Reggae singer Gregory Isaacs dead at 59

| 25/10/2010

(Voice Online): The world of reggae is in mourning following the death of Gregory Isaacs earlier today (Oct 25) after the star lost his battle with cancer. The Night Nurse singer passed away at his London home, aged 59, surrounded by family and friends. Isaacs, who was diagnosed with lung cancer a year ago, had been traveling around Jamaica before returning home to London this summer to spend time with his wife, Linda, and his family. His wife said: "Gregory was well-loved by everyone, his fans and his family, and he worked really hard to make sure he delivered the music they loved and enjoyed. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends." Isaac’s 1982 album Night Nurse, recorded at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studio, reached number 32 in the UK.

He was best known for his silky smooth vocal, ultimately coining the 59-year-old the title ‘Cool Ruler.’

THE REGGAE ARTIST TODAY SHOULD REALLY SIT AND LISTEN TO HIS MUSIC AND THEY WOULD KNOW WHAT REGGAE IS ALL ABOUT. THIS FOOLISHNESS THEY CALL REGGAE TODAY IS FAR FROM THE REAL DEAL. THE YOUNGER GENERATION NEEDS TO STOP FOLLOWING THESE WANABE’S REGGAE SINGERS TODAY BECAUSE ALL THEY IS DOING IS CORRUPTING THEIR MINDS AND PUTTING THEM IN TROUBLE. TODAY’S REGGAE IS A PILE OF CRAP AND IS THE CAUSE FOR A LOT OF VIOLENCE TAKING PLACE HERE ON THE ISLANDS AND ELSE WHERE. I SAY BAND IT FROM HERE, IF YOU WANT PROOF LOOK AT JAMAICA TODAY. FACTS IS FACTS.

      Correction

All of today’s reggae is not a pile of crap.  This is fact.  Take it from a veteran reggae patron who has bought reggae music for the last 30 years; who grew up on Gregory, Third World, Steel Pulse, Dennis Brown and all the foundation artists, and who still has no problem finding oustanding roots and culture music today.  The problem is the good music has been driven underground (so to speak) but there’s still plenty of it around you just have to know your artists, and look around a little harder to find it as you’ll rarely hear it played on the radio or TV these days.

What is a pile of crap is the kind of reggae that gets airplay from the media (DJ’s/Selectors/Entertainment channels on TV and the radio), promoting and glorifying violence, sex, gang wars and drugs and (just as we were influenced by music and rebellion when we were young).

We all know how music influenced and shaped our lives.  If this ‘crap’ is all our media feed to our children, is there any wonder why many are turning out to be ‘bad apples’ today?

There is a distinct difference between reggae and dancehall music. Herein lies your disdain for "reggae" music.

As for Sir Gregory Isaacs… only you alone coulda quench disya tirst. RIP
