| 23/07/2010

(CNS): A 27-year-old man is currently being treated in hospital following a fall from scaffolding in Eastern Avenue, George Town, earlier today (Friday 23 July) . Police said that shortly before 11.00 this morning the man, who was working on the fourth level of scaffolding at Cayman Distributors, Eastern Avenue,  fell approximately 20 feet to the ground. Emergency services attended the scene and he was conveyed to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he is currently being treated for leg and facial injuries. Police have not yet revealed the circumstances surrounding the man’s fall. This is the second incident in the last two months involving a scaffolding accident. (Photo by Dennie Warren Jr)

On 4 June two men narrowly escaped injury when scaffolding on a building at Anderson Square collapsed during a heavy gust of wind from an approaching squall. The men were able to climb to safety on a cherry picker, which was parked by the scaffolding.

Please tell me that the photo is not showing an unattached  step ladder resting on a scaffold plank.

I remember watching guys working on the West Wind Building, the Royal Watler Terminal and other high profile developments, some were wearing full safety gear and others didn’t even have a hard hat.

It’s all down to training and/or enforcement but I think anyone reading this website has a pretty good idea how that works in Cayman.

Is there no law or regulation stating that all workers should wear a safety harness when working from heights?  If not, I really think there ought to be.

      Why?

Yes there is other than third world countries.

Yes, should be, but that won’t help when the entire scaffolding tumbles down!

That would add costs to business owned by Caymanians when there are Jamaicans willing to risk themselves.  Cayman is full of very unsafe practices and contracts that exclude liability even for gross negligence (go on a boat tour and read the waiver).  It is a disgrace in the modern age.

"when there are Jamaicans willing to risk themselves"???? Do you even bother to get the facts before you spew venom ? or is because we are the easist set of persons to pick on huh?!

FYI this unfortunate accident happened to a Spanish speaking Native. Last time I checked Jamaicans were not Spanish speaking, and so  it would really be nice to offer sympathy to the injured instead of  pointing the fingers.

Says something about the business owners!!!!!

There is a regulations about working at height on building sites. All workers must wear harness. There is somewhere a mistake with this guy who fall. Wish him speedy recovery!
