…believe you me, they would be SHOCKED at the amount of stolen and illegal goods they would find…
cus people live in trailer homes they are theif's??? U disgust me. Yi can't just be poor to live in one a dem awa?
Shame on our society! Those poor people did not deserve to have theihappenr vehicles damaged and their personal item destroyed or stolen. But why was so many police inside the building and not a single one observing the prowlers outside? This should never have been allowed to occur. What about proactive policing?
Perhaps because up to yesterday, this was not a problem?? Have you heard of this many cars being hit in one go before?
The police just arrested a 39 year old burglar for robbing several cars near the Lions Center. Are you aware of all the car burglaries on this island?
How many police officers did you see inside? I saw two and they both are attached to the school.
You saw two. So that means you are correct?
