Second tropical storm emerges north of Bahamas

| 18/07/2011

(CNS): The tropical depression which formed earlier on Sunday afternoon north of the northwest Bahamas became the Season’s second tropical storm at around 7pm local time. Bret was located about 100 miles NW of Great Abaco Island with maximum sustained winds of 40mph moving at only 2mph. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Centre in Miami said tropical storm winds extend some 35 miles out from the centre and the storm was drifting toward the south-southeast and little movement is expected overnight followed by a slow north-northeastward motion on Monday.

Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours as the storm heads east across the Atlantic hurricane experts said. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Grand Bahama Island and the Abaco Islands in the Northwest Bahamas.
